Psalms of Asaph
Psalms of Asaph
Who was Asaph? In book 3, 11 of the Psalms are attributed to him. This is one of these names we are not all familiar with. His identity can be uncovered though as we look at 1 & 2 Chronicles.
Asaph was the chief, and second to him were Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, who were to play harps and lyres; Asaph was to sound the cymbals,
Three things we learn about Asaph. One he was a Levite. Two was one of the chief musicians. Thirdly we learn he played the cymbals. this was done as they brought the ark into the tent.
and all the Levitical singers, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, their sons and kinsmen, arrayed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, stood east of the altar with 120 priests who were trumpeters;
This passage Asaph is their leading and playing as the ark comes into the temple. As we can see Asaph had a heart of praise. he celebrated and recognized the presence of God in his life and used his talents to glorify God
A Psalm of Asaph.
God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.”
Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for you shall inherit all the nations!
Psalms of the Sons of Korah
Psalms of the Sons of Korah
Who are the sons of Korah? They wrote 4 of the Psalms in book 3.
They were a guild of temple singers, but not Levites.
Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites;
Could possibly be gentiles
Shallum the son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his kinsmen of his fathers’ house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tent, as their fathers had been in charge of the camp of the Lord, keepers of the entrance.
They had responsibilities of doing maintenance and guarding the entrance.
The Psalms they write are called the Elohisitc Psalter. These Psalms use Elohim rather than Yahweh more often.
A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song.
On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
the Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
Glorious things of you are spoken,
O city of God. Selah
Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;
behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush—
“This one was born there,” they say.
And of Zion it shall be said,
“This one and that one were born in her”;
for the Most High himself will establish her.
The Lord records as he registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
Singers and dancers alike say,
“All my springs are in you.”
Psalm Written by Ethan
Psalm Written by Ethan
Who was Ethan? We do not know a whole lot about him. We know he was very wise.
For he was wiser than all other men, wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol, and his fame was in all the surrounding nations.
We also can gather from Bible evidence he was a Levite. He wrote this one Psalm (Psalm 89, we will only look t the first 4 of the 52 verses). Realize you do not have to be someone of great fame to be used by God to do great things.
I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever;
in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.”
You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
I have sworn to David my servant:
‘I will establish your offspring forever,
and build your throne for all generations.’ ” Selah
