Main Point: Jesus healed those who acted in faith.
3 characteristics of faith that Jesus responds to
Jesus responds to humble faith.
Matthew 9:18–19 ESV
18 While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.
Matthew 9:23–25 ESV
23 And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
Ruler = important leader in Jewish synagogue
Many rules lacked faith
Jesus = “dangerous heretic”
The expectation: any source other than Jesus
This ruler was different
Perhaps heart softened out of desperation?
Physically bowed
Respect & worship
bowed his heart
Daughter restored because of faith
Ask: Why is it important to humbly approach Jesus?
Giving Him the respect He deserves
In His rightly place > humble faith
Ask: Jesus did the impossible: He raised a dead girl to life. How does this encourage your faith?
Luke 1:37: Nothing is impossible for God
But we hold on as if they are too much for Him
Our faith should be encouraged
Bring Him anything
Authority to do all things
Jesus responds to humble faith.
Jesus responds to bold faith
Matthew 9:20–22 ESV
20 And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
Woman viewed as “unclean”
Could not go to temple; participate in Jewish living
No social life
Crowd, yet alone
She is desperate
Jesus = a certain source of healing
Pressed her way to Jesus
Jesus sees her
Ask: How does Jesus’s reaction to this “unclean” woman encourage you?
Jesus doesn’t shy away from our sickness or our issues
Even if outcasts, heals us when we approach Him
Ask: Why does it matter that our God is approachable?
He’s never far
Shows us how He feels
Fills our need
He never turns us away
Jesus responds to humble faith.
Jesus responds to bold faith
Jesus responds to desperate faith
Matthew 9:27–31 ESV
27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
Blindness even more difficult back then
Jesus responds to desperation
Faith is the key
Ask: What does it mean to ask for mercy?
Relief
Help
Not giving us what we deserve
Ask: How can we sometimes suffer from spiritual blindness?
All of us at some point
Faith = complete trust in who God is.
Eyes opened to need > respond in faith
Christ Connection
Jesus responded to those who came to Him in faith for physical healing. In a greater way, all who come to Jesus in faith for salvation from sin are forgiven and restored with God.
Head: How can believing God is approachable change your relationship with Him?
