Have you ever wondered why clocks run clockwise?
Before there were clocks, there were sundials.
In the northern hemisphere,
the shadows on the sundial rotate
in the direction we now call clockwise,
and the hands of the clock mimic
the natural movements of the sun.
So too our lives should imitate the Son of God.
Eph. 5:14-20
Today I would like to look at walking wisely as a Child of the Light
Elvis sang a Song that said
Wise men say Only Fools Rush in
and with the truth of that verse we find many rushing into
different things without consulting the Lord
You Walk in Alertness (Vs. 14-16)
You Walk in Alertness (Vs. 14-16)
Be alert to Opportunities
Opportunities to:
do good
minister to needs
to witness
If not alert we will miss
Vs. 14
Church Gets the light of heaven
She is not to lie still
as if She were asleep or dead
But is to be active
Making use of Her light
Illuminating the World.
As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.
Henry David Thoreau
Vs. 15
Circumspect- careful to consider all circumstances and possible consequences- Webster
Where full consideration is given to all that you do to see if it is truly what God would have you to do
If you allot your day and say, "I am going to give so much time to this, and so much to that," and God's providence upsets your timetable, what becomes of your spirituality?
Oswald Chambers (1874 1917)
Vs. 16
Idea of a merchant
who knowing the value of an article
and the good use he can put it
Buys it up.
The opportunity is that of spreading the Light to those around them and acting according to it
Because the days are evil-
Because of the evil which is growing
And needs the light
Can be proven even today.
You not only walk in alertness but...
You Walk in Obedience to God (Vs. 17)
You Walk in Obedience to God (Vs. 17)
Be Obedient to God
Wherefore- Because you are Children of Light
because light is so valuable
Because all that you do deserves your extreme caution
Be Ye not Unwise or senseless
Understanding- both knowing and lying to heart
“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.
Understand it not or does not consider or ponder
Not how will I benefit
But what is God’s will for my life
We must realized that not we but God knows best.
You not only walk in alertness and obedience but...
You Walk a Life Open to the Spirit(Vs. 18)
You Walk a Life Open to the Spirit(Vs. 18)
Drunkenness as a work of darkness
Leads to acting unwisely
Paul has the social aspect of drunkeness in mind
the idea of the false high spirits it can project
When truly it is a depressant
But be filled with the Spirit
Instead of turning to the false to cheer you
turn to the Holy Spirit
Who truly can cheer you
To live wisely we must be filled with the Holy Spirit
One can live two types of lives
The Sin Controlled life vs The Spirit controlled Life
See attachment
You not only walk in alertness, obedience, and openness but...
You Walk Willing to Worship with One Another(Vs. 19)
You Walk Willing to Worship with One Another(Vs. 19)
The idea of Social gathering
Wherever and whenever you come together do so in an attitude of worship
“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
Every time we use to get together at Grandma’s House
Music can lift the heart
in the war we would sing
You not only walk in alertness, obedience, openness, and willingness but...
You Walk Thankful to God(Vs. 20)
You Walk Thankful to God(Vs. 20)
Excellent way to keep the heart in good tone
To keep up being happy
Notice it is not occasionally but always
In the name of Christ
Who is our high priest
You are to walk in alertness, obedience, openness, willingness, and thankfulness.
