Our Big Idea Last week was this.
There is a big difference between Devotional Reading and Contexual Reading the bible.
what is a christian?
one who follows
One who knows
one who confesses
So before we dive back into 1 john can someone read
lets everyone turn to it in there bibles. I know some if not most of us can quote a passage..but lets act as if we were in bible study class for a moment..and were going to take a few commonly known passages so we can better understand some less commonly known ones.
lets take the application of what we know and apply it to what we have yet to learn.
This entire study today isnt testing our common core bible knowledge but giving us an example of how to deepen the state of our knowledge. okay.
Today were going to study one topic...
Where are we in the scripture?
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
in this passage…God so loved the “WORLD”
2 questions…
what word is most important in the first part of this passage?
A). “Loved”
B). the “World”
What is the world?
maybe it is viewed as
A). people,
B). the creation
C). Satan ran evil in the world that we battle
i want us to focus in on world…so lets read another passage
someone else read John 1 10
10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
In this passage what is the world?
19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
So lets read the first verse of our scripture...
i want yall to help me come up with points as if we are trying to write down three things from our study today. okay.
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Okay so where do we come in between these verses?
We are suppose to not love the world.
For we were called away from the world. And directly we are correlated with what? Temptation...
Okay lets for a moment stop here....
These are now instructions for us...
What are these instructions?
dont love the world
dont love lust of the flesh
dont take on pride of life
dont love the things that can pass away.
But love the everlasting God and everything he is apart of,
This is a warning against what?
Our natural instinct of value.
We value pleasures like
Music, art, entertainment, achievements, money, material items right?
Things that ultimately pass away...
To take this deeper for just a moment. If we built our life on this very simple yet RADICAL type of decision. we would be less influenced by so many things.
IF we obeyed this simple yet radical command from God,
If we did we would limit the struggles we have in our thinking..
Because when you live a life for natural valued desires you build your life on “me first” cultural thinking.
you keep thinking about
me first
you do what you want to do as long as you arent hurting people
live and let live
Yolo
Eat Drink and be merry for tommorow we all die
Ideas like this
Religion is okay but dont be too extreme with it
you can live with the opposite sex if you want
you can be homesexual if you want
you can take drugs
and the list goes on....
Yes simply because you dive into a “natural instict of valued desires”
John is instructing us to value something unnaturally
But yet again when we believe we no longer live natural juristidicted lives.
We live Spiritually.
For to this body will pass on.....
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
this passage talks of the guarantee of Spirtual living combing with New Bodily Form...
John makes it clear in this passage…its not a choice of mix and match. its either or...
Okay lets keep going.
18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.
19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.
23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
okay again in this passage vs 18
where are we found in this? What are we called?
Children......
What does the “Last Hour” mean here?
Last Hour: “eschate hora” the last hour has struck
Paul speaks of this in 2 thess 2 1-12 if you want to go hoome and read it…he says. “ The secret power of lawlessness is already at work”
Here in the last hour John gives us a warning
pertaining the the antichrist..
John even in this passage tells us who the antichrist would be.
Gives us some symbols.
Those who have been with us then left us.
Those in vs 22 that denies Jesus.
22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.
for just a moment i want us to look at this...
Those who add to the antichrist…are those who deny the Father and The son....interesting enough they dont deny the power of the Holy Spirit...
But I wont stand on a soap box and talk about that tonight...
Just watch out for the “Christian music” Christian podcast, Christian Preachers Christian book writers…because the denial of Holy Spirit isn’t listed here nor in Revelation...
ITs the denial of The Father and The Son.
But Antichrist means
Those that are against or instead of Christ.
Rev 13 3-18 Antichrist
Daniel 8:23–25 (NIV)
23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise.
24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people.
25 He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand—
understand…its to late. no....
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.
it seems odd that john would say the last hour over 2000 years ago..
however to God a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years a day.
The time john is speaking to and of is the same time you and I live in…a time where
deciet prospers.
Chaos and confusion are ever more abundantly clear.
Our bodies as our world are failing away ....
but the dispensationalism we live in…the Church age is the last age before the tribulation.
Satan is getting more and more desperate and the world in getting more and more sinful.
So to connect our sections.
John says…Focus on God…because....theres an enemy thats has been traping you in wrongful thought. one whos motives are to bring you down and make you worldly...
the one trapping you is preparing the world for the coming of the antichrist…the one who is fully away from God…and he will use all tools available to him. to snare you into a trap of deception.
Set yourself apart. Run Away from wrong thinking and Follow Gods Everlasting Way.
Become a Radical Charismatic, bible thumping nerd…or die trying…because its worth life not only here but after...
A queston for you..
What does that mean for christians?
Closer to the end times will there be a bigger or smaller difference between the world and the church?
Today do we represent that or does it seem the church is more similar to the world?
last question...
How do we change the difference?
I believe…its the church…knowing more…studying deeper, and enabling the Biblical truths to become the way we live...
Contextual Reading…Vs Devotional Reading
Knowing The world ....Vs....Getting a affirmation each morning.
Thats the difference.
Eternally knowing the World/growing....vs....Circumstantially growing...
I challenge you to read the bible in a manner worth studying.
To stop get a journal spend quality and substancial time in your word.
The best thing a christian can do is come to church and hear confirmation in a passage not hear something for the first time.
17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.
18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
Has the challenge ive given you....been contrary to the bible....or is it in alignment with the Word of God.
