Adoration: God’s Eternity (Eternality)

Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Eternity)
God is eternal in that he does not exist within time but rather exists before and outside of time.
Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Eternity)
While creatures change, improve, and decline within time, God is all that he is in a single, unchanging moment.
Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Eternity)
He did not have a beginning in time, nor will he have an end
Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Eternity)
Being perfect, he does not need to grow, develop, or increase, nor is he subject to decline, decay, or death
Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Eternity)
While time has passed, God is the same. To God, time is like a great canvas spread before him, every moment of which he can take in simultaneously.
Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Eternity)
To him, all times are present. A thousand years in our experience are as nothing in God’s eyes (Ps 90:4).
Primeval Understanding:
Genesis 21:33 (ESV)
33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.
Everlasting = “El Olam”
Self-Testimony:
Deuteronomy 32:39–41 (ESV)
39 “ ‘See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.
40 For I lift up my hand to heaven and swear, As I live forever,
41 if I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and will repay those who hate me.
Psalm 90:1–5 (ESV)
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3 You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!”
4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.
5 You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream...
Isaiah 40:28 (ESV)
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
Psalm 102:12 (ESV)
12 But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations.
Isaiah 43:10 (ESV)
10 ...Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.
Isaiah 57:15 (ESV)
15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
The New Testament:
2 Peter 3:8 (ESV)
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
1 Timothy 6:12–16 (ESV)
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and...
16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
“immortality” = non-death “a-thnasko
Romans 16:25–27 (ESV)
25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages
26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith—
27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.
Jesus?
Revelation 1:8 (ESV)
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation 21:6 (ESV)
6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Jesus!
John 8:56–59 (ESV)
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”
57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
59 So they picked up stones to throw at him...
Revelation 22:12–14 (ESV)
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.
1 Timothy 1:17 (ESV)
17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
“immortal” = “imperishable,” or “incorruptible”

Prayer of Adoration

Supplication

Isaiah 40:28–31 (ESV)
28 ...The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
