Right at 3pm the bottom dropped out
Several waves of storms came through
We needed to light the fires by 5:30
And right at 5:20 it quit raining

Last week elder / deacon ordination service
We have been in our Revelation series and had gone through Chapter 12
Today we start up in Chapter 13 / I’m naming the terrible trio
SLIDE 6 “CHAPTER 13 JOHN WRITING IMAGE SLIDE”
What we saw in Chapter 12
How the dragon has been waging war with the children .....explain
Lets get into Revelation chapter 13
SLIDE 7
1 And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore.
Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names.
Dragon at the seashore and beast out of the sea is representing turmoil and chaos
Also interesting Daniel the prophet saw same image in Chapter 7
The ten horns and seven heads more than likely represent 10 kings and seven mountains. We will see more of this in Chapter 17 of Rev
Blasphemous here means - to slander, to distract, and to be injurous to another’s good name
More about this beast in verse 2
SLIDE 8
2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority.
Again as Daniel had seen in his visions we see same here in chapter 13
great authority- The beast is a vassal who acts on behalf of and with the destructive force of the dragon. Since the dragon bestows his power on the beast, the beast shares many of the dragon’s characteristics.
Verses 3 and 4 now
SLIDE 9
3 I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast;
4 they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?”
13:3 it had been slain - The beast’s wound is a parody of the Lamb’s wound in Rev 5:6.
his fatal wound was healed The exact nature of his wound is unknown. Presumably it was such that any recovery would be deemed miraculous. It is also possible that he would die and be brought back to life by the dragon or false prophet..
the whole earth was amazed This should have been the response to Christ’s resurrection. Instead, the beast receives this attention and response.
13:4 they worshiped the dragon By worshiping the beast, people are actually worshiping Satan—the force behind the beast’s power.
they worshiped the beast Likely a veiled reference to emperor worship.
Who is like the beast This is a parody of Israel’s praises of Yahweh’s uniqueness in the OT
who is able to wage war with him This question will be answered definitively. John is preparing his audience for the events of Rev 19.
SLIDE 10
5 There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven.
13:5 speaking arrogant words and blasphemies - A further allusion to Dan 7 (compare Dan 7:8, 11, 20).
forty-two months - This defined period of time would have been a comfort to Christians; they knew the beast’s reign of terror would not last forever. See Rev 11:2 and note.
SLIDE 11
7 It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.
SLIDE 12
8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.
9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear.
SLIDE 13
19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you
SLIDE 14
10 If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints.
WORSHIP TEAM COME
How do the saints prepare, how do we prepare, how do we fight this spiritual war, how do we stand and persevere to make it through
We see in this last verse the reference to the sword
We know even in the most desperate times as Jesus was arrested and Peter’s response
We know Hebrews 4 tells us that the word of God is active and alive and sharper than any two edges sword
I was talking to a brother the other day. He has been going through a lot the last year, he had another thing dropped on him the other day , he said his only defense was just stop and read God’s word.
He said I read Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel
The worlds and its ways, the culture, its pressures we don’t realize are wearing at us, to wear us down, to change the way we see and understand things. It wears us down and causes us to loose our strength and peace.
Romans twelve tells us perfectly how to stay strong and just as this brother had done the other day, he started renewing his mind
