He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites-all their sins-and put them on the goat's head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert. The Day of Atonement
1 The LORD spoke to Moses…
3 "This is how Aaron is to enter the sanctuary area:
with a young bull for a sin offering
and a ram for a burnt offering.
6 "Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering
to make atonement for himself and his household.
7 Then he is to take the two goats
and present them before the LORD
at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
8 He is to cast lots for the two goats –
one lot for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat.
9 Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the LORD
and sacrifice it for a sin offering.
10 But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat
shall be presented alive before the LORD
to be used for making atonement
by sending it into the desert as a scapegoat.
18 "Then he (Aaron) shall come out to the altar
that is before the LORD and make atonement for it.
He shall take some of the bull's blood
and some of the goat's blood
and put it on all the horns of the altar.
19 He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it
with his finger seven times
to cleanse it and to consecrate it
from the uncleanness of the Israelites.
20 "When Aaron has finished making atonement
for the Most Holy Place,
the Tent of Meeting and the altar,
he shall bring forward the live goat.
21 He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat
and confess over it all the wickedness
and rebellion of the Israelites - all their sins –
and put them on the goat's head.
He shall send the goat away into the desert
in the care of a man appointed for the task.
22 The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place;
and the man shall release it in the desert.
34 "This is to be a lasting ordinance for you:
Atonement is to be made once a year
for all the sins of the Israelites."
Christ Died for our Sins
Good Friday!
What a name for a day
that will be remembered in history
for the cruelty and injustice
that took place on a small hill outside of Jerusalem.
What was good about that Friday?
I invite you to come along on a journey to Jerusalem,
and more specifically to Calvary,
where the Son of God suffered and died.
For this sermon I’m drawing on Max Lucado’s book,
No Wonder they Call Him the Savior: Chronicles of the Cross
As we look at some of the events of that day,
I invite you to feel the impact
and the meaning of Christ's death for you.
It was Friday morning.
The breaking news on the streets of Jerusalem
Spread like a wild-fire.
"Have you heard?
They've got the son of the carpenter.
He will be executed.
It was just a matter of time before he would go too far.
They say that one of his own men turned him in."
Some people were weeping.
His mother Mary, his best friend John.
Many onlookers were making fun of him and laughing.
Some walked up the hill with the crouds
out of curiosity to watch the spectacle.
Many were angry that the sacred time of the Passover
was being disturbed by these social activists.
Some people were wondering
if this was the same man
who only a few days earlier rode into Jerusalem
on a carpet of palm leaves and clothes.
A few hours later,
At the foot of the cross
words were spoken that were meant to hurt
"Come down from the cross, if you are the son of God."
"If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself."
These were bitter words.
Full of hate and sarcasm.
Wasn't it enough that he was crucified?
Did they have to break his spirit too?
Sometimes I find Christ's words from the cross
hard to take for my own life.
How he managed to bring it over his lips is beyond me.
"Father, forgive them;
for they do not know what they are doing."
And then there were the thieves
that were crucified on his side.
While the one joined in with the mockery,
the other one found his savior.
Something told him that the man on the middle cross
was a righteous man.
He met the One who could save him, and he prayed,
"Jesus, is there any chance
you could put in a good word for me
when you come into your kingdom?"
The answer came back full of grace and compassion,
"Consider it done my friend.
Today you will be with me in paradise."
Why did Jesus give him that promise?
What could a worthless thief offer in return?
You're right: Absolutely Nothing!
And that's exactly the point.
The love of Jesus for us does not depend upon
what we do for him.
In His eyes we have value just because we are.
Not because of what we do or have done,
but simply because we are.
What an amazing grace!
Let me ask you something.
Remember a time when you felt very lonely.
You felt abandoned by your family and friends.
No one seemed to remember, that you even exist.
That's a pretty aweful feeling, isn't it.
Now listen to Jesus' cry of loneliness on the cross:
"My God, my God. Why did you forsake me!"
Never have any words carried so much hurt.
Never has any one person been so alone.
Jesus felt the full impact
of the act of chasing a scapegoat into the wilderness.
Lev. 16:21-22 describes that event:
The crowd becomes quiet as the priest receives the goat;
the pure, unspotted goat.
In sombre ceremony he places his hands on the young animal.
As the people witness, the priest makes his proclamation.
"The sins of the people be upon you."
The innocent animal receives the sin of the Israelites.
All the lusting, adultery, and cheating
are transferred from the sinners to this goat,
to this scapegoat.
He is then carried to the edge of the wilderness and released. Banished.
Sin must be purged, so the scapegoat is abandoned.
"Run, goat, run."
The people are relieved.
God is appeased.
The sin-bearer is alone.
That is also the story of Good Friday.
Every lie ever told,
every object ever coveted,
every promise ever broken was on his shoulder.
Jesus carried the guilt alone.
And God turned his head the other way.
Why did Jesus do it?
For those of us who are abandoned.
For those who long to be loved and appreciated.
For the person in a lonely and forgotten hospital bed.
For the elderly in the nursing home.
For the orphans, widows and widowers.
For all those who cast their eyes full of despair into the dark sky.
As he listens to our cry of loneliness,
he may not offer any quick answers or fast solutions.
But we can be assured that he understands,
for He too was alone on the cross.
Sometimes I wonder what really matters in life?
When all is said and done, what really counts?
Among all the do's and don'ts and should's and shouldn'ts,
what is essential?
What is indispensable?
What really matters?
Listen to the words of Paul in 1 Cor. 15,
For I delivered to you as of first importance
what I also received,
that Christ died for our sins
in accordance with the scriptures.
That he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day
in accordance with the scriptures,
and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
There it is!
Almost too simple.
Jesus was killed, buried, and resurrected.
The part that matters is the cross.
No more and no less.
The cross.
The hinges of history rest on this single event.
The tragedy of the cross gives all sufferers hope.
The scandal of God hanging on a cross
attracts everyone who has doubts.
Good Friday.
Noone was left untouched by the events of that day.
Noone.
You can't be neutral when your salvation depends on it.
There is something about the crucifixion
that makes everyone either step toward it
or away from it.
It simultaneously compels and repels.
God on a cross,
that is the ultimate act of compassion.
The Creator being sacrificed for his creation.
God convincing man once and for all
that sin and failure is still followed by forgiveness.
Good Friday!
The day on which Christ made good
for all our sins and sorrows.
Good Friday…
The day when Jesus
Was sent into the wasteland of human sin and sorrow
To make good before God what we could not do.
Christ died so that we may live!

Liebe Brüder und Schwestern im Herrn,
an diesem Karfreitag
versammeln wir uns
um den Tisch des Herrn.
In dieser Woche haben wir viel über Vergebung gehört
In den Vertiefungsversammlungen
Mit Prediger Artur Bergen.
Uns wurde wieder wichtig,
Daß Vergebung unter Menschen
Zu wiederhergestellten Beziehungen befähigt…
Und daß Vergebung von Gott
Uns frei macht von der Schuld.
Jesus feierte mit seinen Jüngern
das letzte Abendmahl vor seinem Leiden.
Mit ihm zu Tische saßen seine geliebten Freunde,
Die seine Lehren gehört hatten,
Und die mit ihm gewesen waren
Als er Kranke heilte,
Als er böse Geister austrieb,
Und die große Massen zu Essen gab.
Mit ihm zu Tische saß auch der Verräter…
Der vom bösen Feind überführt worden war,
Um ihn mit einem Kuß verriet.
Dannach wurde er verhört und verhöhnt…
Geschlagen und gekreuzigt…
Jesus musste sterben…
Die Nägel durchbohrten seine Hände und Füsse…
Die Dornenkrone durchstach sein Haupt…
Die Gottverlassenheit zerbrach sein Herz…
Seine Freunde liefen davon…
Sie verbargen das Angesicht vor ihm...
Sie kannten ihn nicht mehr…
Sie verleugneten ihn…
und sie fluchten ihn…
Dort am Kreuz auf Golgatha
Hängt all unser menschliches Versagen!
Dort hängt unser verfehltes Ziel als Kinder Gottes…
Unser Kleinglaube…
Der Unmut…
Das verzagte Herz…
Dort leidet der Gerechte Sohn Gottes…
Wo wir hätten büssen müssen.
An dieses alles werden wir erinnert
Wenn wir zum Tische des Herrn kommen.
Jesus weiss wer wir sind!
Er kennt unsere Schwächen.
Er weiss, daß ein Petrus ihn Verleugnen wird…
Und auch wir haben ihn so oft verleugnet!
Er weiss, daß sie alle im Garten einschlafen werden,
Wenn er in Todesangst auf Knien fleht.
Und auch wir sind so oft
in unserm geistlichen Leben eingeschlafen.
Er weiss auch, daß sie immer noch darum besorgt sind,
Wer von ihnen als der Grösste gelten soll…
Und auch wir sind um uns selbst besorgt.
Und trotz alle dem
Hält er das heilige Mahl
mit seinen Jüngern und sagt,
“Ich habe herzliches Verlangen
Dieses Mahl mit euch zu essen.”
Sein Leib wird gebrochen für uns…
Er ladet uns ein,
“Kommt, alle die ihr mühselig und beladen seid,
Ich will euch erquicken!”
Self-Examination
As we come to Christ’s table,
We are encouraged to discern the body together.
1. Korinther 11:27-29 says
27 Whoever eats the bread
or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner
will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Examine yourselves,
and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 for all who eat and drink without discerning the body,
eat and drink judgement against themselves.”
Wir werden aufgefordert,
Den Leib des Herrn zu erkennen
Und uns selbst zu prüfen.
“Welcher nun unwürdig von diesem Brot ißt,
oder von dem Kelch des Herrn trinkt,
der ist schuldig am Leib und Blut des Herrn.
Ein jeder aber prüfe sich selbst,
und also esse er von diesem Brot
und trinke von diesem Kelch.
Denn wer unwürdig ißt und trinket,
der ißt und trinkt sich selber zum Gericht,
damit daß er nicht unterscheidet den Leib des Herrn.”
[We come before God in silent confession…]
Almighty God,
our minds have so many hidden places.
We pray: Clean them from all deception.
Grant that we may honestly examine ourselves.
Shine upon us with the light of your Holy Spirit.
In confessing our sins to you,
Forgive us anew,
And restore unto us the Joy of our Salvation!
Let us respond to you in worship that is pleasing to you.
Gnädiger Vater,
Wir danken dir für deine Vergebung,
Und daß du uns durch Jesus Christus
Zum neuen Leben befähigst.
Dir sei Lob und Ehre.
Amen
Partaking of the Bread
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
it is right that we call to mind the
meaning of this Supper.
It is a remembrance of the sacrifice of Christ
for the sin of the world;
an encounter with the risen Lord;
a feeding on him in faith;
a communion with one another in his body,
the church;
and an anticipation of the day when
he will come again.
It is the Lord’s Table, and all who are baptized are
invited to it.
Therefore, let us come to the Lord’s Table in faith,
knowing our weakness, renouncing our sin,
trusting in Christ, seeking his grace.
When the bread and the cup are distributed
We will wait until all have been served,
And then we will eat and drink together.
Dies ist der Tisch des Herrn,
und alle, die getauft sind,
sind eingeladen am Mahl teilzunehmen.
Auch heissen wir Gäste willkommen,
die in guter Gemeinschaft mit Gott
und ihrem Mitmenschen stehen.
Wenn das Brot und der Kelch verteilt wird,
wollen wir warten,
bis alle bedient worden sind,
und dann essen wir gemeinsam.
Laßt uns im Vertrauen auf Gott
zum Tische des Herrn kommen.
The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed
took a loaf of bread,
and when he had given thanks,
he broke it and said,
“This is my body that is for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”

nach dem Mahl und sprach:
‘Dieser Kelch ist der neue Bund in meinem Blut;
das tut, sooft ihr daraus trinkt, zu meinem Gedächtnis.’
Denn sooft ihr von diesem Brot esst
und aus dem Kelch trinkt,
verkündigt ihr den Tod des Herrn, bis er kommt.”

Liebe Gemeinde,
wir haben unsern Herrn Jesus
auf dem Weg zum Kreuz begleitet.
Wir sind angespornt worden,
sein Leiden am Kreuz näher zu betrachten,
und unsere eigene Schuld am Kreuz abzulegen.
Wenn wir jetzt von hier gehen,
so wollen wir auch weiter in aller Stille nachsinnen,
was das Erlösungswerk Christi für uns bedeutet.
Wir wollen an diesem Stillen Freitag
in aller Ruhe und Stille wahrnehmen,
was Jesus uns in seinem Tod anbietet.
Laßt uns in Anbetung und Erwartung
auf den Auferstehungstag blicken!
Sei nur stille zu Gott, meine Seele;
denn er ist meine Hoffnung.
Er ist mein Fels,
meine Hilfe und mein Schutz,
daß ich gewiss nicht fallen werde. Ps. 62:6-7
1 My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation comes from him.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Ps 62
As we go from here today,
Let us contemplate in quietness
The meaning of Christ’s work of salvation on the Cross.
Let us worship him in our hearts
As we look with expectation
To the day of resurrection.
