Intro

Examples of God’s power:
biggest things you can think of?
smallest things you can think of?
most beautiful things you can think of?
craziest storms you can think of?
what is ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL THING you can think of?
WHO CAN TELL ME WHAT YOU LEARNED LAST WEEK?
Last week, Mr. Davidson taught us how we can know God
So, if God has revealed Himself to us, we ask the question: What do we know about God?
One thing that we know is...GOD IS ALL-POWERFUL.
Our memory verse for this week says this...
Psalm 147:5 ESV
5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
Define Abundant
having plenty of; existing or available in large quantities; plentiful
more than adequate quantity or supply
never a question of “if there’s enough”; there is more than enough
Define “beyond measure”
to a very great extent
Let’s think of some things that are in abundance/plentiful...
hair
sand
thanksgiving food
Let’s now think of things that are not in abundance, they run out...
gas in a car
money
other ideas?
Now, let’s think about God’s power
is it an abundance?
OR, will it run out?
GOD’S POWER IS IN ABUNDANCE, it won’t run out and it can’t be measured.
NOW, LET’S LOOK AT HOW GOD HAS REVEALED HIS POWER; HOW POWERFUL IS HE?
God created everything (WITH JUST HIS WORDS)
stars/planets
clouds/rain
grass/hills/mountains
animals
food
snow/ice/wind/water
PEOPLE
God sustains everything
Gives breath of life
Heals people
Provides food, clothing, shelter
Gives strength
God rules over everything
He punishes the wicked
He blesses the righteous
He gives commands
He establishes nations
Is there anything God cannot do?
He cannot sin
He cannot deny himself (contradict himself)
He will stay true to character
He will stay true to promises
He cannot change
in essence
God is holy
God is loving
God is just
God is all-powerful
HE WILL NEVER STOP BEING THOSE THINGS
in purposes
His purpose of His glory
His purpose of the good of His people
HE WILL NEVER GO BACK ON THOSE PURPOSES
in promises
Salvation
Promises to Israel
HE WILL NEVER BREAK A PROMISE
So. We know that God is all-powerful. What should we do with that knowledge?
When we study God’s Word, the things we learn should always lead to action...
We should praise Him
We should fear Him
We should hope in Him
Praise God (v. 1)
Psalm 147:1 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
Sing songs of praise to God
Pray prayer of praise to God
Share with others how great God is as you see his power on display
thunderstorms
mountains
2. Fear God
Psalm 147:10–11 ESV
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, 11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Stay humble
Are you all powerful? No, you’re weak
Are you sinful? yes
Can you pay for your sin? no
HOW CAN YOU PAY FOR YOUR SIN? HOW CAN YOU HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?
3. Hope in God
Psalm 147:10–11 ESV
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, 11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Remember the question I asked you at the beginning?
what is ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL THING you can think of?
Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, (paying for your sin, making a way for you to have a relationship with God).
Is God all powerful? Yes
Is God sinful? No
Can God pay for your sins? Yes!
If you say sorry to God for your sins, and trust in Him, He pays for your sins and you can have a relationship with the ALL-POWERFUL GOD!
Do you need God’s help to honor your parents?
Do you need God’s help to love your siblings?
Do you need God’s help to obey with a happy heart?
Pray and ask for help
Read the Bible so you can know how to do that the right way
Can God protect you from scary things?
Can God help you to do the right thing even when it’s hard?
Does God want you to ask Him for help?
Memory Verse: Psalm 147:5
Application Questions:
What is something that scares you? How does it make you feel to know that God is more powerful than the thing that scares you the most?
Who’s the most powerful person that you know personally? What makes them powerful? Why is God even more powerful than them?
What kind of things do we need God’s power for?
__________________________________________
What are some examples of God’s power? How should we respond to God when we see His power on display?
What is something that you will need God’s help with this week? How can you ask Him for help and how can you rely on His power instead of your own?
Read Psalm 147:10-11. Is God more pleased in people who are strong by themselves or people who are weak but rely on God? Why do you think that is?
Is there anything God cannot do? If so, why not? (For Leaders: emphasize that God cannot sin (1 Peter 2:22; 1 John 3:5), deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13), or change (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17) in his essence, purposes, or promises)
