The Family Altar that Alters Your Family
Job chapter 1 today. A little more serious note, many of you years ago, heard of a guy named Milton burrow. He said, If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands. Nobody loves you. Black mambas. And dumb. I know there's always exceptions to the rule. They always have one cuz I had a horrible mother. Well, you know, God bless your heart but a lot of us had great ones. And today we celebrate that and if your mom's here or alive that you can speak to him call them, you're blessed. And I know that, you know, that today we've been doing a series on altars and our series on altars have collided with Mother's Day. And so you'll wonder what kind of why am I dealing with this on Mother's day. But you understand and it it kind of fits just right. I've shared some of these things in years past we have some new people because it's Mother's Day because we've been doing this series on altars. I feel like we need to understand how our study on altars how it really hits home. How you know we've been given as we've been kind of dealing with all the the biblical definitions and then all those things. But what is this mean for us? What is this mean for me? Joe chapter 1 and I want to talk today about the family altar that alters your family, the family altar that alters your family. Joebuz the kind of man that you like to have in your church and had 12 kids, wealthy and was a very blessed man. What's interesting is that the Bible, does it say that jove ever saw himself as much? The Bible says that God saw more and Jobe then Jobe even saw it himself. Look at verse 1 of Jobe chapter 1. There was a man in the land of us whose name was Joe in. That man was perfect. And upright one that fear. God and issued evil. They were born in him, seven sons and three daughters versus substance. Also was 7,000 sheep, and three thousand camels, 500 yoke of oxen 500, she answers, which would be female donkeys and a very great household. So that this man was the greatest of all the men of the East and his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day and since and called for their three sisters to eat and drink with them and it was. So when the days of their feasting were gone about, The job sent and Sanctified them and Rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all for Joe said, it may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. That's did Jobe continually But we pray some, I guess it's been 11 years ago. Now, our son Kayden was born at Chapel Hill hospital. We knew it was obviously his rare heart defect. And so day three was open, heart surgery and a three-month-old, a was another open, heart surgery and things. And Had a lot of time there at the hospital. When I was there I just become Kind of Pastor of this church and so I was half the time at Chapel Hill half the time here. My mom was dying with cancer and it was just a difficult time. So, I was at the hospital one day and I found looks and crannies at the hospital. I found abandoned offices. Literally walking around Chapel Hill, Hospital to Peak in, have devotions, I can still take it to some, I don't know if they put somebody in those offices. Now, I probably ended up where I shouldn't have been, but God knew I needed. Just two some privacy to look at a different wall for a while. And one day I was in there and I was praying about prayer and I said, Lord, I don't really know how to pray for my son. I don't know what to ask for. I don't I don't even know half of what he's dealing with. He can't verbalize it, we know the obvious. How do I pray for him? and I said, Lord, I need you to teach me how to pray for my family different because I don't feel like anything's working. And I have a love-hate relationship with the book of Joe. I don't really enjoy messages out of the book of Joe and God took me to this passage. So two things just want to share with you today. First is Jobe in the home? Second is Jobe at the altar and I will let you go home. Let's pray, Lord. I love you and thanks for all that. You've done. Thank you for every person here. What I pray that will look to your word today to learn what you want us to learn. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen. First, the information and then just a few minutes we're going to give me the application, Jobe in the home and I want to talk about what it was like, for jobin, mrs. Jobe there. According to these verses in their house, won't you notice number one in the home? As a parent joebuz challenged with the demands of parenting? Bible says he had ten children. I don't know about you. That's that's, that's a lot of responsibility that there are a lot of Demands there. Thank God, they didn't have drive through restaurants back then, can you imagine having to give 12 orders at a drive-thru for a family like that? I mean, you have to be to drive a church van number one, and then you'd have to be going through the drive-thru. And the man usually is Driving in the man hates giving orders and and those details drive him nuts. Just imagine, but here at your joke, had ten children and he had the responsibility to try to make sure all 10 children knew that he loved. How do you spend time with 10 children? I mean, how do you make time for each of them? Jobe dealt with the demands of parenting. And maybe today, some of you are dealing with the demands of parenting. Notice number to jobos challenge with the diversity of parenting. Bible said he had seven sons and three daughters. How many? No boys and girls are different. And why he gave me seven sons and three daughters. Why did God only give him three daughters? Well because it takes as much time for three girls as it does 7, boys. You know what I'm saying? Or 88 years of all go play ball or something like that but he had not only the demands that he had ten children to be a good parent to but he also had to figure out how to be a good parent. Two, seven three daughters and all of them are different. Than we all know that every child is different. Somehow, he had to convince seven sons that he loved each of them, knew about each of them, cared about each of them, new little details about each of them, then three daughters and he had to spend time and love them and show them that Akira. And it at the same time, each all of them. The things of God character in life morality and all these things. Won't you notice number 3, joebuz challenge with the distractions. Of parenting in verse 3. The Bible says that he had a great house hole. That means this, imagine the responsibility that Joe pad. He didn't just have ten children. He didn't just have seven sons and three daughters. There were 7,000 sheep to keep sheared. There was three thousand camels to get water to. There was a thousand awesome that had to be contained and fed every day. They were $500 keys and all of them were female donkey's back. As stubborn as you can possibly get, happy Mother's Day to you.
I want by the nursery today and there were assault, least three mothers in there. Watching kids, I love I said, Happy Mother's Day.
What are Mother's Day for these poor mothers, have to go on Mother's Day and work in the nursery. How many do you think it's a church where they do something special for the mothers that are in the nursery today? How many do you think? I'll just give him a hand to do something, how would they even know? Right, I say, let's go eating certificate or something like that. For every mother that is working in the nursery today. You all agree with that same in a man. Alright, so, brother, Jacob, Jeff. Whoever make sure that we get certificates to these mothers and so, here we go here, he's got all this to do. The Bible says he had a very great household, Sundays are his property to care for building the main thing, he was self-employed the owned his own business. He had employees, to pay accounts, payable account receivable, customers to appease books to balanced house to keep up with, who knows how many miles to feed a wife to try to keep a p and every one of these We're not bad things. They were important things and they were necessary thing. But every one of them represented something that can distract you from what's most important. How many do you know that you have necessary things in your life but they can become distractions? From what is most import? Number for, I want you to see the joebuz challenged with the display of parenting and verse 3 in the Bible says that God said he was the greatest of all men in the east. The greatest of all men in the East. Now that you know, Joe didn't say that about himself, God said that about Joe but how many of you know, that when there's somebody that good that everybody else gets a little bit jealous. Everything Joe had done at touch to turn to Gold. He was wealthy, he had a good family, he had all this property had all these things and even God said that he was a perfect man to shoot evil. Imagine how many guys in that area weren't quite as successful as Mister jobin didn't have quite the character of mister jobin. I don't know about you, but how many of them are probably watching everything he did? Was just analyzing everything that he did. Can you imagine the pressure? That was on him. Everybody was watching mr. Perfect. He was on display.
I don't know about you, but it's tough when there are people that they just want to find fault with you. How many you know that, if you want to find fault with anybody, you're going to find it.
I want you to notice number 5, Jokers challenge with the dangers of parenting. Can happen. Uber support. Bible says in his sons went and feasted in their house, is this word for feasted in the Hebrew? it doesn't mean that the boys, How to barbecue.
It means they were partying. It means that they became inebriated. It means that they were just having a good old time and they were doing some things that Joe had always taught them not to do their out-of-control noticed this. It says they were feasting in their houses. Everyone is dead. I mean it's went on.
In the Bible says that they were feasting in their houses. His sons were some of his sons were growing up and they're out of the house. We find here later, the joke had kids in the house and he had two kids out of the house. And he'll here's what is the dangers of parenting is what you can, raise your kids, and teach your kids, and you can plead with your kids and you can show them the Bible, and you can tell them the dangers when you can give them illustrations and you can warn them and warn them, and warn them to you, have tears in your eyes and it and you know what you're talkin about, you've been through it, you've been there and you look and you couldn't love them as much. You can spend a lifetime doing that and 5 minutes around the wrong friend, or the wrong girlfriend or the wrong boyfriend can ruin their life.
The danger. All of us have his parents. You can do everything you can do. And sometimes steal your kids will look at you. And go their own way. I want you to notice number six, joebuz challenge with the decisions of parenting. The Bible says that his son's here, where their own houses that he's got a decision to make. I mean, where's the line is apparent? I mean, I kind of been around house now, so, is it? Do I cross the line and say something, I mean, do I do I get on them, do I chew them out but yet, they're grown up enough to run their own house and it's kind of their own life. Now, Some of you parents are dealing with that your your grown children sometimes go off in directions and you know where it's heading and you know, the danger of it but where is that line of what you say? And what you do? I want you to notice here last week, that Joe was challenged with the discretion of parent. Bible says in verse five, that And I love this. By the way, it says that it was. So when the days that they're feasting were gone about that joke, sent and Sanctified them a joke show discretion you're not looking too bad. We're talkin about Joe but the home we're getting ready to go somewhere different direction but Joe didn't just go show up there at their house with their friends. In the people, they were with and belittle them. And attacked them. And just absolutely embarrassed them half to death. Bible says, job sent and Sanctified them job is going to be honest with them. But Joe didn't do it in front of everybody. In the Bible says fathers provoke. Not your children to rent so Jobe showed discretion in parenting. He he knew that line where have got to be truthful with them but I don't need to do it in the way. This is going to absolutely embarrass them and demoralize them. Jobe in the home. And in the home, some things happened that or some of our worst fears, he's raised his kids right? God said he was a perfect dad and he eschewed evil and now his boys were running right into it. now, I want you to see Joe, but at the altar,
Number one, I want you to see in verse five that joke, showed defiance. In verse five, it says that he sent and Sanctified them and Rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them, all Joe realize that there are times in the life of your children, when they don't need your public preaching, they need your private pray.
What does it mean? When the Bible says he sent and Sanctified them, will this word Sanctified, this very, very interesting. As You Follow It Through the Bible. It's the word to call Dash and as you follow through the Bible, it basically means to consecrate you say preacher. What does that mean? It means little each other to make clean ceremonially or even morally to dedicate. It's like, we just did last week. Dedicating a baby to the Lord. What Joe was talking about here is that when he found out that his kids were doing something that he knew, wasn't right? The Bible says that he Sanctified them, he got down. He went to God and dedicated them. All over again. You say what does that mean? It means he wasn't just going to sit back and let Satan have them. He decided that he was going to fight for his kids and he was going to fight for their spiritual lives, but he was going to have to do it through prayer.
Now, I find this interesting. Exit is 3030 Emmaus on anoint, Aaron and his sons and consecrate them. Same word Joe was this what was he doing? He was reminding his kids when he sent to them and sanctify them. He brought his sons together. He reminded them that they had been sanctified. What is that mean? They had been set apart for God. All growing up all my child has. Let me tell you something, my mom and my dad constant. You all heard me say this through my entire life constantly told me Daniel. You belong to God. You don't belong to yourself. Daniel, when you were a baby, we dedicated you to the Lord just like we did last week. Here, we dedicated you to go and I got a picture and in my house also over there at the missions. House of dr. Lee Robertson, prison tattoos, YouTube University dedicating need of the Lord, they have 45 preachers. You talk about dedicated, I'm dead again.
I didn't have a chance.
My mom and dad would consciously tell me Daniel you've been set apart for God's use. Don't you use your life? You go out here in this world and just have fun. Do what you want to do. You've been set apart for God to use. God's got a plan for your life. God's got a purpose for your life. You've been set apart. You're not like everyone else gone and we gave you back to God. I can only encourage every young person here. Every teenager whoever my bill is God's got a purpose for your life. If you've been saved by the grace of God, you've been set apart, you've been called out. God's got a perfect plan, he's got a purpose, and it's great. And so many kids, never find it.
Show settings reminded them. You've been Sanctified and courage, some parents here this morning on Mother's Day. Special, some mother's here today, don't give up on your kids. Don't give up on your grandkids. Don't say what bus, got off break, right on it. They're just getting worse than what. You just keep praying. You just keep praying, you just keep praying. You do you do the battle at the altar? I want you to notice. Secondly, he showed desperation the Bible here in verse 5, says that jobros up early. Now get this. What does it mean for a job to offer? Burnt offerings, Jesus hadn't come yet. Jesus has died on the cross for our sins. Yet the Messiah hadn't come yet. And that means this for jove to talk to God, there had to be an altar. A joke to talk to God, there had to be a sacrifice for Joe to be able to talk to God. He had to get up and he had to build an altar and he had to put wood on the Altar and he had the fire on that Altar and he had to get a sacrifice on that Altar for him to go to God. You and I are blessed because he bruise teaches us and we'll talk about of the weeks ahead of the Jesus is our Altar. And that means now that you and I can talk to God anytime we want to, we don't have to go build an altar, we don't have to sacrifice anything, we can be driving in our car and talk to God. You can talk to him right now. Say Lord help him to wrap this up quick.
He probably won't hear you but I know you can go ahead and pray.
So, what does it mean? That means that Joe got up early enough every day. To build an altar. Sabrina sacrifice. And to pray.
Prince children.
John Bunyan said this, he who runs from God early in the morning, Will probably not find in the rest of the day.
This means before Jobe
did any business? He did business with God.
This means before, important things were accomplished, the most important thing was accomplished. It means before he did any accounts payable and accounts receivable, he went to God in prayer before he got busy, doing anything else with all these responsibilities that he had, he made it a priority. First thing early every morning that he was going to pray for his children.
It's amazing. How many things we put before? The things of God, amazing? How many things we put before the house of God? It's amazing. How many things we put?
It's amazing. How many things we put before on marriages? Number three. He show dedication. Bible says he offered burnt offerings. So, Joe went through this effort every day. Not just a, once a month. So, every day before, he did anything for work, before he did anything for business, Joe wouldn't get up every morning and he would build an altar, and he would put wood on the Altar and he would sacrifice for his children. That's how dedicated he was. Not only that, can I show you next, he showed distinction. What do you mean? You showed just notice what the first text and said, this job did. No, notice I love this. He offered burnt offerings, according to the number of them all.
Did you hear this? Joe didn't just build an altar the morning and just say, God bless my kids. Job, pray for each one of them separately. Joe went through the process of doing this 10 times, every morning, he pray for each of them, according to the number of them, all he had learned his kids so that he can pray for each of them according to their weaknesses and their strengths. No, I have 3, boys. I have Daniel, Hudson and Katie and part of my job as a dad is to get to know them well enough. So that when I get down and pray, I know what to pray for in their lives. Now there's going to be going to know what to pray for. And I'll just have to say God, you know, more than I do. I don't know, I don't understand, but you're going to have to do it but has a dad. I need to be able to know them. Well, enough to have spend enough time with him to have, analyzed them that I can say. You know what? Lord, I pray, you help me anyway. As a weakness in this area has the strength in this area. Use that for your glory. God bless Hudson over here, if he's not careful saying he's going to use and he's going to come after this weakness of God will strengthen their, you know, what happens? A lot of parents don't know their kids.
Jobe pray for all 10 kids every morning before he did anything else.
Not only that number five, you showed discernment. We're almost done to get this. Look at the first five. Why did Joe get up and do this? He said for Jobe said, it made me that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. Did you get that? Joe got up in the morning and he prayed, he said, God, I'm coming to you on behalf of my kids. God my kids may have done some things that I don't even know about. And this is what Joe said, God. I see on the outside but for all I know, they might have cursed you in their hearts. That means just so, you know it. Sometimes kids can sit right here in church and look one way. But in their heart, they're a long way from God. JoJo got up every morning, you said God for all, I know, I know Sunday certain things about my kids, but I don't know everything about my kids and God, I don't know their hearts and I don't know what might be going on inside her every morning, Joe would get up and he said, God, I pray, you, and plus my kids. Plus this one, and bless this once and got, I know that his heart might. Strong right now. There might be some sending his heart. There might be some things inside that, I don't like her that I don't see and God.
Want you to notice this last? He showed dependency. Leave the last little phrase in verse 5, thus did Jobe. Continually. He didn't do this once in awhile.
He did it every day.
He did it continually. Can I ask you something who's going to pray for your kids? If you don't?
can I when I ask you this,
You think you would help me? And sometimes just pray all through the night for a kid's, you a preacher or you going to do it. You think somebody that they're not even their kids are going to do it if you don't?
You see Joe realized if I don't do this, nobody might. Jobe realized if I don't pray for my kids this way. Nobody's going to Jobe realize that, you know what some of them are out of my house. But this verse says that the daughters were still in the house and the suns were trying to get the daughters to come party at their house. So Joe had a little bit of a mess on his hands, but you know what? He went to God, build an altar, he did it yesterday. He's going to do it today and he's going to do it tomorrow and he's going to do it the next day. And he's going to do it next week and next week and next week. Because if he doesn't pray for his kids and he doesn't fight for his family, who's going to
18 year old Hudson Taylor. Wandered into his father's library and he read a gospel track. You just couldn't shake off the message of that track. Finally, he fell to his knees and he accepted Jesus. Pastor singer Hudson Taylor. later is mother who is out of town return home and when he told her the good news she said I already know. 10 days ago, the very date on which you tell me you read that track. I spent the entire afternoon prayer.
Until God told me. That you would get saved.
Beyonce. This look at want you to get this. If you don't know the story. Jokes. Children did not know how little time they had left to live.
You see on our first Joe gets up and he built an altar and he prays for his kids a little. Did he know that day? All 10 of them would be killed.
His kids didn't know how little time they had left. Joe did not know how little time as children had left. Joe did not know what they would face, but can I ask you something? That's a really face. Jay needs to be bathed in Prayer by Mom and Dad.
Can I ask you something? You say preacher.
Do you think that those children went to heaven? Yes, I do.
It will put you, I don't see anywhere near that they got save well. Salvation, little bit over the Old Testament anyway, but Joe B taught them, right? He say why Will because in chapter 1 and 2 when Satan came in and he took everything that joke had you get all the way to the end of the book and Joe chapter 41 and 42, we find that God doubled, everything that joke at Satan took you seven thousand sheep will God gave him fourteen thousand sheep. He took his $1,000 and God gave him $2,000. But when you get to chapter 42, the Bible says God gave him 10 more children. Why did he double that? Because he didn't lose the first 10.
They were in heaven.
Imagine where they might have been. I drove. All those years. Been faithful to get up and pray. Bush's children. I was sitting there that day. And that little office, I was supposed to be at Chapel Hill. Can I read those first five verses? Some of you have shared this with some of you before, so if you don't wouldn't understand, I was raised in a Christian Home in my parents were strict, not going to go through all that. But I was going to grow up in an Airstream travel trailer and it's kind of hard to hide anything in an Airstream travel trailer. Your living. No. More than 30 feet away from each other all the time. The way our an Airstream travel trailer was made, when you came in the door, there was a front couch, you walk through a kitchen area, then there was a little bedroom area. Where is a couch that slipped out made of bear? That was my mom and dad's bed that front couch was mine and then in the rear of the Airstream was a bathroom shower and toilet all that. That was where my mom had her devotions every morning. Now, I've told you this for listen and I'm not exaggerating. I just don't have recollection. I'm sure it happened. She had to have been sick. She had to had those days. I just do not have recollection of ever getting up, and my mom being in it. Just, it's just not a memory of mine. My mom was always up early. I just don't ever remember her being in bed. I don't have regulation to coming in. Talk to you tomorrow. I'm in bed. I just don't. And every morning, my mom will get up and she had a box. She kept all her devotional books, and she would pray in the rear of that Airstream in that bathroom. So, whenever either of us, got up in the morning time to get up, I finally wake up and I had to use the restroom. I have to go and knock on that door. And my mama, going to hold on. And she didn't get all the books in the Bible and all the stuff. Put in the box, set it up cuz she was sitting there stirring has a toilet, where you have a lid that you have a padded thing that came across that you can sit on it. That's what she would sit. And have her private devotions every morning. And I would come and use the restroom and I would leave and she go back to her devotion. My mom did this every morning. I don't I don't remember him or anywhere. I just got up and went to the bathroom. Part of my routine was knocking on the door to go into the bathroom. It was the only private place in an Airstream travel trailer, and this was recollection of mine growing up for my entire life. And you say where you were you always a good kid, you talk to my mom. My mom would say Daniel was always a good kid. You talk to my dad, he be like, you know everything and I started rebelling and I rebelled around fifteen years of age. My mom and dad came off the road, Pastor to the church for a little while, and then they decided to go back on the road. Will during that time, I had gone to school and played Sports, I played every sport, there was a lot of sports finally got to play it. Now all the sudden, mom and dad said, we're going back on the road and I had to think about a girlfriend, had to say goodbye to sports social life. And I went back into an Airstream travel trailer with my mom and dad. Now, that's Tuff. The way to go to church, to church. It was just me and a bunch of other kids are staring at you. And I did not handle that. Well, and I became very rebellious and it just it just seemed to manifest itself more with my dad because my mom was long-suffering, but my dad was correct that I was being an absolute jerk and Dad wouldn't going to put up with it. And so it would and I were just kind of like this and I'll never forget my junior year of high school that it just got heated and my mom have been gone to the store. I don't remember what happened. I'm embarrassed about it, but my mom came back and get her something and she came in the trailer and I have my data on my arm under his throat. And I had him up against one of the things that we were, it got physical. And a, my mom came in and started screaming and pulling us apart. She said, that's it. So they put me on an airplane and I went and lived on my own for my senior year of high school.
Came time to go to college. Can I play the sports to my my entire Senior High School? My mom, down there, we can do one game there. They're traveling preacher, we won the state championship. When I play basketball, they weren't state championship. They did come in for my graduation. Thank God for that only because they asked my dad to preach at my graduation.
I thought God wanted me to go to Pensacola Christian College. There wasn't much Christian about me.
So they took me in that Airstream trailer and they're going to drop me off. I was going to work all summer at the college. So, we went to eat that night, got back to the trailer, and Dad's Willits have devotions one. Last time, I wasn't buying it,
But I was starting to get nervous and scared about college.
So that night mom was crying and said you know I'm going to be praying that I miss you so bad by Bon. I was just I can't wait to get out of here.
We pulled out that couch and their streaming one last time. That's where I grew up with, you know, on that damn couch. And I was laying there and I was staring out the back window. The front window that trailer really, and there was a street light that was just brighten. I was just looking at that street light. I was scared, but I was stubborn. and I drifted off to sleep at some point if you have those pictures,
Just recently took my son Hudson to this church. I took the angel there. This week. It's the original Campus Church Pensacola call Taylor Chapel now our travel trailer was parked right there where those parking lines were There's a car that this is right above, it's a street light. I'd like to shoot it out and be honest with you, but that's where we were parked and I was on that front window facing out that way. I was going to go to college next day. About 3 in the morning. I don't know when it was
I just kind of woke up. I don't know why that was laying there. That streetlight was just still Blaring. And I just kept hearing.
And I was laying there facing out the front of the trailer and I don't know why. I just I just kind of looked over my shoulder and
They're at the foot of my bed. On her knees.
Elbows on that bed. Hidden in her hands weeping. My mom was praying. She said, God I know Daniel is a long way away from you right now. Because somehow you're going to have to keep him Jordan clean. You're going to have. Somehow you can have to get a hold of his heart. Parties running from you. But we set him apart for you years ago. You got a plan. I prayed everyday. I know you got something special. Not leave their listen to my library.
Here's just facing out that window.
And I laid there from 3. DeVore. Define. The six. Somewhere around 7:15, she finally stopped praying. And got up went to the bathroom to get ready. I listened for four and a half hours.
Her pleading with God.
She might have been there before that. I don't, whenever I woke up, she was already pregnant. That is something to me.
I'm here to say that I believe, I'm here today by the grace of God. Number two, because I had a mom.
I got up every day.
And just wouldn't let Satan have me.
