INTRODUCTION

Over the last two weeks we have been discussing how the Ascension of Jesus is linked to the outpouring of the HS.
Today, we transition and begin to discuss the importance of the Holy Spirit.
What I want to do today is read a couple texts -
Exegete a few more
and then finish with a story.
So let’s jump right into it!
-------------------------------------------------
John 16:7 NASB95
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
EXPLAIN WHY THIS SEEMS SO COUNTER INTUITIVE.
HOW MIGHT THE DISCIPLES FELT ABOUT THIS?
HOW WE OFTEN FEEL
IF ONLY I COULD TALK TO JESUS FACE TO FACE.
IF ONLY HE COULD BE PHYSICALLY HERE TO HELP ME BE A DISCIPLE.
AND THEN PAUL HITS US OVER THE HEAD WITH THIS TEXT!
1 Corinthians 6:17 NASB95
But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

THIS ONE VERSE SHOULD BE FREAKING YOU AND I OUT.

Paul is saying - To confess Jesus as Lord and to submit your life to Him as the Risen Lord is to be united with Jesus - Spirit to Spirit.

LET’S LET JESUS EXPLAIN SALVATION.

John 3:1–6 NASB95
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
So to be born of the Spirit is to be Spiritually joined to Jesus.
----------------------------------------------

WHAT DOES THAT PRACTICALLY MEAN? LETS BREAK IT DOWN!

HERE IS OUR QUESTION?
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ONE SPIRIT WITH JESUS?

PARTAKER IN HIS DIVINE NATURE.

2 Peter 1:3–4 NASB95
seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
If you are one Spirit with Jesus, you have everything you need for Life and godliness.
You are sharing in the same source of Life he Had.
And by being one Spirit with Jesus, you are becoming partakers in His Divine Nature.
-----------------------------------------

YOU HAVE BEEN JOINED TO JESUS THUS MAKING YOU SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF YAHWEH

Galatians 4:4–7 NASB95
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Jesus is the Son of God.
Being one in Spirit with the Lord makes you a son or daughter of Yahweh.
The Spirit of Jesus in His people confirms this crying out Abba Father.
There is a deep knowing Yahweh is your father
And a deep love to Yahweh as Father.
That is the Spirit of Jesus in us.
-------------------------------------

THE HOLY SPIRIT TRANSFORMS US AND PRODUCES HOLINESS IN AND THROUGH US.

Philippians 2:12–13 NASB95
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Galatians 5:22–26 NASB95
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SPIRIT WHOSE FIRST NAME IS HOLY!
How do we work out our salvation? We submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit in us.
When we submit to the Holy Spirit, He produces His character and nature in us.
It is as natural as an apple tree producing an apple.
-----------------------------------------------

THE SPIRIT OF GOD INTERCEDES FOR US, IN US AND THROUGH US.

Romans 8:26–28 NASB95
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
1 Corinthians 2:10–12 NASB95
For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,
How do we who have been born again know that all things will work together for our good?
Because the Spirit of God who knows the mind of God, intercedes for us, in us, and through us.
His intercession is perfect, as He prays God’s perfect will for us and through us.
My belief this groaning and moaning is a reference to what others call speaking in tongues
----------------------------------------------
I want to end with one more passage and a story that illustrates what we have in the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 4:7–10 NASB95
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
Gideon - 300 men
3 troops of 100
Horn, earthen pots, and a torch.
Judges 7:19–23 NASB95
So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and smashed the pitchers that were in their hands. When the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers, they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing, and cried, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” Each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran, crying out as they fled. When they blew 300 trumpets, the Lord set the sword of one against another even throughout the whole army; and the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the edge of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. The men of Israel were summoned from Naphtali and Asher and all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.
We are those earthen vessels
And the Spirit of Jesus is the treasure that has been placed in us.
We are broken in so many areas but it is through our old breaks that the Glory of the Lord shines through.
It is the Spirit of Jesus that causes the enemy be in confusion and to run.
----------------------------------------------
When Jesus ascended He poured out His Spirit on His people - He is still doing this today.
Each time a person is born again His Spirit joins them to Himself and Resides in them.
HIS SPIRIT JOINS US TO JESUS MAKING US ONE IN SPIRIT WITH THE LORD.
HE IS ALL WE NEED FOR LIFE AND GODLINESS - MAKING US PARTAKERS OF HIS DIVINE NATURE.
HIS SPIRIT JOINS US TO JESUS THE SON OF GOD MAKING US SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF GOD
THE HOLY SPIRIT TRANSFORMS US AND PRODUCES A HARVEST OF HOLINESS IN OUR LIVES.
THE HOLY SPIRIT SPIRIT WHO KNOWS THE MIND OF GOD INTERCEDES FOR US, IN US AND THROUGH US.
GUARANTEEING ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE WHO LOVE HIM AND ARE CALLED TO HIS PURPOSE.

GOD HAS PLACED A TREASURE IN US AS EARTHEN VESSELS - HIS HOLY SPIRIT HAS JOINED US TO JESUS OUR LORD.
