This is Fathers Day and like mothers day we want to celebrate you Fathers
And fathers you have such an important role in the home just like the mothers
The wives and mothers are to help their husbands lead their families to run after Christ
Which would require you fathers to be leading your families to run after Christ
Ephesians 5:23 NASB95
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
I know some of you come to Church on Father’s Day expecting to hear how bad Fathers you are
But you are here aren’t you
You have brought your families to church today
I want to encourage you to continue to seek the Lord in your personal lives and to continue to encourage your wives, your children to seek the Lord
One of those ways we seek the Lord to be obedient to the law which God has given us and church which I think we are to still be obedient to today
And we will continue on with our series on the 10 commandments
I hope you have enjoyed this series
I hope you have learned something more about the 10 Commandments
More importantly I pray you are being obedient to the 10 commandments
If you will recall the purpose of the law was to point us to a relationship with Christ
These are just some ancient text that we have no use for today
The law still to this day points us to a right relationship with Christ
It reveals to us our sin, and by following it we are being obedient to Christ
Galatians 3:19–24 NASB95
19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
See the purpose of the law was to point us to Christ
It reveals to us that we are in need of a savior
Church I know it sounds weird but some people don’t believe they are in need of a savior
They don’t believe that what they are doing is sin
And church some of that comes back on us the church because for sometime the church has been soft on sin and allowed sin to go unchecked
The law convicts us of sin in our life
Our response is to run to Jesus and flee from sin
Even as believers are response to being convicted of sin in our life is to repent seek forgiveness and run to Jesus
Remember the law is broken into 2 tablets that Jesus confirms when He answers the the question about the greatest commandment
Matthew 22:36–40 NASB95
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
Remember the first commandment deals with the first 4 commands from the 10
They deal with your relationship with God directly
Have no other gods before God
Have no idols
Do not take the Lords name in vain
Keep the Sabbath
then the second Jesus says is just like to love our neighbor
The next 6 deal with your relationships with Other directly and God indirectly
Honor your Father and your Mother
Do not murder
Do not commit adultery
Do not steal
and that brings us to today’s commandment
Exodus 20:16 NASB95
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Much like stealing this seems just as simple
in a nut shell we are to not lie
Why is that so hard
Its because we like to see how close we can get to the line
Honesty church is always the best policy but sometimes it is not always nice
That is where we struggle
We don’t like the hard things and sometimes the hard thing to do is to be honest in our dealings with people
But why is that so hard
Its because we are a broken people
Because we are a greedy people, we are a selfish people
When you lie people stop wanting to do business with you
When you lie you are not loving people as you love yourself
We don’t like people lying to us so why do we lie to them
Church again in a nut shell we are to be honest when we deal with people
Not just those people we like
Not just those people who do business with
In the OT I believe when God gave this to Moses that was the idea
Those people you deal with since you are a new nation
Since you will be strangers walking through other nations to get to your land
I need you to be a honest people
Then when Jesus comes on scene
Remember He came to fulfill the law
Make it a matter of the heart
Jesus came and now it is a matter of the heart
And it is not just the people who you do business with
It is not just the people you live next to
Why is that
1 Peter 2:9 NASB95
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
The reason it is not just the people you do business with
It is not just those who live next door to you
But it is everyone you come into contact with
Everyone and everywhere you go church you are to be honest
Why because you are a chosen people
If you have a relationship with Christ
You no longer represent yourself but now you represent Christ because it is Christ who lives in you
Church we are to be honest with anyone and everyone because we are a holy people
We are to be set apart
We are to not look like the world or act like the world but we are to be different
And church today being different is to be honest anywhere and everywhere with anyone and everyone
To be set apart is to not lie
If you have a personal relationship with Christ you are set aside
You are a set apart people from the world
We have talked in the past about how you and I because of Christ we are to be different
Matthew 19:16–18 NASB95
16 And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;
Jesus Himself calls the guy asking the question to keep the law
We know that keeping the law only serves to point us to a personal relationship with Christ
Church to put it plainly if we are Christians we are to be Christ like to be just like Christ
Christ was honest and did not lie, so we should do the same
And church when and if we do lie or sin, our response is to repent, seek the Lords forgiveness and run back towards Jesus
Paul again calls on the church at Ephesus
Ephesians 4:25 NASB95
25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
Paul confirms the words of Jesus by calling the church to be an honest people
That message is to us this morning
We are to be an honest people because we are set apart
We are different than the world
Only because of what Christ did on the cross
Please hear me this morning
It is not about being honest to be different
It is because of what Christ did that makes you and I different there for because we are different we are commanded to be an honest people
What exactly did Jesus do to make you different I am so glad you asked
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 NASB95
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Christ took your place in death because of sin
Jesus took on sin although He had never sinned
Jesus took your sin and my sin and dealt with them so that you didn’t have to deal with them
Through Jesus we are reconciled to God
See because you and I have sinned
Church this morning we have talked about the law pertaining to lying
So this morning church if you have lied you stand guilty of sin which separates you from God
Jesus took that sin and dealt with it
Our response is to repent and run to Jesus
Then we are to get up and go out into a world and be an honest people
As we move to our time of Invitation
The invitation is to invite you to do business with God this morning
Maybe you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Christ
And maybe this morning you understand what Jesus did for you and this morning He offers salvation to you though Him
I would invite you this morning to come and speak with someone who can show you through Scripture how you can enter into a personal relationship with Christ
Or maybe this morning you are here and you already have a person relationship with Christ but this morning and understand that lying is a sin and you need to do business with God this morning
Or maybe you simply need to spend time in prayer at the altar this morning with just you and God
The altar is open for you to do business with God
