V.18 Sadducees - They only held to the first 5 Books of the Bible. The Torah. They had a denial of angels, demons, and the afterlife derived from their mis understanding of the Scriptures.

They were part of the Sanhedrin They along with the Pharisees
Pharisees were more liberal with the scriptures. They rightly held that they Writings and the Prophets were a part of the Divinely inspired Scriptures.
Sadducees enjoyed the relationship with Rome. They had wealth and prestige they were living their best life now because they did not believe in hell or heaven. They did not believe in the resurrection - That is why they were Sad You See…
So they try and make an argument that would trap Jesus. We see how successful everyone else has been with that.....
V.19 This is where the absurdity comes in.
V.19 This is where the absurdity comes in.
They try and make an argument from some of the most absurd conclusions.
Levirate Marriage -
A law and custom in ancient Israel that if a man died without sons his brother would take the widow for a wife in order to provide male offspring for his dead brother. The children then would be the heirs of their dead father's land and possessions and the family line would not be broken.
It is possible that the story is taken form the Apocrypha, the book of Tobit tells the story of a woman who married seven men and remained childless (3:7–15)—a story that may have inspired the fantastic plot proposed by the Sadducees to Jesus.
But this was a trap. and as all the traps Jesus answers them with a proper understanding of Scripture.
The Resurrection
The Resurrection
He gives them an answer
Christian Standard Bible Chapter 12
“Isn’t this the reason why you’re mistaken: you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God?

The Gospel according to Mark The Test of the Sadducees (12:18–27)
Jesus declares the Sadducees “ ‘in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.’ ” The Greek word for “error,” planan (from which “planet” is derived), means “to wander off track” or “to be led astray.”
It is like telling Tom Brady how to QB

So he goes to the Scriptures of God to show them they dont know the God of the Scriptures.
So he goes to the Scriptures of God to show them they dont know the God of the Scriptures.
He goes to a part of the Scriptures that they hold to. He shows them that the patriarchs of the faith are not dead.
6 Then he continued, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.
The majority of the Jewish nation believed in the resurrection.
Dan 12:2 “2 Many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to eternal life, and some to disgrace and eternal contempt.”
Ho 6:2 “2 He will revive us after two days, and on the third day he will raise us up so we can live in his presence.”
Ac 23:6-8 “6 When Paul realized that one part of them were Sadducees and the other part were Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am being judged because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead!” 7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, and neither angel nor spirit, but the Pharisees affirm them all.”
They say a resurrection of the nation and an individualistic resurrection
All the jews would be raised in Jerusalem through tunnels that lead there.
The resurrected life is not a prolonged earthly life but life in an entirely new dimension
1 Cor 15:40–44 “40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is different from that of the earthly ones. 41 There is a splendor of the sun, another of the moon, and another of the stars; in fact, one star differs from another star in splendor. 42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead: Sown in corruption, raised in incorruption; 43 sown in dishonor, raised in glory; sown in weakness, raised in power; 44 sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.”
Butterflies to caterpillars. They Are in the same life. They look different they behave differently but they are in the same place. That is sufficient to represent the life of a person who is saved but that is not the resurrection-
We cannot comprehend the resurrection. It is not like this life it is far beyond what we can imagine. We cannot understand it any better than the baby inside of my wife's belly can understand they world it is about to live in.

4 For he was crucified in weakness, but he lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by God’s power.
