Where is hope? How do we process our own trials?

Revelation 2:8.
Revelation 2:8 ESV
8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.
Church in Smyrna
It is modern day Izmir.
A wealthy port city north of Ephesus devoted to the emperors as gods.
The Book of Revelation Christ Commends the Church of Smyrna for Enduring Tribulation and Encourages It to Continue to Be Faithful in Anticipation of Imminent, More Severe Persecution, in Order to Inherit Eternal Life and Heavenly Kingship (2:8–11)

the imperial cult permeated virtually every aspect of city and often even village life in Asia Minor, so that individuals could aspire to economic prosperity and greater social standing only by participating to some degree in the Roman cult. Citizens of both upper and lower classes were required by local law to sacrifice to the emperor on various special occasions, and sometimes even visitors and foreigners were invited to do so

Polycarp, the pastor at Smyrna - This account is written 75 years after Revelation was written.

1 Upon Polycarp’s entrance into the arena there came a voice from heaven, ‘Be brave, Polycarp, and act like a man.’ No one saw the speaker, but our people who were present heard the voice. 2 Finally, when he was brought forward, the Proconsul asked him if he were Polycarp; when he admitted it, he tried to persuade him to a denial of the faith, saying: ‘Have regard for your age,’ and other suggestions such as they usually make: ‘Swear by the genius of Caesar; change your mind and say, “Away with the atheists!” ’ Then Polycarp, with solemn countenance, gazed on the whole crowd of lawless pagans in the stadium, waved his hand at them, groaned, looked up to heaven, and said: ‘Away with the atheists!’ 3 As the Proconsul urged him and said: ‘Take the oath and I release you; revile Christ,’ Polycarp said: ‘Eighty-six p 156 years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who has saved me?’

So he put his hands behind his back and was bound like a ram marked for sacrifice out of a great flock, a holocaust prepared and acceptable to God. As he looked up to heaven, he said: ‘Lord God Almighty, Father of Thy beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have received knowledge of Thee, God of the angels and powers, of the whole creation and of the whole race of the righteous who live in Thy sight, 2 I bless Thee, for having made me worthy of this day and hour; I bless Thee, because I may have a part, along with the martyrs, in the chalice of Thy Christ, “unto resurrection in eternal life.” ’ resurrection both of soul and body in the incorruptibility of the Holy Spirit. May I be received today as a rich and acceptable sacrifice, among those who are in Thy presence, as Thou hast prepared and foretold and fulfilled, God who art faithful and true. For this and for all benefits I praise Thee, I bless Thee, I glorify Thee, through the eternal and heavenly Hight Priest, Jesus Christ, Thy beloved Son, through whom be to Thee with Him and the Holy Spirit glory, now and for all the ages to come. Amen.’

Revelation 2:8b.
Who’s words are they? Jesus words, spoken by the Spirit.
Jesus, the First and the Last - He is “Yaweh Embodied”. There is nothing beyond him - no trial or poverty, nothing.
Jesus died and came to life - Resurrection Power - Romans 8:11.
Romans 8:11 ESV
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
I can walk Down this dark and painful road I can face Every fear of the unknown I can hear All God's children singing out We will not be overtaken We will not be overcome
The same power that rose Jesus from the grave The same power that commands the dead to wake Lives in us, lives in us The same power that moves mountains when He speaks The same power that can calm a raging sea Lives in us, lives in us He lives in us, lives in us - Jeremy Camp
Revelation 2:9.
Revelation 2:9 ESV
9 “ ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
Jesus knows you!
He knows your affliction.
He knows your poverty.
He’s made you rich in faith. James 2:5.
James 2:5 ESV
5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
He knows you’ve been slandered.
The Jews are slandering Jewish and Gentile Christians.

About AD 90 the curse of the Minim was introduced into the ‘Eighteen Benedictions’. This provided a means of detecting Christians in the synagogues. The pressure of the emperor-cult explains why they sought acceptance there

‘May the Nazarenes and the Minim suddenly perish, and may they be blotted out of the book of Life [sic] and not enrolled along with the righteous’.

When one slanders, he or she aligns with Satan.
Revelation 2:10.
Revelation 2:10 ESV
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Do not fear suffering. Matthew 10:24-31.
Matthew 10:24–31 ESV
24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Trials test faith, which brings maturity - James 1:1-4.
James 1:1–4 ESV
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Why ten days of tribulation?
Genesis 24:55.
Genesis 24:55 ESV
55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.”
Daniel 1:12,14.
Daniel 1:12 ESV
12 “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.
Daniel 1:14.
Daniel 1:14 ESV
14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.
Ten is probably symbolizing a brief period of time. Trials are not forever!
Faithful unto death. 1 Corinthians 10:13; Hebrews 11
1 Corinthians 10:13 NET
13 No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.
Receive the crown of life - James 1:12.
James 1:12 ESV
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
What is the crown of life? In simple terms, it is resurrection to life.
Does the Fear of God have anything to do with it?
Proverbs 9:10.
Proverbs 9:10 ESV
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Sirach 1:11.
Sirach 1:11 ERV
11 The fear of the Lord is glory, and exultation, And gladness, and a crown of rejoicing.
Sirach 1:18.
Sirach 1:18 ERV
18 The fear of the Lord is the crown of wisdom, Making peace and perfect health to flourish.
Do not fear man, but fear God.
The fear of God is terror for the lost, reverence and awe full of love for the saved, a crown of life. 1 John 4:15-19.
1 John 4:15–19 ESV
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.
Revelation 2:11 ESV
11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’
Hear Jesus’ words spoken by the Spirit.
We are more than conquers in God’s love.
Romans 8:35-37.
Romans 8:35–37 ESV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
The second death is condemnation to Gehenna / the Lake of Fire. Matthew 10:28; Revelation 20:6, 14; 21:8.
Where is hope?
How do we process our trials?
We find hope in Jesus processing our trials with him.
Jesus knows you!
He knows your affliction.
He knows your poverty.
He knows you’ve been slandered.
He is working in it all.
Fear Him for it is brings the crown of life. Resurrection Power!
