Opening Chapter of Genesis is about the creation of the world.
Genesis show us is how God is different from all the other Gods of the ancient world.
Everyone had a creation or origins story and what God is establishing is how different he was and is.
In all other creation stories the gods are immoral, selfish and vengeful…
Their horrible deeds caused the world and ppl to be created by accident.
First difference we see is that the world and people were the afterthoughts of gods
While God created the world and mankind very intentional.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Pagan religions: different gods were over different things, ie sea, sky, land, ect
Bible: God is the maker of it all!
Pagan religions: humanity is the result of the actions of gods often at war with each other
Bible: God creates humans intentionally
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Pagan religions: women are less then men, often a temptress that tempted both gods and men
Bible: God creates both man and woman in his image.
At the end of each creative day God reviewed his handiwork and said “It is good!”.
The only time God said it is not good was in vs 18 - What was not good? That man was ALONE!
Pagan gods: want nothing to do with people
Bible: God creates man and gives them purpose and then visits them daily.
What is man’s purpose?
Multiply and fill the earth.
They would take God’s image and cover the whole earth with it.
Pagan god’s: chaos, trouble, fighting
Bible: After he is done creating, rests!
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
The opening chapters of the Bible paint a picture of a God unlike anything the world had ever seen!
The NT would even take this farther…
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Everything was created by the Word of God…
That word became flesh, Jesus!
So the God who made humans in his own image, would come in the image of humans!
This is the greatest difference in all other religions, old and new.
Conclusion:
In every other religeon, we are separated from the gods, god or spiritual realm with no hope of saving or at best a long list of impossible things that must be done.
BUT our God is different!
He makes us in His image and then to redeem us, makes himself in our image!
Literally fulfilling the purpose that he gave Adam and Eve…
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Now are are to be spiritually what Adam and Eve was to be physically!
Now we spiritually are to be fruitful and multiply!
When we are reconciled, we can experience the rest he experienced in Genesis!
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
