What Is Baptism?

The term baptism derives from the Greek for “to baptize” (βαπτίζω, baptizō)

The related word “washing” or “baptizing” (βαπτισμός, baptismos) refers to the act of dipping or immersing an object in water as part of a purification ritual.

Key Passages

Yochanan’s (John) Immersion

Matthew 28:18–20 TLV
And Yeshua came up to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Ruach ha-Kodesh, teaching them to observe all I have commanded you. And remember! I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
John 3:5–7 TLV
Yeshua answered, “Amen, amen I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be surprised that I said to you, ‘You all must be born from above.’
Nicodemus thought his physical lineage as one from Abraham was enough to qualify as born from above.
Yeshua is saying, one must be born publicly through the public delcartion of water imersion and the spirit through a changed life to be born or hold natural citizenship of the kingdom. This is why John makes a point of saying Nicodumeus came to him by night (a common narrative hint John uses).
This is why it says: John 3.20-21
John 3:20–21 TLV
For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so that their deeds will not be exposed. But whoever practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be made known that his deeds have been accomplished in God.”
John 4:1–2 TLV
Now Yeshua knew that the Pharisees heard that He was making and immersing more disciples than John. (Although Yeshua Himself was not immersing, His disciples were.)
We are immersed into the name, the school, the house of Yeshua.
It doesn’t have to be Yeshua doing the immersion for this to be the case.
Acts 2:38 TLV
Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be immersed in the name of Messiah Yeshua for the removal of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Ruach ha-Kodesh.
Acts 8:15–17 TLV
They came down and prayed for them to receive the Ruach ha-Kodesh. For He had not yet come upon them; they had only been immersed in the name of the Lord Yeshua. Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Ruach ha-Kodesh.

KMC Procedures

We recommend those being immersed consider fasting to mentally prepare and reflect upon the significance of the event.
