1 Corinthians 7:17 KJV 1900
17 But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.
There are three principles I want us to see from this passage.
A few things I want us to notice from this verse:

1. God has called everyone:

God has a purpose to work and he has a person to place - and in this instance we are talking about your part in that purpose
God has called all those who are Christians to serve in some capacity

2. God has gifted everyone

Those who have responded to that call God has distributed gifts to.
So often we are like Moses - we offer God our objections rather than our ability
Who am I? - so often our response to present situations are shaped by past experiences - Moses certainly had his share of experiences
An outsider in the Kings courts
An outsider in the children of Israel’s eyes

3. God wants us to utilize the gift

WHAT GOOD WOULD I BE?
As God has distributed to each one … so let him walk.
1 Corinthians 7:17
“Sometimes we can get caught up in wondering, What good would I be? and believing we have nothing to offer in service to God. As it turns out, we are all functioning parts of the whole body of Christ, and though we may not see the value of the gifts and abilities God has given us, He has a plan to use them in union with the talents of other believers to achieve a particular goal. In fact, He handpicked His workers and personally assigned their different abilities, knowing that’s where they would thrive and serve Him best.
Dear Christian, do not wish for another believer’s talents, for yours were given to you by your Creator, the One who knew your name even as He created the universe. Take joy in knowing that He has given you exactly what you’re supposed to have.”
David Jeremiah, Turning Points with God: 365 Daily Devotions (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale, 2014), 193–194.
You are the only person on earth who can use your ability.

“Success is doing our work one task at a time, one step at a time, one moment at a time, relishing the smallness of it while trusting God for its power to change the world through chain reactions of blessings we’ll recognize only in heaven. So we must practice the power of plodding and despise not the day of small things.” ― Robert J. Morgan, Mastering Life Before It's Too Late: 10 Biblical Strategies for a Lifetime of Purpose
1 Corinthians 12:1–11 KJV 1900
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Spiritual Gifts: Unity in Diversity 1 Cor 12:1-11
Spiritual Gifts:
Spiritual gifts are an important topic in the Bible there are no fewer than 155 verses where the Spiritual Gifts are mentioned, described, regulated, or portrayed.
Paul explains the importance of the Spiritual Gifts helps to bring about the goal of the body of Christ - the believers
Ephesians 4:13 KJV 1900
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
mature manhood - our aim is to build up the body of Christ in love it doesn’t happen automatically or magically -
it happens as each believer contribute their spiritual gifts to the body
Two main positions on the Spiritual Gifts:
Cessationist - a doctrine that spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues, prophecy and healing ceased with the Apostolic Age. The doctrine was developed in the reformation and is particularly associated with the Calvinists.
Continuationism a Christian theological belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual gifts, have continued to the present age. Continuationism as a distinct theological position arose in opposition to cessationism, and is often manifested in advocacy of the recovery of spiritual gifts in the Church today, but also encompasses any tradition that does not argue the gifts have necessarily ceased. (Primary promulgated by Pentecostal/Charismatics, but some Baptists, Wesleyan’s & Methodists)
I’m a practicing continuationsist - meaning I believe that God intended the Gifts of the Spirit to be used more than for just a few years. Now I believe the Gifts of the Spirit needs to be balanced and Biblically based - we’ll talk more about that later.
But Christianity is inescapably supernatural (Sam Storms - master lectures 1) - this power fills every believer
Defining Spiritual Gifts
In a general sense, all blesings that come from God may be called ‘gifts.’”
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Technically though - “A spiritual gift refers to a supernatural enabling of the Holy Spirit which equips a Christian for his work of service and ministry.”
Chapter 12 (1 Cor 12) thus insists on the need for diversity of gifts within the unity of the body. Chapter 13 (1 Cor 13) stresses that without love the gifts are worthless. Chapter 14 then focuses on two of the more controversial gifts—prophecy and tongues 1 Blomberg, C. (1994). 1 Corinthians (p. 242). Zondervan Publishing House.
Spiritual gifts are different than the gift of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
All Christians receive the gift of the Holy Spirit at salvation
But The Holy Spirit also imparts spiritual gifts to the Christian community.
Gifts of the Spirit are different from Fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23)
Spiritual fruit has to do with our relationships and spiritual quality - refers to what we are
Spiritual gifts have to do with our calling and function in ministry. refers to who we are
Gifts of the Spirit are different from talents and abilities
All people have some forms of natural aptitudes and abilities
Only Christians can receive spiritual gifts.
Natural talent is certainly a gift from God - but can function independently of the Holy Spirit
A Gift of the Holy Spirit cannot function apart from the Holy Spirit.
Gifts of the Spirit Passages
Three main passages:
Romans 12:6-8.
Romans 12:6–8 KJV 1900
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11,28 .
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 KJV 1900
1 Corinthians 12:28 KJV 1900
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Ephesians 4:11 .
Ephesians 4:11 KJV 1900
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Five Principles of the Gifts of the Spirit
1.God imparts spiritual gifts according to his divine grace: cannot be earned through human merit
2.God gives spiritual gifts according to his own discretion: he is not bound by man’s wishes
3.God wills that every Christian exercise spiritual gifts; these divine enablings are not limited to a few believers.
4.God provides gifts for the purpose of ministry and service; they are not given in order to draw attention to man or to satisfy his ego.
5.God intends that the ministry of the church be accomplished through spiritual gifts: human talents are not adequate for spiritual ministry. (Kenneth Cain Kinghorn, Gifts of the Spirit pp 22-30)
Three Categories of the Gifts of the Spirit
Enabling Gifts
Enabling Gifts (Eph 4:11-12 – Building up the Body of Christ)
Apostleship – meets the need of the church to transplant the Christian message to other lands and cultures.
Prophecy – given to inspired speakers and writers so that the Word of God may come in power to Christian believers
Evangelism – enables the Christian community to reach non-Christians with the Gospel
Shepherding – Makes possible the nurture and guidance of the people of God.
Teaching – provides the body of Christ with understanding so that all believers may grow into maturity.
Serving Gifts
The Word of Wisdom – Has to do with divine illumination that enables one to apply God’s truth to an immediate problem or need.
The Word of Knowledge – Has to do with an inspired insight about a fact, a situation, or a context.
Faith –A special ability to see the adequacy of God and to tap it for particular situations. (All Christian’s possess the grace of faith but not all possess the gift of faith)
Gifts of Healing – Enables one to function as an instrument of God’s healing grace in the lives of others. (This spiritual gift does not equip one to heal in every instance.)
God Heals in five ways
God heals instantly and directly
God heals gradually through the process of nature
God heals through medical science
God gives grace to suffer redemptively by healing our attitudes
God heals in the resurrection
Working of Miracles
Discernment - The ability to distinguish between spirits whether they are divine, human, or demonic.
Gifts of Tongues and Interpretation
Spiritual Body: Unity and Diversity 1 Cor. 12:12-31
Spiritual Gifts are to edify the Church (Church meaning the collective community of believers) - When people are dividing or pulling away they are not utilizing the gifts of the Spirit.
Spiritual Gifts are divided (diversity of gifts 1 Cor 12:4, 12) and given by the Holy Spirit
1 Cor 12:12- A comparison between how the human body functions and how the church should function as the body of Christ.
Paul doesn’t use the Greek word “church” here ekklēsia Strongs # GK 1711 and doesn’t until verse 28
The implication is that Paul isn’t talking about the entire church as the Body of Christ spread throughout the Greco-Roman world - but rather as a local church body as it gathers in a local community to worship.
so it is with Christ” is not talking about the headship of Christ - but rather that we are in Christ - it is an analogy that the members make up the one Body - and a body is made up of many various and diverse parts.
The diversity comes in from the fact that we can’t impose uniformity “There is unity in plurality, but not uniformity. Individual integrity remains.”
water is an emergent from H2O. Water is something more than H2O. It is water, and if it is reduced to its chemical components it ceases to be water. The spiritual body, the body of Christ—the Church—is like that. It is only the Church when all the members are harmoniously related and functioning in unison. This is made possible by the living soul of the Church—the Holy Spirit.
The Church is made a spiritual body through the baptism in the Spirit. Carter, C. W. (1966). The First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians. In Romans-Philemon (Vol. 5, p. 202). William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company.

Spiritual Gifts: Prophecy and tongues
Pursue love & desire spiritual gifts
Prophesy
Speaks to men
edification, exhortation and comfort
edifies the church
The greater of the two gifts (unless you interpret)
Profits by revelation, knowledge, prophesying, doctrine
Tongues
Only speaks to God for no man understands
edifies himself
Does not profit
Illustration of music vs noise
pipe or harp or any musical instrument has to follow a particular pattern or set of tones in order to know the melody or song that it is playing - otherwise it is just sound or noise
1 Cor 14:14 - all kinds of voices/ languages in the world and none of them is without signification or lack meaning.
If I don’t know the language however it doesn’t do me any good. I am like a foreigner
being zealous or desiring a spiritual gift comes with the responsibility to build up the church.
Praying or singing in tongues doesn’t do any good to the hearers -
Although Paul says we are not to misunderstand - tongues is a valuable gift. He wishes they could all speak in tongues but he would rather they would all prophesy.
Paul makes the proposition that to pray with tongues is to pray without the utilization of the mind.
Whatever this tongues is - it only employs the spirit not the mind if i interpret this correctly.
Paul gives his conclusion to the matter in 1 Cor 14:15
NKJV - What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
what does it mean to pray or sing with the spirit?
Conjunction of mind and spirit brings full benefit.
I saw a person leading son service one time and they stopped mid song to yawn - that made me feel like putting my all into singing.
14:34–35 Paul has already mentioned two contexts in which certain people should remain silent in the church: those who would speak in tongues when there is no interpreter (v. 28) and those who would go on prophesying were it not that someone else had signaled that they were ready to speak (v. 30). Now he adds a third situation where certain people should remain silent. Women196 should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.1 Ciampa, R. E., & Rosner, B. S. (2010). The First Letter to the Corinthians (p. 718). William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company.
Paul has already stated in 1 Cor 11:5 that women could pray and prophecy in church - so this passage has provided quite a bit of controversy.
As best as I can understand - there were disruptive women who were asking questions in worship that disrupted the order and peace of the service.
Paul says there is a time and place to ask those kinds of questions - and that is not in church.
this cannot be a complete prohibition of women speaking and praying in church as it would completely contradict other passages of scripture.
