Why Do You Do What You Do?

I see it as there are 2 different types of People in this world, well I know there is more, but for right know there are 2
How do you wake up?
hit the snooze button
wake up at the first alarm, or even before
How are you when you go out to eat
Order healthy
get that sweet sweet chocolate cake and burger
Manage money
spend wisely
buy the lated Star Wars Collectible, I mean unwisely?
There are some secondary reasons we do what we do
We feel Obligated
I have to do it
God expects me
Parents expect me
Job expects me
We Want to
We care about it
discipline
we want the outcome
We want to be accepted

What Compels You to Do What You Do?

You Do What you do because of what you think of you
Proverbs 23:7a (NKJV)
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
In Craig Groeschel’s book He talks about 3 questions that we subconsciously ask our ourselves when we face a situation
What type of person am I?
What kind of situation is this
What would a person like me do in a situation like this?
You are taking a test online and you know that you could google the question that you don’t know
You are tempted to grab something that is not your
Or you are tempted to make someone look bad by gossiping about them
or you want to give to others out of your blessings
Someone hurts you and you choose to forgive them
Back to the examples we talked about a few minutes ago
Snooze button
food
money
I was with some friends waiting for the kids to get hurt
If you want to change what you do, Change what you think of you
Many of us its easier to believe the negative than the positive
Why to you often believe bad things about yourself
The Devil is a liar, He has been laying to you since the day you were born
John 8:44–45 NIV
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
You are so used to hearing lies
What you aren’t
How you can’t
it’s easier to believe the lies
But Jesus’ truth will set you free
Years ago I went through a hard time, I was going through a bout of depression, I was acting like a good husband or father. I was short and unavailable.
I felt like I was a bad husband, a bad father, I felt like my family deserved so much better.
I didn’t think of myself as a person that was going through a hard time, but a horrible person
When you do something that you are not proud of
The Devil doesn’t tell you that you Did something bad
The devil attacks your identity He says you ARE bad
The Devil makes you believe that
You can’t change
Thats Just the way you are!
Your distorted identity starts to sabotage your success
You hear the lies and tend to continue down that path
You struggled with addiction, so you hear the lie that is who you are
so you hit the bottle
click on that site
do that drug
You Struggle with money, you hear the lie that is who you are
You go to the store just to shop
you go to amazon
You struggle with trust, you hear the lie that is who you are
you keep everyone at arms length
you avoid letting people in
Your distorted identity creates destructive habits
your destructive habits reinforce your distorted identity
But who does God say you are

You Are A Child Of God

John 1:12 NIV
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

You Are A Friend of Jesus

John 15:15 NIV
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

You Have Been Accepted By Christ

Romans 15:7 NIV
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

You Have Been Set Free

Galatians 5:1 NIV
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
lets focus on who you want to become
I want to be a fully present parent
I want to be a person of God who will serve my spouse and kids
I want to be a fully devoted man/woman of God
Get really specific
· I am a Christian who reads my Bible every day.
· I am a person who puts God first in my finances.
· I am disciplined. X in me stronger than wrong desires in me.
“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.” James Clear
For example, I am a Christian Who Reads My Bible Everyday
Every time you do it is a small vote that reinforces your new identity.
The Devil will tell you that you cannot change, and that is just who you are but God says something different
Ephesians 4:21–24 NLT
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
Do not listen to the lies
I was once told this
the lies always come in whispers in our minds, but if we repeat the lies out loud it is easier to discern what is true from what is a lie
Karen, I am tired and don’t feel like going out tonight
What the lie that is in my head, I don’t want to be around you and there is something wrong with our relationship
Repeat the lie out loud
Tell the truth, She is a great wife and loves me, she does so much that it is understandable that is tired.
Do not let the devil define you, it is a lie, find your identity in Christ that is based in truth
