Last week we talked about God’s creation. We see how God created and then he rested, he brought order out of chaos. We are called to rest as well and when we truly know our creator and are connected to our savior, that is how we find rest in the midst of this life we live.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot and all the possessions that they had gathered and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran, and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on by stages toward the Negeb.
How are we to be the church? What is our calling?
God’s summoning of individuals and people to himself, so that they will belong to him and serve him in his world. The calling of a believer may involve a specific place, task or vocation in life.
God calls individuals to belong to him and serve him

trust God to be taken out of your comfort zone

As believers, we are set apart and are called to obey, even when we are comfortable, God doesn't want us to settle, but to trust in His promises.
this act of faith and blessing allowed for a people to be set apart and to recognize the coming of Jesus
go when called. trust and obey. don't settle.
We are called to go out of our comfort zones and God will be with us. We are to be faithful and obedient, trusting in the promises. This passage is foundational. It begins the journey of blessing and set apartness.

The old relationships and attachments were too strong, too sensibly real for Abram to retain them and at the same time develop the capacity to receive God’s message. It was only as God drew him apart for Himself, made him dependent upon Him alone for fellowship, guidance, comfort, and strength, that He would be able to make of him the man He needed.

But for all that God demanded of Abram, He devoted most of His words to promises as to what He would do for Abram

He is not only to be blessed and to be the means of blessing, but he is actively to seek to be a blessing

In a similar way Jesus called his disciples to ‘leave their nets’ and follow him (Mk. 1:17–18). There is a sense in which every believer has to abandon the past, make an about turn and start afresh in the service of Jesus. This may not entail a literal journey, and circumstances may remain just as they were before, but nevertheless to forsake all in order to serve the Lord is as decisive a step as was Abram’s move from Haran, and as full of potential for good

God still could have told Abram where he was to go. But perhaps God thought the best way for Abram’s faith to grow was in the dark. Often, the more we know, the less we trust. It is never easy to surrender the known in order to embrace the unknown. Abram needed most to learn to trust God. In the words of Hamilton, Abram “does not have, in terms of personal realization, all the promises of God. But he does have the God of all the promises.” That was all he needed.

abram left a place where he was comfortable and well established. to go to a new land! he built an altar to honor God immediately

no known author - maybe Moses, original audience was Israelites to encourage and teach about their heritage and calling. This passage is foundational because we see the blessing of the offspring of which Jesus will be from
God calls us to be faithful and obedient. The blessing is in the action of obedience.
great nation doesn't mean what we americans think. Great meant pertaining to the nation of Israel. Shechem - built an altar here that would stand for events to come. Bethel means light - luz - ancient city. this passage is one of blessing, faithfulness and obedience. Abram went as was told. no excuses - life was good - still he went.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.
