Respecting Authority

Learning to love others starts in our home.

commandment 5 is a hinge, the home is the launching pad for human relationships

Parent / child relationship - primary = foundation

family - first school, first hospital, first government, first church

Honor = kaved

Lev. 20:9 ““ ‘If there is anyone who curses his father or his mother, he shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father and his mother—his blood is upon him.”

Deut. 21:18 ““If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not listen to the voice of his father and to the voice of his mother, and they discipline him, and he does not obey them,”

Father AND Mothers

This commandment is the first w/ a blessing

“live long in the land” in the Hebrew means “for the fullness of God’s blessing.” Having an abundant life.

Honoring dad and mom is the way our children learn to honor God. It is God’s plan for passing down the faith

What about those with sad memories of home?

The fifth commandment is about respecting authority in every relationship.

Delegated authoirty.

We should look to them with honor even when they don’t seem they deserve our respect. In honoring them we are giving honor to God who placed them in that place.

The authority placed in our hands by God is a special trust. We must never abuse others under our care. In the family - Yes, parents are to discipline, but that’s just one part. We are called to pray encourage, counsel, protect and provide for their needs.
