What is Revelation?

Revelation means - ‘unveiling’
The unveiling of truth regarding God
Hence the book of Revelation is the unveiling of what is yet to come.
Revelation is the divine act of God, “making Himself known to man”

Two Kinds of Revelation

General Revelation
Special Revelation

General Revelation

AKA - “Natural” revelation
The truth of God passed to man in general
General revelation involves all people
Matthew 5:45 KJV 1900
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Acts 14:17 KJV 1900
17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
It is universally known Psalm 19:2
Psalm 19:2 KJV 1900
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night sheweth knowledge.
It is discerned in nature Romans 1:20
Romans 1:20 KJV 1900
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
It is made known in the mind of man Romans 2:14-15
Romans 2:14–15 KJV 1900
14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
General revelation takes away man’s excuses
By general revelation men can known of:
God’s existence and power in creation Psalm 19:1, as well as his intelligence and personality, and control.
Psalm 19:1 KJV 1900
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Romans 1:19–20 KJV 1900
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

What is General Revelation Good For?

GR is insufficient to save anyone.
GR - is sufficient to bring light or knowledge of God so that, if it is accepted, it will lead to more revelation of God
GR is enough to render the heathen inexcusable for his sin and condemn him if he rejects such revelation of God. (Romans 1:20 again points this out).
When I worked at KFI, a man I worked with would occasionally ask me (accuse God of being unloving) how God could justify sending someone to hell who had never heard the gospel. I would remind him that everyone of us, including him, were without excuse before a holy God.

Special Revelation

Special Revelation is the truth of God communicated in His Word and through several avenues as recorded in His Word.
In other words…the Bible is special revelation.

2 Timothy 3:15–17 KJV 1900
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
It is Powerful, in that it addresses man’s sin and need of a Savior John 20:31
John 20:31 KJV 1900
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

The Urim and Thummin
Exodus 28:30 KJV 1900

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. The Bible
Reveals God’s person, works, and plan for man’s salvation

The Purpose of Special Revelation

Special revelation is needed for men to be saved.
It is only by the Word of God that men can know the love and grace of God in the person of Christ and by knowing this exercise faith in Him (Romans 10:17
Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Special revelation is therefore, “Soteriological”

Take Away

How did we receiver our Bible? Step one is through special revelation. Step two is “Inspiration”, which we will discuss after VBS.
For tonight know that this book we hold dear is special because it reveals to us the nature, love, grace, and plan of God for all ages. It reveals to us our need, and God’s sufficiency to meet that need. It confronts us with our weaknesses to demonstrate God’s strength, and it offers the only light in this dark world we live in.
If you take nothing else away from tonight’s study, take away the truth that you can trust this Book!
