Acts 2 1-4
“And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Acts 2:1-4 ASV
And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams:”
Acts 2:12, 14-17
Acts 2:28-37
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with =one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
Introduction:
My brothers and sisters. Im concerned, Someone may ask why am I concerned, Im concerned because the church has adopted the stiff spirit.
Church is the only place that we can come and we are exected to sit down, dont say nothing dont do nothing and dont particiapt.
We watch and go to the football and basketball Game we yell scream cheer and shout, When we go the reception, we two step we high five we juke and celebrate.
But when we come to to church we forget about everything we did before we got saved.
I dont know about you but I refuse to let my last dance be in the club. I refuse to let my dance be at a reception.
I heard the late Bishop G.E Patterson say I havnt stop dancing. I just switched partners.
I come to encourage you that the same energy that you gave the devil ought to be multipled when you turn your life over to God.
Church should not be boring.
However when you come into the house of the Lord, David said it like this enter into his courts with Thanks giving and enter into his gates with praise, be thankful unto him and bless his name..
And the Lord is that spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty..
BE freee!!!!
Zacahriah 4:6
Not by migh not by power but by my spirit..
In the Old testament
Colosions tells as that the presences if the Lord was understood by the filling was not
John the baptisit explained that I baptised with water but he that comes after will baptist with the holy ghost and fire
Jesus promised God spirit within those who belived that he died and rose again
The night before he died he said I will give you the spirit of truth.
Pentecost, which means "fiftieth day," took place fifty days after Jesus' resurrection, during the Jewish feast of Shavuot. So today marks 50 days after easter. The disciples had gathered in one accord, fervently praying, when suddenly, the sound of a mighty rushing wind filled the room, and tongues of fire appeared above each one of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, proclaiming the wonders of God.
This extraordinary event marked the birth of the Church, as the Holy Spirit enabled the disciples to boldly proclaim the gospel to people from various nations and languages. It was a divine empowerment that transcended cultural and linguistic barriers, uniting diverse people under the banner of Christ's love and salvation.
The Holy Spirit, my dear friends, is not merely an abstract concept or a distant force. He is the very presence of God actively working within us. Through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered with spiritual gifts to serve and edify the body of Christ. He grants us wisdom, discernment, and understanding of God's Word. He comforts us in times of trouble, brings healing to our brokenness, and strengthens us in moments of weakness.
The Holy Spirit also convicts us of sin, leading us to repentance and transformation. He guides us along the path of righteousness and helps us grow in holiness. When we yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit, we are transformed from the inside out, becoming more like Christ each day.
Pentecost Sunday serves as a reminder of the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the Church. It is a call for us to open ourselves to His presence, to invite Him to move freely in our hearts and in our gatherings. Just as the early disciples were empowered by the Holy Spirit to spread the gospel, we too are called to be witnesses of Christ in our families, communities, and the world.
Today, let us seek a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit. Let us ask Him to renew our hearts, to ignite within us a passion for God's kingdom, and to empower us to fulfill our purpose as ambassadors of Christ. May we be open vessels, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us, guiding our thoughts, words, and actions.
As we celebrate Pentecost, may we be reminded that the Holy Spirit is not confined to a single day or a specific event in history. He is with us every moment of our lives, empowering us, comforting us, and leading us into all truth. May we be sensitive to His promptings, obedient to His guidance, and surrendered to His will.
Many people come to church looking to receive something. Rather it be a prayer that they need answered,Rather it be to be uplifted Or just someone who they feel they can relate too When we come to this house of God all of us should come with a spirit of expectancy. We all came In with a need that we wanted met. There is a saying that we should not leave the church the same way we came. We are living in a day and time now we're people young and old is looking for a move of God. I believe this is the day and age we're people are not coming to church looking for the latest Gossip. I believe that they are not coming to church to see who have the best fashion or who can dress the best. I believe God is raising up a remnant of Christians whose desire is more of God. Do I have anyone in here that can say I really want more of God.Because the reality is if I came to church looking for any thing other then God I could have stayed were I was.But the reason I pressed my way here is because I know that God ha something greater for me then we're I was. We should be able to think of the goodness of Jesus and all he's done for us and just the thought of how far the lord has brought us is enough for Us to lift our hand and tell God thanks. Just that thought is enough for us to open our mouths and give him Glory. Because the reality is.. that if it had not been for the lord who was on our side most of us would not be here today...
Leading up to the text
Jesus had risen from the the dead and walked with them for forty days and he commanded them to fast and pray for the high spirit..
It was in John 14 that Jesus informed the disciples that he was going to the cross to be crucified and the disciples began to be troubled.
Jesus tells his disciples in John 14:24 that God will send them a comforter the holy spirit, who will teach them and bring all things that Jesus had told them back to their remembrance.
In acts 1: 8 He says to the disciples that you shall receive Power after that the holy ghost shall come upon you and you shall be witness unto me in Jerusalem Judaea and in Samaria and the uttermost part of the earth
Jesus was speaking in the encounter that we read about in Acts 2 1-4
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Now in acts
Christ their Sheppard had been removed from the flock. He was now in heaven.
As the sheep of his flock they had lost their security blanket...
we find Jesus after his life death and resurrection showing himself to the disciples
So the disciples had been driven to their knees to pray for the Holy Spirit
The disciples were driven to pray
On this day, the disciples were gathered in one place, waiting for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. Suddenly, the sound of a rushing wind filled the room, and tongues of fire rested upon each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages, enabling them to proclaim the Gospel to people from various nations. Pentecost signifies the fulfillment of Christ's promise to send the Helper, who would guide and empower His followers.
.As we get to the text
If you read the 2nd chapter of acts later on you find the first sermon preached in the church. We find peter after those who had experienced the Pentecostal experience- Preaching the first sermon the Holy Ghost The Bible says in the 38th verse of the 2nd chapter that Peter preached so hard that they were prickled in their spirit, They feel convicted. Their consciensnes was awakened, until they cried out what must we do…..We need to go back to preaching until they cry out what must I do to be saved, Preach until the Power of the HolyGhost fall.
The first thing Peter Tells them do is Repent, Be Baptised, receive the Holyghost=- Notice he didn’t say you will catch the Holy Ghost, The Holy Ghost is something that you receive, and in order to receive the Holyghost your heart must be receptiive, Recieve.
If you want to know how to receive his spirit, first we got to repent, Then we have to be bapitzed, then we are filled with his spirit.
I remember growing up will would be at the alter the mothers would in our ear telling us to call on the name of Jesus. And we will jesus jesus jesus, It was good that we did that but no matter how or what we did we had to have a heart to receive it.
This Promise of the Holyghost was not only for them but for them and their children. And as many as the lord shall call. The Holy Ghost is not just for a few, but The Holy Ghost is for anyone who confess with their mouth and believe in their heart, and be willing to receive the Holyghost,
As a gift, the Holy Spirit is not deserved or earned. He is not given as a reward, perhaps for being good and faithful, or for achieving or attaining a high degree of holiness, but rather to empower or enable attainment of these. However, the Holy Spirit, being a gift, means that He has to be accepted to be owned by God.
This same Day that Peter preached about 3000 souls were added to the kingdom——-We are in the soul winning business
Acts 2:1 It is possible that God gave the Holy Spirit on Pentecost to contrast with the law. The law was an external means of restraining Israel from sin, but in the new era of the church, the Holy Spirit would provide internal power for believers to live righteously
Believe it or not my brothers and sisters we are all witnesses that not only did he die but he rose again on the third day not only that but he left us a comforter, How do I know because It is by his spirit that we are able to live right. It is by his spirit that we are able to fulfill the call and assignment on our life. (Its no goodness of my own) but I thank God for the Holy Ghost. If it was up to me I would of been dead . IF it was up to me, I would have been locked up, But I thank God for the Holy Ghost, IF it was up to me I would be lost like a ship without a sail, but I thank God for the Holy Ghost. It kept my mind, It kept spirit.
Acts 2 speaks of after Jesus Ascension he now sits at the right hand of the father and he then having received of the father the Promise of the Holyghost,
Peter again quoted the words of David when he spoke it before time in Psalms 110:1 “The Lord said into me sit at the right hand of the father until I make your enemies your footstool.
Jesus is ultimately exalted as the truth Messiah, and those who dwell with him and his spirit can step over any obstacle…
When you walk with him he turned your stumbling block into a stepping stone.
During Peter’s sermon the crowd experienced some emotional trauma it peirced their heart their question is what should we do.
Lets Look at the steps
-Peter responds repent
—— it is imperative that we understand the verb repent, though in English the focal point is to the sorrow or contrition that person experiences after a wrong.
However the greek word means to change in respects to how ones think or act….
Often times we hear the sorrow, However we don’t see the change….
Im changing……
After they were changed they were added to the kingdom..
During my time of athletics. We would have to do an exercise called the bench press. Every once in a while when doing the bench press but we had to figure out our Max bench press. A max bench press is maximum total weights one could lift.
To determine your Max amount of weights you would have put a lot of weights in the bar and push as hard as you can.
But if you got to a place that you could not lift the weights anymore you will yell. “SPOT”
The spotter is the person behind you that then lifts the weight off your chest and put it back on the bar or he will help you lift the weights to complete your amounts of reps.
In other words a spotter is a helper.
This Christian Journey could be compared to a lifter who’s trying all he or she can to lift the weight of sin off of their chest to live a holy righteous life.
“You need help”
His help is the holyghost
The Holy Ghost is the spotter for the everyday Christian to help lift the temptation and various trials we face on a day to day basis.
(Do I anyone here that can say there where many times if it had not been for the Holyghost I would have told somebody off a long time ago.
If it has not been for the Holyghost I wouldn’t know were I would be.)
The Holy Ghost does not remove temptation. However, the spirit that is in us once we receive it allows us to overcome temptation and sin.
The Holy Ghost empowers us to speak and remain courteous to folk we know just got done talking about us.
The Holy Ghost empowers us to be kind to those who are just mean and spiteful.
The Holy Ghost empowers us to show Love to those we know don’t like us.
There is no way we can accomplish these things on our own.
“Tell somebody you need help”
Once we accept Jesus Christ as our personal savior and believe that he died on the cross and rose on the third day we become saved.
I’m sure most of in here will recognize ourselves as believers and therefore we are saved. Meaning that we believe that Jesus lived, performed miracles, Died on the cross and rose on the third day. However since you believed have you received the Holy Ghost.
Because its important for us in tis day and age.
We are living in a day and age when we hear of violence everyday right here in our own community. We live in a day and age when most have abandoned integrity and embraced immorality.
So the question becomes, How can I live a saved life when there are so many temptations and We are constantly faced with our sinful desires?
The answer is we can. We just need help.
That help is the Holyghost.
Well, who is the holyghost?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity that gives power within the believer to the maintain his salvation when his flesh is working to fulfill its own desires.
How many can testify that there have been times when my flesh wanted to rise up but the holyghost worked on my conscience and worked on my mind and gave me power to overcome what the enemy attempted to use to make me stumble and fall.
My brothers and sisters a Believer life begins when it becomes non-reliable on the flesh and totally dependent on God’s spirit. Christ could not fulfill his mission unless he was empowered by the spirit.
According to Galations 5:22,23
Once we receive his spirit we exemplify the spirits fruit of the spirit. Which is Love, Joy peace, long-suffering , kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control.
When we receive the Holy Spirit it replaces your fleshy spirit with God’s spirit.
It changes your spirit. Your ways change.
If you were mean before you received the Holy Ghost you should be a littler nicer now.
If you were a curser before you received the Holy Ghost you at least curse less.
I know some people say I born this way it’s just who I am.
I was born this way However In John 31-7 You must be born again.’
Tell somebody I need his help.
This was the promise
The hall of fame of faith members did not get see this day. This was a the day that they all dreamed of.
Acts one an 8th after the Holy Spirit come upon you you shall have power...
We understand that in the gospel according to acts 2:1- we find that when the day of Pentecost had truely come they were all one accord And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
o the text we understand that the disciples had been in the upper room fasting and praying for the past ten days and on the day of Pentecost some accused to disciples of being drunk...It was not just an ordinary service..
But it was a move of God...
The people wondered if they were drunk with wine ..
However they were drunk but not with wine...
The were were driven under the influence of the holy ghost...
The reason people misconceived drunk in the spirit and drunk with wine
I don’t know about y’all but I went to my share of parties and one thing I found out about those of us who used get drunk with wine. If you have been saved all of your life This may not be for you. However to those who can say that When you had enough drinks in the natural you was gonna dance, or talk or sing because>However some us should get drunk in the spirit of the Holy Ghost you gonna sing and dance.they were not concerned with who were looking at them...
Somebody say the Holy Ghost will make act like this.....
It will Make you run when nobody behind you...
It will Make you cry when no one has bothered....
And to some people it make them look and ask what is this that feeling on the inside..Well this is that...what the prophet Joel spoke of...it's the Holy Spirit. It will lead you to all truths Or maybe someone here that can say Iam saved I've accepted Jesus in my life but I want to receive the Holy Spirit. I believe the God is ready to send an outpouring of his spirit in this place. That whatever you need it's in the house..I need an outpouring of the holy spirits
3. Empowerment for Mission:
The disciples, who were once timid and fearful, were transformed into bold witnesses after receiving the Holy Spirit. They fearlessly proclaimed the Good News of Jesus Christ, and as a result, thousands of people came to faith that day. Pentecost teaches us that we too have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill the mission of sharing God's love and salvation with others. It encourages us to step out in faith, trusting in the Spirit's guidance and relying on His strength to make a difference in the world.
May the Holy Spirit fill us with His love, peace, and joy, transforming us into instruments of His grace. And may the fire that ignited the disciples' hearts on that first Pentecost continue to burn brightly within us, igniting a passion for God's kingdom and a desire to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the world.
My brothers and sisters I believe that we are living in a day and age well most Christians have all kinds of ways to attend church and hear the word. We watch it on our phones we have church on our iPad we have church on our computer.
We also have different platforms that people have access to the word of God. We receive the word on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, The word network and trust me I’m a strong and avid supporter of all of these means of receiving the word of God.
In this day age if we dont need anything else we need the word of God. The Bible says that heaven and earth may pass away but my word will remain.
2. Unity in Diversity:
One remarkable aspect of Pentecost is the unity it brought among diverse individuals. People from different nations and cultures were gathered together, yet they were able to understand and connect with the disciples' message in their own languages. The Holy Spirit transcended language barriers, emphasizing the universality of the Gospel. Pentecost teaches us to embrace diversity within the body of Christ, appreciating and valuing the unique contributions each person brings.
My Brothers and sisters can I attest to you that Gods spirit is not anything new to us. Before we were even created his spirit was moved, Genesis 1:2 confirms that the earth was without form and void and darkness was up the face of the deep and SPIRIT of God moved up the face of the earth.
The prophet Joel spoke of his spirit when he said and it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughter shall prophesy , your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
Jesus himself encouraged his disciples when he gives them the breaking news that he himself will be going to prepare a place for us, that he would not be with them always, However he gives the assurance that he will send them another comforter, He reminds them he will not leave them comfortless, He said it is this comforter that shall abide in us forever.
It was for this reason that Jesus commanded his Apostles at the beginning of Acts to stay(Tarry) in Jerusuelam until the promise of the Holy Ghost was received. He affirms them that John truly baptized with Water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
My brothers and sisters I appreciate the Water Baptism, However, When you are baptized in Holy Ghost you dont need a pool, When you are baptized in the Holyghost you dont need a Towel, and you need is to believe and be willing to receive it.It was there waiting in the upper room when they all
Got on one accord on the day of Pentecost and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting there appeared unto them cloven youngest like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tonguies as the spirt gave them utterance.
Let’s Just look at this occasion
They were all on one accord
-How many know that some great things can occur when we all get on one accord.
- Matthew 18:20 Jesus says were there is 2 or three touching and agreeing in my name. I’ll be in midst of them.
-When the church can get on one accord we will lives changes.
-When the church get on one accord we will see the glory of God like never before.
2.There was a sound
-When I was growing up I would hear people say that we were the noisy church. That the Pentecostal-Church Of God In Christ was too loud. However, I believe that every Church should have a Pentecost experience every now and then.
-The text says that there was a sound that sounded as though a rushing wind and the sound filled the house where the people.
-On this day when the lord filled them with Holy Ghost they were not a quiet. However there was noise.
-If you want God to step into your situation sometimes you have to open up your mouth and just make a sound.
-They were filled with the Holyghost and begin to speak with other tongues
-There appeared to them clothing tongues as of fire and they begin to speak in tongues and they were filled with the Holy Ghost.
-The mothers when I was growing used to have tarrying service and we would get down on our needs and call on Jesus until we began to speak in an unknown tongues.
-I know this is not the only way to get some of us didn’t get it that way.
-However, whatever you have to do to have a personal Pentecost. Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to get his spirit.
4. Renewal and Transformation:
Pentecost is not merely a historical event but a continuous invitation to experience personal renewal and transformation. The Holy Spirit works in our lives, convicting us of sin, guiding us into truth, and conforming us to the image of Christ. As we yield to the Spirit's leading, He empowers us to overcome spiritual obstacles, develop the fruits of the Spirit, and live a life marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Conclusion:
The day of Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit is alive and active within the Church and within our individual lives. It calls us to seek a deeper relationship with God, to be open to His transformative power, and to embrace our calling as witnesses of Christ's love. Let us not underestimate the significance of Pentecost but rather embrace the Spirit's presence and power in our lives, allowing Him to guide, empower, and transform us as we walk in faith and fulfill the mission entrusted to us.
May the Spirit of Pentecost continue to ignite our hearts, embolden our faith, and empower us to be agents of God's grace in a world that desperately needs His love. Amen.
I don’t know about you but I need his help.
I need his spirit to keep me.
I need his help. I can’t live right without his spirit.
I can’t effectively minister without his presence .
We must understand that there was an order before they were filled.
They were on one accord, There was a sound and then they were filled.
Make a sound!!!!!!!!!!!
We are going to pray but Grab the person next you hand get on one accord with your neighbor say I touch and agree with you the same power that was experienced on pentecost can take place in your life right now.
Now I want you to make a sound any kind of sound. God hears the sound. Just open your mouth and make a sound. Now say lord give me your spirit. Lord empower me with your spirit. Lord embrace me with your spirit. I receive your spirit. In jesus name Amen.
