The Lamb is Just
John 2:13-25
INTRODUCTION
ILL- Couple married five years who bragged they never fought.
A year latter they were divorced.
Come to find out the reason they never had an argument was that they didn’t care enough.
Marriage Counseling: A good marriage isn’t about not fighting. It’s about fighting fair and learning to communicate.
What do you value?
You value what you spend money and time on.
You value what makes you upset.
Jesus had some values that motivated him.
Motivated his ministry and motivated him to the cross.
13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.
15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”
21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.
24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people
25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
4 Values That Matter to Jesus
4 Values That Matter to Jesus
1. Worship Matters (13)
1. Worship Matters (13)
13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Jesus was a worshiper
At 12 years old he is with his parents in the Temple.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
He was always in the Temple during the Passover and other holidays.
Daily Prayer-
16 But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.
12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.
35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
Jesus made sure others could worship.
6 “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
It was not about the sacrifice, it was about the heart.
Jews had made it about the religious act.
Outer courts- The Courts of the Gentiles-the place all people could come and worship. The sick and unclean, not just Gentiles, could worship in this area.
The purpose of the Temple was not to make money.
Sold the sacrifices to those who came from afar.
Had to be bought with special Temple currency.
Exchange rate was way to rob people.
Temple was a house of prayer.
17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”
This value takes him to the cross.
The desire to restore the relationship between man and God.
2. Justice Matters (14-17)

17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
This is not the picture of Jesus most of us want to see.
It's a picture of a righteous judge judging his people.
He was taking up for the down and out of society.
Righteous Anger
26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Love and judgment have to go together. One without the other is heresy.
If you claim you love someone but do not passionately want what is best for them, what kind of love do you really have?
"I love you but you can stick your finger in the electrical outlet."
"I love you but you can live a destructive life."
Meekness
Meekness is power under control.
meekness is a word used to describe the most disciplined of war horses.
Spineless love is not love.
Jesus cared deeply and was willing to fight if necessary because he cared.
It drives him to the cross.
Being willing to suffer for your faith is not a sign of weakness- it is meekness.
John Cao- in prison in China for illegally crossing Christians from China to Myanmar where they were building schools in the mountains. He also ran an underground seminary.
He is not weak- He is strong- he used his strength for good.
Jesus has power-
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Yet he also died for us.
Jesus' eyes are like fire- burn or warm. Depends on whether we are forgiven.
The cross satisfied the wrath of God.
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
3. Sacrifice Matters (18-22)

18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
vs 18- literally- What gives you the right to do this?
Answer- I am going to die and then be raised from the dead. I have the right.
Crucifixion is the greatest act of love. It is his proof that shows why he deserves to be judge.
He has power over death and offers life to those who are willing to believe.
His sacrifice is greater because he will come back to life.
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
He offers it to all... no matter race, social level, or cleanliness.
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
4. Heart Matters (23-25)

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.
24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people
25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
Jesus does not believe their believing.
These same people would be yelling "crucify him."
They were enthralled by his miracles, not the same as believing he is the Lamb of God who comes to take away the sins of the world.
Jesus knew their hearts.
We have all experienced people who announce their allegiance and prove to not be very dependable.
It was this sin that he came to save.
This is why he says, (Matthew 7:21-23
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’
23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
CONCLUSION
All these are important because Jesus values us.
You were valuable enough to die for.
He made the way for you to have salvation.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Jesus values you! Will you accept his love?
