Ordination Service
As I come forward as last song ends
SLIDE 1 “WELCOME”
Words of encouragement in worship time
Words for communion
SLIDE 2 “COMMUNION”
Communion part of the service
Prayer
SLIDE 3 “BOWING AT CROSS”
Jesus travel in His ministry
Then Jesus headed up to Jerusalem
He was telling His disciples what was going to happen to Him
The Book of Matthew says James and John’s mother approaches and bows before Him and ask a question
Jesus says, “what do you wish?’
SLIDE 4
21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”
SLIDE 5 “ORDINATION SERVICE”
The Book of Mark says it was actually James and John that ask this question
Jesus responds and says, “you do not know what you are asking, are you able to drink from the cup I am about to drink?”
James and John answer, “we are able”
Jesus comes back with this
SLIDE 6
23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
And hearing this the ten became displeased with James and John
Jesus the amazing teacher He is called them all to Himself
SLIDE 7
25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
SLIDE 8
27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
SLIDE 9 “ORDINATION SERVICE”
Today we will ordain into service elder and deacons
Jesus giving this amazing command for His church
In how we things are different for those that follow Him, things are different in the body of Christ
How the world out there and how the human nature wants to lord over one another, to exercise authority over one another, to always look for an opportunity to be first......in line, to eat, to park, to be picked first for a team
Jesus says, “you know its not gonna be that way in my kingdom and church”
Paul explained it perfectly in the book of Romans
SLIDE 10
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
SLIDE 11
4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
and again in 1 Corinthians
SLIDE 12
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many.
We have just seen in God’s word the amazing design and operation of the church through the Spirit of God and in the Spirit of God
SLIDE 13 “BOWING AT CROSS”
For those that will be coming forward this morning, called to this service in the church a elders and deacons
We will be ordaining them in the Holy Spirit and the word of God to be supreme over their service over the other church ministries and church body
In the book of Acts......Paul, Peter and others found they could not preach, minister, pray, feed and do all the other functions needed for the church
Thus they chose and laid hands on those and committed them into service of the church
We will see 3 important points that Gods word assigns as a whole for His church
SLIDE 14
FUNCTION / MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH
*Servanthood- mark of the whole church
normative for the disciples of Christ
The NT presents servanthood in the sense of ministry or service as a mark of the whole church—that is, as normative for all disciples
SLIDE 15
FUNCTION / MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH
*Servanthood- mark of the whole church
normative for the disciples of Christ
*Jesus’s Teaching- equates ministry with feeding the hungry
welcoming strangers, cloth the naked
visit the sick and imprisoned
Jesus’ teaching on the final judgment equates ministry with feeding the hungry, welcoming strangers, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and imprisoned
SLIDE 16
FUNCTION / MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH
*Servanthood- mark of the whole church
normative for the disciples of Christ
*Jesus’s Teaching- equates ministry with feeding the hungry
welcoming strangers, cloth the naked
visit the sick and imprisoned
*Ministry of Christ Himself - compassionate care for individuals physical
and spiritual needs, giving of one’s self
The entire NT emphasizes compassionate care for individuals’ physical and spiritual needs as well as the giving of one’s self to meeting those needs. Such service is ultimately a ministry to Christ himself
Then Peter brings it all together how the function, ministry and government is to be according to the will of the Lord
SLIDE 17
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
SLIDE 18
3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
SLIDE 19
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
encourage in these scriptures
even women were called into the service as deacons in the church
SLIDE 20
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, 2 that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.
I would like to ask those called to elder and deacons to come forward
SLIDE 21 “BOWING AT THE CROSS”
Also the fellow elders and deacons to come and minister to them
Foot washing and scripture over the called to service
Prayer / Close
SLIDE 21 “I AM A SERVANT”
