1 Timothy 3:1-7

Introduction:
My brothers and sisters, I’ve had many jobs. I have worked with Chuck E cheese my fist Job. I left there and worked at Golden Corral, I have worked at Toy’s are us when they were open, First Job out of college worked at APD agency for persons with disabilities, worked with DCF, worked as a family Coordinator at Family resources.
Someone may Why is he naming all his jobs, I said to say that there is a difference between a Job and a calling, A job you can you can turn in a two weeks notice, However, when your called you can not turn in a two weeks notice, The only Exit interview we have when your called is with God. On a Job when you get tired you can call in. However, When your called sometimes you have to go when you dont feel like it. On a job when you feel like your season may have expired you can find another one. But when you called you have to be instant in season and out of season.
Context
1s Timothy is considered One of the Pastoral Epistles,
Which means in these epistles Paul was writing in particular to pastors It was mentioned to be written in Rome
-It was assigned that Paul was on his third missionary journey
Paul in particular wrote 3 Pastoral epistles 1 to Titus and 2 to Timothy the Epistle to Titus and the First Epistle to Timothy go together, and the Second Epistle to Timothy stands alone.
Paul, having left Titus in the temporary oversight of the Churches of Crete, and Timothy in that of the Church of Ephesus, writes plain practical instructions to both of them how to order and rule the Churches committed to them.
He speaks on the conduct of the public prayers, the qualifications of the clergy, the discipline of the Church societies, the example to be set to the Christian communities by the chief pastor, together with earnest warnings in regard to growing heresies, make up the bulk of both Epistles, supplemented by a few directions peculiar to each case.
Based on this passage, it emphasizes the importance of
1st Timothy 3
1-If one desires this office first Paul makes it clear that it is a good work to desire..
Meaning that it is honorable
Without Reproach
Blameless
1 wife definition-
1 Timothy 3:2 (1 Timothy): requiring a bishop, (or presbyter) to have a wife, and so some took it even in Chrysostom’s time (though he does not so understand it), and so the Russian Church understands it; (2) as prohibiting his having more than one wife at a time; (3) as prohibiting second marriage for priests and bishops
To be sober
"Perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you." (Doctrine and Covenants 6:35)Generally when we think of the word "sober," we simply think not drunk. It turns out that is an important definition of sober, but the word has a much deeper meaning as it is used in the scriptures. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, soberness is characterized by the absence of excess or indulgence.A sober person is grave, serious, solemn, having or implying a serious mind or purpose. A sober person is also quiet or sedate in demeanor, dignified or discreet in deportment and of a serious character. A sober person shows no trace of haste or impatience and is free from harshness and violence and is of a moderate disposition, not readily excited or carried away. A sober person is one who has calm and dispassionate judgment and is not desirous of great things or high estate but is free from extravagance or excess. Such a person is guided by sound reason and is sane and rational. Interestingly, sober is also connected to fasting.Soberness is used a number of times
Soberness is sometimes used not simply to describe how we are in ourselves, but how we interact with others. For example, Paul teaches "every man not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith" (Romans 12:3).Another common use of the word sober is in how the Lord's servants, leaders, should regard their callings..In these last days, we have been commanded to "gird up your loins and be watchful and be sober, looking forth to the coming of the Son of Man, for he cometh in an hour you think not" (D&C 61:38; see 1 Peter 4:7).
Titus 1:7
It’s important that a church leader, responsible for the affairs in God’s house, be looked up to—not pushy, not short-tempered, not a drunk, not a bully, not money-hungry.
He tells him in 2nd Timothy 2:15 to study to shew thyself approved unto God a workman that needed not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth…
I’ve learned that with so many distractions we have to find time to meditate and focus on the word of God..
Psalms 1:1-2 David said Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked. Nor stand in the way of sinners nor sits in the seat of scoffers: but his delight is in the laws of the Lord and on his as he meditates both day and night……
We have to learn how to mange our study time.. I’ve learned that it seems as though as soon as I want to study that’s when an emergency or situation comes up.
1 Timothy 3:1–7 (MBC): Reputation is literally “testimony.” It is not enough for a church leader to be well thought of by those within the assembly. Unlike the previous verse, which pointed to Satan as a cautionary example, the snare of the devil refers to a trap laid by the devil for the leader, as the devil tempts him to become proud about his position of importance in the church. God is opposed to those who are proud (Jms 4:6), and people will not hold them in high regard (Jms 4:10).
Character,
When I was growing up playing ball they had a saying that says “Talent is overrated but Character wins out.” In reference what they were saying is that eventually your true self is going to show. I’ve learned that it is okay to work on your exegetical presentation, It’s okay to have your exegesis, and eisegesis. However, it is much better to work on your who you are as a person. It’s wonderful to be homiletical sound. However, it is equally important to improve and develop your character. Because at the end of they day. I must say that often times people will pay attention to what they see rather than what you say.
Martin Luther King Jr. said it when he said “we judge a man by the content of their character:”
What determines character”
1. Attitude
The attitude of people with omnipotent personalities reveals that they have a great sense of pride and may also be smug and self-righteously complacent. People with impotent personalities display arrogant attitudes and may show outrage when questioned.
2. Personal Standard
I’ve learned that there is a difference between others standard for you and the personal standard you set for yourself. When you have a personal standard you can discern when and who is benefiting
4. Value System
People with omnipotent personalities may put themselves down and have inflated regard for people demonstrating few real attributes or accomplishments. Impotent personalities value themselves highly and place a lower value on others.
5. Self-Esteem
Omnipotents’ self-esteem may suffer in spite of a fierce work ethic and their own stellar achievements. Impotent personalities show high and even inflated self-worth and esteem, even when they have few real accomplishments.
6. Commitment To Others
Omnipotent personalities are steadfast and display a way of committing to others that is so loyal and dedicated that commitments endure even when relationships become “dead.” Impotent personalities commit conditionally. Based on changing whims, they will end relationships over any slight disappointment.
integrity,
leadership qualities in those who aspire to be overseers or bishops. They should exhibit
moral uprightness,
faithfulness,
self-control,
and a good reputation. I
t is also essential for them to
be skilled in teaching,
hospitable, and
capable of
managing their own families well.
These qualifications are intended to ensure that overseers can effectively lead and care for God's church while avoiding pitfalls that may compromise their role.
Closing:My brothers and sisters Although Paul was writing to Timothy, I believe at this message applies to all of us.
I would like to suggest to you today that Although their are some differences between a job and a call one of the other similarities that I would say is the same is that when you called you have some benefits.
their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
