Prayer Psalm 32
Failed Bible translations… Professor who was working on a translation well can you give me an example:
“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?”
His disciples answered him, “Master, thou are the supreme eschatological manifestation of omnipotent ecclesiastical authority, the absolute, divine, sacerdotal monarch.”
And Jesus said, “What?”
Matthew 16:13-16 (Peter replied, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.)
Often we use terms that while true are not helpful, the most helpful terms we must understand and use are what we find in scripture. Terms like, Justification, grace, faith, salvation
Then with that understanding we then live it our in our actions, our mind, and our heart.
----Last Week we Saw that the answer to the question who can alleviate the penalty of my sin ----

We are justified by grace through faith in Christ!

Nothing other that merciful work of grace, only by faith, and only in Christ are we made righteous.
Righteousness and Justification the same (made right) - But it goes a step further and invites us into a God,
We then live in his righteousness and not our own. Paul makes this argument (set of statements that declare a truth)
Romans 4:1–5 CSB
What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about—but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness. Now to the one who works, pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed. But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness.
Abraham by faith not by works
Who was Abraham to Israel? “Father”
Gen 15:6 is quoted here in this passage.
Righteousness apart from work
Not a gift but as a wage as something owed, essentially demanding of the Lord to receive what we think he owes us.
There is an attempt to justify the self, which before God is not possible.
David celebrates when he quotes Psalm 32:1-2
Psalm 32:1–2 CSB
How joyful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How joyful is a person whom the Lord does not charge with iniquity and in whose spirit is no deceit!
What about Circumcision?
Was Faith credited before or After?
Gen 17:23-27 (Circumsicsion, Abe 99, Ishmael 13) Before Issac
Gen 16:16 (Abe 86, Ishamel born)
Gen 15:6 (Believed and Credited as righteousness) 84/85
Believed what the Lord said was true and trusted him
Circumcision is a Sign verse .11
Promise through Faith not law
Romans 4:13 CSB
For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
Inheritance is through faith, not the law
Romans 4:15 CSB
because the law produces wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression.
Faith no transgression
Romans 4:24–25 CSB
but also for us. It will be credited to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
If we live in the Law we will only find death
If we live in faith in Christ we find life

Faith

Faith must be personal first, then community is enjoyed once it is personal. Is not mystical, nor emotional- we often are surprised by the feeling and affections toward Christ when we first believe and we then spend rest of our lives trying to relive that moment. We are called to move upon that one moment
Hebrew - ba’heemin (to believe(trust), accept (knowledge))
Greek - pistis (trust(faith)) strong confidence / pistueo- (to believe (trust))
Faith in what - Word of God and Work of Christ on the Christ
Faith in whom- Christ

Faith involves the Whole Person

John Murray “Faith is knowledge passing into conviction, and it is conviction passing into confidence”
Mind - Thinking Element (Cognitive/Intellect) - Knowledge
Embraces Knowledge and recognition and understanding the person and work of Jesus
Not just know but believe, true faith is based on knowledge, a sure foundation.
(Yet facts alone are not enough, we can know an not believe or embrace the truth)
Heart - Emotional Element (Affective/Feeling) - Value
Assent - Settled confidence and affirmation that Christ’s salvation is sufficient.
Persuaded in the depth of the heart of the truth of Christ
2 Tim 1:12 Paul was convinced
Will- Choosing (Volitional/Action)
Trust - the personal commitment to and appropriation of Christ
Transfer the reliance of the self (both in spirit and person) to Christ

What then

1. Remember the just shall live by faith
2. We are part of the people of God
3. Faith shapes our lives
What do you understand?
Whats Clear
Whats Fuzzy
What affect does this I should this have?
On me
On my life
On my community
