State:
Jesus was preparing the disciples after he died to do the great commission-
Go and preach to the whole world and create disciples
Acts 1:3 (NLT)
3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
State:
He would have been telling them what he wanted them to do and be for him and about the proclaiming of the Kingdom of God.
State:
God would send them the power to do this great commission
Acts 1:5 NLT
5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
State:
Pentecost in 33 AD was when this power for the believers to become the church happened....it looked like this.
Acts 2:1–22 (NLT)
1 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
State:
This is not the receiving of the Holy Spirit. We all get this at Salvation.
Peter tells us so in his speech he is about to give....
Acts 2:38–39 (NLT)
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”
State:
Can you be filled with the Holy Spirit and not speak in tongues?
YES!
This is what is told to Elizabeth about her son John The Baptist
Luke 1:15 NLT
15 for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord. He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth.
This is what happened when Mary (mother of Christ) meets Elizabeth( mother of John the Baptist)
Luke 1:41–43 NLT
41 At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed. 43 Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?
(This was done in her native language)
This is what happened to Zechariah the father of John the Baptist
Luke 1:67 NLT
67 Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:
State:
In all cases the filling of the Holy Spirit gave them boldness/power to speak: THEIR LANGUAGE
John The Baptist became a preacher of repentance
Elizabeth gave praise
Zachariah prophesied about Jesus/Messiah
State:
Spirit lead Speaking was the emphasis/result at Pentecost also.
Pentecost was a preview of what the church would do....
Speak to all nations and tongues
5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!
9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”
State:
This explains the purpose of this filling of the Holy Spirit
State:
Now we see the first example of the empowering of the Holy Spirit to speak.
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, (previously hidding away)
“Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
State:
Pentecost was the ushering in of what we officially would call The End Times or The Last days......
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servantsmen and women alike— and they will prophesy.
State:
God does not limit his callings to men only or to the priestly class
Jesus was the first feminist....
Meaning of feminist: If you believe that women should have the same political, social, and economic rights as men, you are a feminist
State:
The next part of the prophecy has not yet happened.
19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke. 20 The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. 21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
State:
The Holy Spirit can fill us more than once
Peter’s prayer with the brothers after being beaten for preaching about Jesus.
Acts 4:29–31 (NLT)
29 And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. 30 Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
