Intro: Chronologically, our Bible begins with creation, but shortly following the creation account there is a struggle. That struggle is over a throne.
Isaiah 14:12–14 KJV 1900
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Chronologically, our Bible ends with someone sitting upon the throne. Jesus, of course is King and that is an eternal name, so what about His first coming.
Herod recognized Him as being born King of the Jews. (Mt. 2:4-8)
Do we realize that during His first coming, not one time did He ever sit on a throne. In fact, He was born in a manger, because there no room for Him...
Revelation is the place where God peels back the layers and gives us a deeper look. We see Christ in all of His glory as King of all kings!
In Revelation the word throne is used 40 times, the work king or kingdom 25 times, and the words rule, power, or authority are used 37 times.
In case we missed it in the first 65 book of the Bible God is making something very clear to us here in this book and for our study today Revelation 1:7.
Although He was perfectly sinless in His first coming, although He fulfilled every Old Testament prophecy concerning who He was. They brought Him out and they beat Him, they whipped Him, they bruised Him.
The first time: Read Matt. 27:27-31
The next time:
Revelation 19:12–15 KJV 1900
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Just in-case we missed it… Jesus Christ is the Sovereign God of all the universe!
With Clouds...
Revelation 1:7 KJV 1900
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
We would all understand if the Bible said, “Behold, he cometh; and every eye shall see him.
But, what about the clouds?
We would agree that God doesn’t waste space in His word. That there is a reason that this is here but how do we determine what this is talking about?
We compare spiritual with spiritual!
Matthew 24 Jesus leads His disciples to the Mount of Olives. The very place that Zechariah 14:4 tells us is the first place that He will set foot at His second coming. He sits down there on the Mount of Olives with His disciples and they ask Him.
Matthew 24:3 KJV 1900
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
Jesus’ response in throughout but I want us to hone in on one verse. Verse 30.
Matthew 24:30 KJV 1900
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Matthew 26 Jesus is brought before Caiaphas and He is asked by Caiaphas if He is the Christ the Son of God. His response is in verse 64
Matthew 26:64 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
When the New Testament talks about the second coming of the Lord, it talks about it with clouds. But not only does the NT talk about it that way, the Old Testament does as well.
The Psalmist sing about it!
Psalm 104:3 KJV 1900
Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: Who maketh the clouds his chariot: Who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
Psalm 97:2 KJV 1900
Clouds and darkness are round about him: Righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
The prophets write about it!
Isaiah 19:1 KJV 1900
The burden of Egypt. Behold, the Lord rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: And the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, And the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.
Jeremiah 4:13 KJV 1900
Behold, he shall come up as clouds, And his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: His horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
Ezekiel is preaching about the second coming of Christ,
Ezekiel 1:4 KJV 1900
And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.
Daniel 7:13 KJV 1900
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
Joel 2:2 KJV 1900
A day of darkness and of gloominess, A day of clouds and of thick darkness, As the morning spread upon the mountains: A great people and a strong; There hath not been ever the like, Neither shall be any more after it, Even to the years of many generations.
The Reason for Christ Coming “With Clouds” (The clouds are the clothing of Christ’s Glory)
Ezekiel 10:4 KJV 1900
Then the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub, and stood over the threshold of the house; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the Lord’s glory.
2 Chronicles 5:13–14 KJV 1900
It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord; So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.
Exodus 40:35 KJV 1900
And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
When God reveals His Glory, He wraps Himself in the splendor and majesty of clouds. Once we see this all the way through the Bible it makes perfect sense why the Holy Spirit would inspire Revelation 1:7 because the Glory is what the second coming is all about.
Isaiah 53:3 KJV 1900
He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not.
This is the Lord of Glory...
Matthew 16:27 KJV 1900
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Matthew 19:28 KJV 1900
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Matthew 24:30 KJV 1900
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Matthew 25:31 KJV 1900
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
The first thing God want’s us to understand about His second coming is that it will be glorious!
2nd thing It will surpass all geographic limitations.
His first coming - His birth, maybe ten people that is just 20 eyes...
For those years that He grew, only a few...
His earthly ministry - The Holy Spirit came down from heaven visibly, God spoke audibly, confirming Who He was. He spent 3+ years fulfilling all 360 prophecies that the Old Testament said would be the signs of the Christ. Do you know how many people through all of that really saw who He really was.
John 7:46 KJV 1900
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
Even after all He did, and after all that had been done. Do you know how many people gathered in the upper room.
Acts 1:15 KJV 1900
And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
How few there have been in the last 2000 years after His death. How few there have been that through the eyes of faith have called upon Christ to save them?
At His Second Coming - Every Eye…
If you have not seen the Glory of the Lord through the eyes of faith, then you cannot wait until His second Coming because at that point His Glory will annihilate you...
There are some incredibly strong forces in this universe but they don’t compare to the power of His Second Coming!
