Pericopy: John 16:7-14 English Standard Version
7 “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, 8 he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
Text: John:16:8-11 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Introduction:
Jesus is instructing his disciples what to expect difficulties in the coming days. He was telling them that not to be afraid for what comes to them, because the Jews persecute them out of ignorance. He said that they will be put out of the synagogues for associating with Jesus. According to John, Jesus is about to be arrested, but he is telling his people not to worry because this is what is expected to happy according to scripture. Jesus said that he has to be taken away for the Advocate to come. Jesus purpose is done on Earth. The people have to let the enemy take Him away, so that he can send the Holy Spirit to complete his work.
Problem:
This country does not persecuted Christians or any religious group because we live in a Christian society that respects people’s faith. We do not worry about dying for our faith; however, we are ostracize because of our personal political, sexual, or racial opinions. The Conservatives upholds the status quote, which is narrow minded and leaves little room for compromise, but the Liberals are open minded to a broader perspective to life.
We must recognize when there is divine activity at works, and we need to step down from our lofty high place and allow the Holy Spirit to work within us. John’s gospel is a very good message of what we must do to allow the Holy Spirit freedom to work its miracle.
Resolution:
What John is telling us to do is let us look at “Ways the Holy Spirit motivates Our Lives.”
Response 1:
First, the Holy Spirit acts as a helper in a difficult situation. When we walk into a bad circumstance, the Holy Spirit will help us to get out of the way. Once we accidently fall into a trap, the Holy Spirit will direct us out of danger. Once we stumble through the day, the Holy Spirit feeds us information that allows us to take advantage of promotional blessings. We have to walk through the door when the opportunity comes, and the Holy Spirit knows when the best time to go through the door.
Isaiah 11:1-4 (English Standard Version) “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.”
Response 2:
Second, the Holy Spirit warns us of the sinful nature of our environment. When the atmosphere becomes toxic and danger to bear in our work situation, the Holy Spirit will protect us from erroneous challenges that we must combat. Once our workplace becomes tainted with corruption and scandalized behavior, the Holy Spirit will judge and correct the activity of the office.
Acts 5:3-4 (English Standard Version) “But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.””
Response 3:
Third, the Holy Spirit guilds us into a righteous path. When we are unsure of what to do or say, we can depend on the Holy Spirit to give what to say. Once we are estranged from the usual circumstances, we can give credence to the Holy Spirit to help us to smooth over an embarrassing situation. As much as we love to go on adventures, the Holy Spirit give us insight to spots what we should avoid. The Holy Spirit gives us warning signs about places and people we need to avoid.
2 Corinthians 3:16-18 (English Standard Version) “But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
Conclusion:
In the final analyses, the Holy Spirit directs our pathway into truth and justice. The Holy Spirit is a breath of fresh air, once we get on board to utilize it directional force. The Master is about telling the true. When someone sacrifices their live so that we may live, it is easy to take advice from them.
