After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;

Introductions

Where do you start? How would you introduce someone?
Best characteristics
Notable aspects of someone
The kind of thing people will not forget
What was the first miracle of Christ (hang on to your answer)
The Gospels and Jesus - where they begin
Mark - starting with John the Baptist’s ministry
Eventually, this Man is God
Luke - birth account of JTB and Jesus
Eventually, this Man is God
Matthew - Genealogy, back to Abraham
Luke - Genealogy, back to Adam
Eventually, this man is God
By John’s writing, people knew what had happened (Jesus died, rose…)
But what could that do for them now?
What can John’s Gospel help us with, NOW?
Some key verses/passages:
1:1, 3:16-18, 5:18, 10:30, 11:25, 14:1-6, 20:31

Introducing Jesus, through John

READ: John 1:1-5

1) Christology

A study of Christ
Defining Jesus
JESUS = GOD
John’s take - He speaks truth, as we should
“Let’s go back to the beginning”
JESUS IS GOD - John makes multiple claims to this point
“In the beginning...” - BEFORE CREATION
See Gen 1:1
Genesis 1:1 NASB95
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
There was never a time that God was NOT.
Never a hint of God being created - HE IS (I AM)
With God, Was God
Jesus is present before Creation
There is no “a” before God, and it’s not a little “g”
John’s wording in 1:1 clearly claims deity for Jesus
Also, See John 1:18
John 1:18 NASB95
No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
We’ll discuss this in a week or two
See John 5:18 - Best verse, IMO, to use with JW
John 5:18 NASB95
For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
See John 10:30
John 10:30 NASB95
“I and the Father are one.”
Not similar, not resembles, ONE

2) Creator (Creation)

1:3 - Jesus is Creator - John 1:1 and Genesis 1:1 along with Paul
Colossians 1:16 NASB95
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
First miracle of Christ?
How did He create? - spoke, the WORD
That very Word is what will judge, as in John 12:48
John 12:48 NASB95
“He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.
Start here when sharing Christ - get a feel for what people think about the Word
To embrace evolution is to deny Jesus as Creator, to deny God’s Word
No other way to interpret the Word, besides God/Jesus creating

3) Conflict-Resolver

This Gospel depicts a conflict
Light vs dark
Life vs death
Sin vs forgiveness
God vs ______________, well, never mind, God wins!
Life was sent to revive a dead world
LIFE = LIGHT
Light - not natural to humans - originated outside human realm
“Let there be light” - spoken into existence
Genesis 1:3 NASB95
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Darkness was not created - it is merely the absence of light
Darkness is confounded by light (surprised, startled) - see John 1:5
John 1:5 NASB95
The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Light disrupts, destroys darkness - the two cannot coexist
Great imagery, you cannot “shine” darkness, only light
Conflict is why the Logos came to earth
Light pierced the darkness
Light was not accepted, but not defeated (e.g. organ transplant)
John’s small group
Being squeezed by the world around them
Church is persecuted, leaders are being martyred
John is likely the last of the 12 alive at this point
RESPONSE? Make a powerful confession about Jesus, the Logos, the WORD
John is not necessarily presenting a choice
He’s not building up to a conclusion (Like the synoptics)
He starts with JESUS IS GOD
The cross had happened
The tomb is empty, still
Victory is secured
And now the prospect of victory is real, for believers
John’s gospel serves as witness to the Logos
The reader’s decision is absolutely and eternally crucial
YOUR decision - absolutely and eternally crucial
Romans 10:9 NASB95
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
The small group we call Cornerstone
Being squeezed by the world around us
Church is persecuted, antagonized
Wed: Anti-God groups have gone after bakers, florists, schools, leaders
They are coming for the church
What will you do about that?
I’ve confessed Jesus as Lord - SAVED
Now I have to stand up for the truth
Starting with JESUS is GOD
What will YOU do with the Gospel of John?
John would love for you to read it and embrace jesus
I would love for you to read it and embrace Jesus
The angels rejoice when a sinner is saved - they’d love for you to embrace what they know
Most important: God is pleased when you recognize Jesus for who Jesus is; John’s Gospel is not John’s Word, it’s God’s Word.
Love Him - Embrace it - Let God change you to be like Christ, the WORD
