1 KINGS Chapter 17
SLIDE 1 “1 KINGS CHAPTER 17”
Last week we came to Israel’s latest king......Ahab
Anything you remember from all that?
SLIDE 2
1 Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, “As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!”
SLIDE 3 “MAP OF GILEAD”
Samaria came from the Sidonians or founded by the Sidonians
Jezabel was a Sidonian
Sidonians came through Ham
Joseph was sold to caravan of Ishmaelites traveling thru Gilead
Was occupied by Rueben Gad and Mannaseh
SLIDE 4
12 “When we took possession of this land, I gave to the tribes of Reuben and Gad the territory beyond Aroer along the Arnon Gorge, plus half of the hill country of Gilead with its towns. 13 Then I gave the rest of Gilead and all of Bashan—Og’s former kingdom—to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (This entire Argob region of Bashan used to be known as the land of the Rephaites.
Jacob traveled from Haran and settled in Gilead
SLIDE 5 “MAP OF JACOB’S TRAVEL TO GILEAD”
SLIDE 6 “PHOTO OF GILEAD”
The area was well forested and fertile, producing grapes, olives, and fruit trees. The area was also known for its balm, an aromatic tree resin
Remember that Joseph was sold to Ismaelites traveling through Gilead.......check this out in Genesis 37 where that story happened
SLIDE 7
23 So when Joseph arrived, his brothers ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing. 24 Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
SLIDE 8
25 Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.
SLIDE 9
26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain by killing our brother? We’d have to cover up the crime. 27 Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother—our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed.
SLIDE 10
28 So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty pieces of silver. And the traders took him to Egypt.
Gilead had the balm of the tree resin
SLIDE 11
11 Go up to Gilead and obtain balm,
O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain have you multiplied remedies;
There is no healing for you.
This is what I love so much about God’s word is all the connections that prove His brilliance and sovereignty
So Kings 17 verse 1 God tells Elijah there will be no rain or dew until He gives word
Let’s read on
SLIDE 12
2 Then the Lord said to Elijah, 3 “Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River. 4 Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food.”
SLIDE 13
5 So Elijah did as the Lord told him and camped beside Kerith Brook, east of the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook.
The raven is the first bird mentioned in the bible in Gen 8 , Noah sent the raven first then the dove
SLIDE 14
7 But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land.
8 Then the Lord said to Elijah, 9 “Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. I have instructed a widow there to feed you.”
SLIDE 15 “MAP OF ELIJAH FROM CHERITH TO ZERAPHATH”
SLIDE 16 “THE BROOK OF CHERITH (KERITH)”
The brook may have dried up, but the Lord was showing Elijah to trust Him not the brook to supply his needs
SLIDE 17
10 So he went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the gates of the village, he saw a widow gathering sticks, and he asked her, “Would you please bring me a little water in a cup?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called to her, “Bring me a bite of bread, too.”
SLIDE 18
12 But she said, “I swear by the Lord your God that I don’t have a single piece of bread in the house. And I have only a handful of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jug. I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I will die.”
SLIDE 19 “ZERAPHATH PHOTO”
SLIDE 20
13 But Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid! Go ahead and do just what you’ve said, but make a little bread for me first. Then use what’s left to prepare a meal for yourself and your son.
SLIDE 21
14 “For thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, nor shall the jar of oil be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth.’ ”
We will find at start of chapter 18 it will 3 years with no rain
Any coincidence this is ending up at Zeraphath by the big ocean?
Zeraphath in Hebrew means “refining”
SLIDE 22
15 So she did as Elijah said, and she and Elijah and her family continued to eat for many days. 16 There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the containers, just as the Lord had promised through Elijah.
SLIDE 23
17 Some time later the woman’s son became sick. He grew worse and worse, and finally he died. 18 Then she said to Elijah, “O man of God, what have you done to me? Have you come here to point out my sins and kill my son?”
SLIDE 24
19 But Elijah replied, “Give me your son.” And he took the child’s body from her arms, carried him up the stairs to the room where he was staying, and laid the body on his bed. 20 Then Elijah cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, why have you brought tragedy to this widow who has opened her home to me, causing her son to die?”
What do you see in verse 19 that is interesting?
How about now in verse 20?
SLIDE 25
21 And he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, please let this child’s life return to him.” 22 The Lord heard Elijah’s prayer, and the life of the child returned, and he revived!
SLIDE 26
23 Then Elijah brought him down from the upper room and gave him to his mother. “Look!” he said. “Your son is alive!”
24 Then the woman told Elijah, “Now I know for sure that you are a man of God, and that the Lord truly speaks through you.”
Really cool chapter tonight wasn’t it?
Jesus spoke of this story in Luke and its in the Book of James also
Jesus as was in the synagogue of Nazareth stood up and read from the book of Isaiah “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me / He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor / proclaim release to the captives / recover sight to the blind / set free those who are oppressed / proclaim the favorable year of the Lord
He closed the book and all gazed at Him and couldn’t believe the gracious words falling from His lips
Jesus said today this prophecy has been fulfilled in your hearing
and then Jesus said this
SLIDE 27
24 And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.
25 “But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land;
26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
They were filled with rage and ran Him out of the synagogue and out of the city and wanted to throw Him off a cliff
He went to Galilee then and started teaching
Here’s what James says in chapter 5
SLIDE 28
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
SLIDE 29
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.
18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.
As we have seen in the last 5-6 chapters the nation fell into sin and idolatry.
God has always sent a prophet to announce God’s judgement and expose the sins
Thats what we have seen in Kings chapter 17
