Matthew 13:22“He also that received the seed among thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word and he becometh unfruitful.” (Matthew 13:22).Jesus gave the famous parable about the seed (Word of God) and the soil (heart of man), and is explaining it to the disciples. As a pastor I readily attest to the four kinds of soil in the parable. The good soil church people are few but every church has them. Our text is about the third kind of soil in the parable. It is a common soil frequently found in our church members’ hearts.FIRST—THE RECEPTION“He also that received the seed.” This person listened attentively and received the Word as it was preached. The problem in the four soils is not reception. They all received the Word. Christ is telling us what happens after they receive he Word and why it happens.SECOND—THE ROT“Among thorns.” The “thorns” means a corrupt heart for it shows corruption in the soil. These thorns were already in the ground where the seed was sown. The Soil was not clean soil but had corrupt seed (thorns) already in it.THIRD—THE REACTION“Care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches.” Two applications are made of the thorns.• Responsibilities. “Cares of this world.” All of us have many personal cares/responsibilities. They may be very legitimate. Family cares, job cares, health cares etc. are just a few “cares” that can become so distractive to the Word of God in our heart. “Seek ye first” (Matthew 6:33) that which pertains to the Lord and these cares will take care of themselves. But few have learned to apply Matthew 6:33 to their lives.• Riches. “Deceitfulness of riches.” Wealth hinders worship. Note it is the “deceitfulness” of riches. We think if we could just have a little more money we could solve a lot of problems. Not so. Money keeps from devotion to the Master and His Word.FOURTH—THE RUIN“Choke the Word.” That is a harsh statement but it is true. If we allow these thorns in our heart, they will make it impossible for us to enjoy the Word of God in our lives. They oppose the Word of God and when you want to eat it (study, learn) it will choke you so you will sputter, reject and refuse the teaching of the Word.FIFTH—THE RESULT“He becometh unfruitful.” This is the sad result. The person who has a corrupt heart (thorns) that oppose the Word of God will not be fruitful in his Christian life. Most church members belong in this sad and tragic category. They are so taken up with the world that the Word of God has little place in their heart so they are unfruitful spiritually.
