End of the Beginning

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some doubted. 18 Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I’ve received all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.”

During the winter months I get to witness two vivid times of the day. The first is in the morning when I get to witness the majestic beauty of the sunrise. Many mornings when I would pull out onto Rt 30 I see the sun still hiding behind the mountains to the east. The sky gradually transitions from darkness to vibrant hues of pink, orange, and gold. It really is amazing to see.

The second is in the evenings as the sun begins to dip below the mountains to the west. The colors some evenings are really awe inspiring. The day has come to an end and Lord willing there will be another day tomorrow.

Beginnings evoke feelings of hope, opportunity, and starting over in a fresh way. They ignite a spark within us, reminding us that every new day, every new experience, and every new relationship contains the opportunity for growth, transformation, and the purpose of a mission.

When something comes to an end, it's natural to take some time for contemplation, closure, and introspection. They serve as a constant reminder of the passage of time and the significance of valuing each moment, as well as the connections and experiences we have had in our lives. When something comes to an end, it makes room for new beginnings to arise in its place.

Our passage for this morning illustrates the profound connection between the Great Commission and these ideas of beginnings and endings. The Great Commission signifies the transition from the earthly ministry that Jesus carried out to the ongoing mission that He entrusted to His followers. This mission is one that continues to this day, bringing light where there was darkness and ushering in the Kingdom of God. Just as the sunrise and sunset signal the transitions between day and night, the Great Commission indicates the transition from Jesus' earthly ministry to the mission that He entrusted to His disciples.

Jesus Authority

Matthew 28:18 “18 Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I’ve received all authority in heaven and on earth.”

When Jesus says, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me," he is referring to power, sovereignty, and the right to rule. The word "authority" encompasses all of these concepts. This demonstrates that Jesus rules supremely and completely over all of creation, including the spiritual realm (heaven) as well as the physical realm (earth).

The authority that Jesus holds covers numerous aspects, including the following:

Because Jesus is the Son of God, he holds God's inherent authority and shares in God the Father's divine nature. This gives Jesus divine authority. His divine identity is the source of His authority.

Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus displayed His power and authority over sin, death, and the forces of evil. This authority was revealed through the redemptive work that He did. He possesses the power to forgive sins, bring about reconciliation between God and humanity, and bring about redemption and salvation.

Jesus himself stated: Matthew 11:27

27 “My Father has handed all things over to me. No one knows the Son except the Father. And nobody knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wants to reveal him.

The authority that Jesus holds is universal, extending to each and every sphere and domain. It is superior to any and all forms of human authority, governmental structures, and spiritual powers. There is not one area or facet of existence that is outside of the purview of His absolute sovereignty.

Paul wrote about the power and authority of Jesus when he wrote Colossians 1:16-17

Colossians 1:16–17 CEB

16 Because all things were created by him: both in the heavens and on the earth, the things that are visible and the things that are invisible. Whether they are thrones or powers, or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him. 17 He existed before all things, and all things are held together in him.

The authority that Jesus possesses is not arbitrary or authoritarian; rather, it is founded on the perfect love, knowledge, and righteousness that He possesses. It is an authority that is marked by compassion and grace, as well as a yearning for the flourishing and restoration of creation. Recognizing and submitting to His authority as believers enables us to walk in accordance with His will, experience His guidance and provision, and participate in His work of redemption in the world.

Jesus authority that he is talking about has several implications for us today.

It gives the capacity for confidence and boldness in carrying out the Great Commission. As followers of Christ, we are given the commission to share the good news of the gospel, to make disciples, and to participate in the work of God to redeem the world. The realization that Jesus is at the center of all authority empowers us with the ability to take brave steps of faith, secure in the knowledge that we have the backing and support of the divine.

Putting our faith in His guidance and abundance. Recognizing the authority that Jesus holds over us compels us to rely on the guidance and direction that He provides. We are able to have faith that He will give us everything that is necessary for us to successfully complete the tasks that He has entrusted to us.

Surrendering our own power and recognizing His superiority over us as we surrender to His lordship. The authority that Jesus holds over us compels us to surrender control and to bring our lives into alignment with His divine plans. It demands humble submission, along with acknowledging that He is wiser than we are and understands what is best for our lives and the advancement of His kingdom.

Imagine an incredible nation that is ruled by a king who is both knowledgeable and kind. The subjects enjoy peace, a feeling of safety, and a sense of belonging as a result of his compassionate authority.

The King of this kingdom has the power to issue royal decrees, which give the king's devoted subjects the right to act on the king's behalf and carry out his will even when the king is not present.

Because they are aware of the authority that has been delegated to them, the subjects are able to step out into the world with self-assurance because they are aware that they carry the name and the weight of the king's authority.

In a similar manner, as followers of Christ, we have been given authority by the King over all kings. Jesus, the one and only true King, has given us the profound responsibility of sharing His message of love, hope, and salvation with a world that is desperately in need of it.

We are expected to honor and represent Jesus' authority in a faithful and obedient manner, reflecting His personality and expanding His kingdom on Earth, just as the committed subjects in the kingdom work to protect the reputation of their king and accomplish his desires. In the same way, we are asked to extend His kingdom on Earth.

Now that we have examined the remarkable authority that Jesus possesses, and understanding the extent of His reign as well as the significance of it, we are compelled to look at the purpose of this authority as well as the duty that comes along with it. The authority that Jesus possesses is not intended to be an abstract idea or a simple theological fact. It has an immediate and profound effect on the way we carry out the responsibilities of our faith and interact with the world that surrounds us. This brings us to the second point, which is the making of disciples.

Making Disciples

Jesus said there in the first part of verse 19 Matthew 28:19 “19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations,”

We hear this verse so much that we can become immune to the impact of it.

The spiritual path of discipleship is a never-ending process of growth and transformation:

Conversion takes place when a person initially accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This is the first step in the conversion process. Discipleship, on the other hand, goes beyond simple conversion and involves an ongoing process of conforming more and more to the image of Christ.

The process of becoming a disciple of Jesus involves continual learning, growth, and transformation into the likeness of Christ. It requires us to submit our life to His dominion and to constantly bring our ideas, attitudes, and deeds into conformity with the truths that He has given us.

The significance of establishing meaningful connections with others and teaching involves investing in others. The cultivation of discipleship requires the presence of deliberate interactions. It requires devoting time and effort to developing meaningful relationships with other people.

Teaching is an essential component of the discipleship process. It involves teaching others about the Bible, talking about spiritual matters, and guiding other people through their own personal faith journey.

To effectively disciple others, one must first make a personal investment in those individuals and then make a commitment to walk beside them as they follow Christ.

We must maintain a way of life that exemplifies the teachings of Christ by modeling His love, compassion, and a servant's heart toward one another in all of our dealings with other people.

You should make it a point to intentionally share personal testimonials of how Jesus has changed your life to illustrate the power and relevance of the Gospel.

We actively engage in the process of making disciples when we put effort into cultivating Christlike relationships, learn from others, and act in a way that reflects Christ's character. The goal of discipleship should not be limited to the dissemination of information; rather, it should be to model a manner of life that attracts people to Christ. We may walk alongside people on their path of faith by serving as mentors, participating in discipleship programs, and living our lives in a way that is centered on Christ. This will help them develop a deeper relationship with Jesus and become fully devoted followers of Christ.

Imagine a seasoned hiker who has trekked through treacherous terrains, conquered formidable mountains, and explored breathtaking landscapes. Their experience and knowledge are invaluable, and they possess a deep passion for sharing their adventures with others.

One day, they come across a group of aspiring hikers who are eager to embark on their own journey but lack the necessary skills, guidance, and understanding of the wilderness. Recognizing their need for guidance, the seasoned hiker willingly takes them under their wing, patiently teaching them navigation, survival skills, and the secrets of the trail.

Over time, these novice hikers grow in confidence and competence. They develop a deep connection with the seasoned hiker, learning not only practical skills but also gaining wisdom, resilience, and a love for the outdoors. As they journey together, the novice hikers are transformed into seasoned explorers themselves, ready to guide others on the same path.

In this illustration, the seasoned hiker represents a disciple-maker, someone who has walked closely with Jesus, experienced His transformative power, and gained knowledge of His ways. The aspiring hikers symbolize those who are seeking to know and follow Christ but lack the necessary understanding and spiritual maturity.

Through intentional discipleship, the seasoned hiker invests in the lives of the aspiring hikers, teaching them the ways of Jesus, sharing personal experiences, and providing guidance and support. The result is a multiplication effect, as the aspiring hikers, now transformed into seasoned explorers themselves, go on to disciple others, perpetuating the cycle of growth and transformation.

This illustration highlights the significance of discipleship as a journey of growth, learning, and transformation. Just as the seasoned hiker imparts their knowledge and passion for hiking, discipleship involves imparting the teachings of Jesus, nurturing spiritual growth, and equipping others to become disciple-makers themselves. It emphasizes the beauty and power of investing in intentional relationships, walking alongside others, and sharing life's challenges and triumphs in the pursuit of becoming more like Christ.

As we engage in the transformative work of making disciples, we witness the profound impact of walking alongside others on their journey of faith. Through intentional relationships, teaching, and modeling the ways of Christ, we have the privilege of seeing lives transformed and individuals becoming devoted followers of Jesus. In this process of discipleship, one of the significant milestones we encounter is the act of baptism. Baptism holds a unique and powerful place in the life of a believer, symbolizing their identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Let us now explore the Power of Baptism and the profound significance it carries in our spiritual journey.

Power of Baptism

Jesus said there in the later part of verse 19 Matthew 28:19 “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

Baptism is a powerful symbol of our identification with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. As we are immersed in water, we visually depict our union with Him and the transformation that takes place in our lives. Baptism represents the washing away of sins and the forgiveness we receive through faith in Jesus. It symbolizes the spiritual cleansing and newness of life that comes from surrendering to Him.

Paul wrote Romans 6:4

Romans 6:4 CEB

4 Therefore, we were buried together with him through baptism into his death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too can walk in newness of life.

Baptism marks the beginning of our new life in Christ. It signifies our spiritual rebirth, as we are born again by the power of the Holy Spirit. We become part of God's family and receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism signifies our intimate union with Jesus. We are united with Him in His death, where our old self and sins are crucified, and in His resurrection, where we experience newness of life. This union empowers us to live victoriously over sin and walk in the power of His resurrection.

Baptism is a communal celebration. Baptism is not just an individual act but a communal celebration. It signifies our incorporation into the body of Christ, the Church, and our unity with fellow believers.Public declaration: Baptism is a public proclamation of our faith in Jesus. It is a witness to others, declaring our commitment to follow Him and inviting others to join us on the journey.

The power of baptism lies not in the water itself, but in the spiritual reality it symbolizes. It represents our identification with Christ, the forgiveness of sins, and the new life we have in Him.

Baptism is a tangible and transformative moment in our faith journey, marking our spiritual rebirth, union with Christ, and incorporation into the community of believers.

Just as baptism marks the beginning of our journey as followers of Christ, His promise to be with us always empowers and sustains us as we navigate the ups and downs of life. Let us now delve into the Promise of Jesus' Presence and discover the profound impact it has on our lives as believers.

Promise of Jesus' Presence

Jesus said there in the last part of verse 20 Matthew 28:20 “Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.””

Jesus, in His great love and faithfulness, assures us of His continual presence. His promise is not limited to specific circumstances or seasons but extends to every moment of our lives.

The presence of Jesus is not merely a comforting thought or a theological concept. It is a reality that we can experience through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. He walks with us, guiding, comforting, and empowering us in every situation.

Imagine being in the midst of a dense forest on a dark night, feeling lost and unsure of the way forward. Suddenly, a guiding light appears, illuminating the path and providing a sense of direction and security. That guiding light represents the presence of Jesus in our lives. He is the light that leads us, dispelling darkness, and guiding us through life's challenges and uncertainties.

The Promise of Jesus' Presence is not a mere assurance; it is a reality that shapes our daily lives as believers. His presence brings strength, comfort, guidance, and empowerment.

Let us embrace this promise, being mindful of His presence in every aspect of our lives. May we find comfort, guidance, and strength in His abiding presence, and may it propel us forward in fulfilling our purpose, serving others, and living as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

As we approach the end of this another sermon and reflect on Jesus' authority, the invitation to make disciples, the power of baptism, and the promise of His presence, we are reminded of the enormous privilege and duty we have as Christ's followers. We stand at the "end of the beginning," ready to respond to the Great Commission and accomplish our destiny in the world.

Imagine being on the edge of a huge and gorgeous landscape, surrounded by innumerable people looking for hope, purpose, and salvation. You see a path in the distance that runs to every corner of the globe, inviting you to embark on the greatest adventure of your life—the adventure of completing the Great Commission.

The road ahead of you is not without difficulties. It necessitates sacrifice, perseverance, and moving beyond one's comfort zone. However, along the way, you will see lives transformed, broken hearts repaired, and the power of the Gospel reach the farthest corners of the world. You have received a holy commission to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We must prepare ourselves for this purpose in the same way that a climber prepares for a difficult climb or an athlete trains tirelessly for a competition. It begins with a heart dedicated to Jesus' authority, a heart devoted to being a disciple and making disciples. It necessitates a desire to invest in meaningful relationships, boldly express our faith, and live a Christ-centered life.

Let us not be content with simply warming the pews of our churches, but rather take a bold step forward, embracing the invitation to go and create disciples. Each of us has a distinct job to perform, whether in our families, communities, businesses or throughout the world. The collective impact we can have is immeasurable.

So, my friends, as we conclude today, I invite you to fully commit to the Great Commission. Allow Jesus' authority, baptism's power, and the promise of His presence to urge you forward. Let us be a community of believers who embrace this divine mission, going hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, making disciples, baptizing them, and sharing Jesus' life-changing message with the rest of the world.

May we be remembered as a people that carried out the Great Commission, leaving an indelible mark on the lives we touch. And as we embark on this trip together, remember Jesus' words: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
