Things we should take off...
Things that we should put on…
What, is one thing that stood out in your mind from Sunday’s message?
(wait)
Things we should take off… (5-10)
Colossians 3:5–10 ESV
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
Then Paul tell them these are the things they should put on...
Colossians n (12-13)
Colossians 3:12–14 (ESV)
Colossians 3:12–14 ESV
12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
So you know what we should take off and you know what we should put on, but my question for yo tonight is .....why?
Why take off the anger? Why stay aware from those sexual things until you marry the one that God has given you? Why should we not allow anger, slander, and obscene talk to come from out mouths?
Why?
(wait)
We have talked about that we should be a witness because the world is watching…but we need to go deeper than that. There is a deeper reason we should put off these old things and put on these new things.
Look at verse 1...
Colossians 3:1–4 ESV
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Verse 3:
Colossians 3:3 ESV
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
What does it mean to be hidden in Christ with God?
(wait)
I have heard that to be hidden in Christ with God has 3 different meanings...
First, look at what it says....YOU DIED
Died, means it has already happened. It’s in the past. So this is pointing to those people who have turned away from themselves and turned to God. Those you have given their life to God through Jesus Christ. They have died to this world....this life…and now our new life is somewhere wlse… IN CHRIST.
But it says we are Hidden in Christ.
What does it mean to hide?
(wait)
To remove yourself from the open and move into a place surrounded by something.
For the Christian, we have removed ourself from the world, and we hide in the arms of Jesus.
Not hiding like never to be seen, but we place ourselves, our lives, in him, and not in teh arms of the world.
Hidden In Christ
because we died to this life, we have connection with God that only a follower of Jesus Christ can have. (1 Corinthians 6:17)
1 Corinthians 6:17 ESV
17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
Hidden In Christ
2. the world (unbelievers) cannot fully understand what it means to have a new life in Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:14)
1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
3. as a believer, heaven is waiting, and we have power to defeat the Devil by the Word and spirit of God. (John 10:18)
John 10:18 ESV
18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
Romans 8:31–39 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
If you believe, you are hidden in Christ, but you need to be displayed to the world.
What are the challenges you may have showing a life that hidden in Christ? Challenges you have living as an advert for Jesus?
(wait)
What are some ways you can face these challenges as a Man or Woman of God?
(wait)
Remember....
Colossians 3:17 ESV
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
