SESSION 1: AN UNSHAKABLE FOUNDATION • It is extremely important to build on foundations that are solid. If not, the structure will be in danger of collapsing. In this session we will explore how Jesus is worth building our life and faith upon as a ROCKSTEADY foundation.
House concept: Foundation
This week were talking about Foundational Truth that Jesus spoke. Foundational truth means things you can build your life upon. Another term is transcendent truth meaning something that will always be true at every era of human history for every person. It transcends or rises above time, gender, race, political preference, and anything else you can think of.
If you are going to build your life on something dont you want it to be that?
We talk about this idea of building our life on something and it doesnt seem very important until it really is. This isnt about just constructing a world view. Its about getting what your soul has been longing for. stability and security.
The New International Version Psalm 16
I keep my eyes always on the LORD.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
This is what Jesus says about foundation:
Luke 6:46-49 (NIV) “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
Can I tell you something else? Foundations are boring. This is what they look like:
If you have been around church for a minute can I just give you an encouragement: Dont get bored with the foundational stuff. Dont start trying to build your life on anything else or extra. I see Christians do this all the time. the basic stuff gets old so they want to move on to something more. I want you to grow but you cant change the foundation. Its Jesus. If you start to put hope in your doctrinal bent, political opinions, family, or hobbies you are building on another foundation.
The cost of fragile foundations is not boring:
1989
The quake killed 63 people throughout northern California, injured 3,757 and left some 3,000-12,000 people homeless. 6 billion in damages
Earthquake lasted 10-15 seconds and happened 50 miles away
SF is literally built on sand and clay. Damages were worse there than other areas around the epicenter of the earthquake because they were build on bedrock.
Anyones life ever turned to this in 10-15 seconds it feels like? Have you seen this happen in your parents life or your friends lives?
Heres why you want a good foundation: Because bad stuff is going to happen! And if you don’t then your life can turn to devastation in a moment!
Our core place we will rest in this week is Jesus conversation with his disciples (his boys) in John 14-17 This is right before he is about to die. and thats important because he is preparing his guys to do life without him present. Which means that this is one of the most important sections of scripture for you and I because we are trying to figure out how to live life for Jesus without him present!
Jesus loves his guys and wants to set them up well for this era that we live in currently.
The New International Version (Chapter 14)
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”Jesus the Way to the Father5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
If you knew the way. This is the way to the father which means that its the way to love, good, purpose, hope, joy, peace, fulfillment, belonging, and everything your soul has ever craved. If you knew that way wouldnt your life have STABILITY!
AMPLE PROVISION for the disciples. Not going to run out of room for you. Jesus is going to prepare a place and come back.
Jesus is the way because he is also the truth and the life. That makes him the way. Btw the way of Jesus was suffering, humiliation, gentleness, but also victory and power, and joy.
If you really knew me more like you know me so you will know my father also.
If you stopped looking to your friends and instagram and making your parents proud as your sense of worth but you found worth in: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), 1 Pe 2:9.
If you stopped looking towards college and a career to have hope for your future and instead you found hope in: I hate double-minded people,
but I love your law.
114 You are my refuge and my shield;
I have put my hope in your word.
The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Ps 119:113–114.
If you stopped looking to momentary happiness and fulfilling your desires to bring you joy and instead found joy in: For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Ro 14:17.
You will have a Foundation that is rocksteady if you just start looking in the right place. If you know the way you have a foundation that will last. Because when poop hits the fan you still know where to look.
