1 Corinthians 15:33 (CSB) "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good morals.”
Talk bout some practical ways that can take this scripture and apply it to our friendship
1. Discernment and Boundaries: Exercise discernment when choosing your friends. You should be seeking friendships that are built on mutual respect, trust, and shared values. Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you, but also challenge you to grow in your faith. Develop friendships that help you become a better version of yourself without compromising your convictions.Maintaining healthy boundaries is crucial in any friendship, regardless of whether it is with believers or non-believers. Clearly define what you are comfortable with and what aligns with your values. Be willing to say no when necessary and stand firm in your convictions. Boundaries help preserve your faith, protect your values, and maintain the integrity of your relationship with God.
2. Lead by Example: Be a positive influence on your friends rather than being swayed by negative influences. Let your actions, words, and attitudes reflect the love and truth of Christ. Shine as a light in the darkness, showing others the transformative power of a life lived in accordance with God's principles. As followers of Jesus, it is important to be grounded in our identity. Understanding who we are in Christ provides us with a strong foundation, enabling us to form friendships without compromising our values. Embrace the truth that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, uniquely designed by God. When you know your worth in Christ, you will be less likely to seek validation or compromise your beliefs in search of acceptance. Jesus, in Matthew 5:13-16, encourages us to be salt and light in the world. As friends to those who are not believers, we have the opportunity to demonstrate the love and grace of Christ through our actions and attitudes. Let your friendships be a testimony of God's transformative power in your life. Seek to bring hope, joy, and peace to those around you, while remaining firmly grounded in your own faith
3. Maintain Accountability: Seek accountability from trusted mentors, leaders, or fellow believers who can help guide and support you in your friendships. They can provide guidance, offer advice, and hold you accountable to your faith. Regularly check in with them, sharing your concerns, challenges, and victories in your friendships.
4. Prayer and Seeking God's Guidance: Make prayer a cornerstone of your decision-making process. Seek God's guidance and wisdom when choosing friends and discerning the impact of your friendships. James 1:5, we are encouraged to ask God for wisdom: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Ask for strength and discernment to resist negative influences and to be a positive force in your relationships.
5. Share Your Faith: As a youth, embrace opportunities to share your faith with your friends. Through respectful conversations and genuine expressions of love, show them the hope and joy that comes from knowing Christ. Be prepared to answer their questions and concerns, always speaking with gentleness and respect. As followers of Christ, it is vital to be grounded in our identity. Understanding who we are in Christ provides us with a strong foundation, enabling us to form friendships without compromising our values. Embrace the truth that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, uniquely designed by God. When you know your worth, you will be less likely to seek validation or compromise your beliefs in search of acceptance.
6. Engage in Fellowship: Be an active participant in your church community and youth groups. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your faith and values. Engaging in fellowship with fellow believers provides support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.
7. Be Open to Friendship: While it is important to be discerning, don't isolate yourself solely to Christian circles. Be open to forming friendships with those who do not share your faith. This allows you to be a positive influence and share God's love with them. However, remember to maintain healthy boundaries and never compromise your faith in the process.
In all this Guard Your Heart: Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." When seeking friendships in the world, it is important to be aware of the influence they can have on us. While we should engage with the world, we must remain vigilant about the impact of our friendships on our character and faith. Surround yourself with friends who inspire and encourage you to grow closer to God, rather than those who pull you away from Him.
In all your interactions and choices, seek to honor God, glorify Him, and grow in your faith. Remember that with God's wisdom and guidance, you can navigate the complexities of friendships while remaining true to your beliefs and values.
