What does the Bible mean?

I. Heart

Used 1000+ times in Scripture
In general it is a term used for the center
Psalm 46:2 ESV
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
Some times as the center of our being or our physical heart
But primarily (900+)as an internal center: One’s inner self; inclination, disposition, determination, courage, will, intention, attention, consideration and reason.
locus of a person’s thoughts, volition, emotions and knowledge of right and wrong(conscience).
We think of that, in light of science, as the brain.
Genesis 6:5 ESV
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Proverbs 3:5 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Matthew 5:8 ESV
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

II. With all

Psalm 138:1 ESV
I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;
Jeremiah 29:13 ESV
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Mark 12:30 ESV
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
This is the sense of not holding anything back
Me: sports vs music - voice teacher’s comment
Marriage: dating vs married (?)
We tend to want or think we can hold things back from God.
1 Chronicles 28:9 ESV
“And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.
So while God already knows our hearts, he does not force our allegiance
But he does allow or bring things into our lives to test and purify us
Deuteronomy 13:3 ESV
you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
1 Peter 1:6–9 ESV
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
God is most concerned about our hearts/faith and not so much about our comfort and ease
We might hear phrases like, “the heart wants, what the heart wants” or “I just want you to do what makes you happy”
These are self destructive lies that lead to death, our hearts were meant for God
Our hearts were meant to find our happiness in experiencing God’s love and loving him
*Beattitudes
Anything else, anything held back is Idolatry

III. Your (How do we live this out?)

Understand and believe God’s love for you/us
1 John 3:1–3 ESV
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Romans 8 - The Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are children of God
But if we have unconfessed sin...
Confess unbelief and sin
1 John 1:5–10 ESV
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
ie a divided heart
Renew our minds
Romans 12:2 NIV
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Guard our Hearts
Proverbs 4:23 NASB95
Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
take every thought captive
We need to learn to evaluate all that we think, hear and see in light of God and His word.
We need margin to do this.
