So he said,
“Cursed be Canaan;
A servant of servants
He shall be to his brothers.”
May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
Be master of your brothers,
And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”
And she conceived again and bore a son and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
And Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it for us to kill our brother and cover up his blood?
“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoil.”
“The total of the numbered men of the camp of Judah: 186,400, by their armies. They shall set out first.
And the standard of the camp of the sons of Judah, according to their armies, set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army,
Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and the figs.
So he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.And he said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I myself meet the Lord yonder.”Then the Lord met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”And he came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the leaders of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the Lord spoken?”Then he took up his discourse and said, “Arise, O Balak, and hear;
Give ear to me, O son of Zippor!
“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent;
Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
“Behold, I have received a command to bless;
When He has blessed, then I cannot revoke it.
“He has not observed misfortune in Jacob;
Nor has He seen trouble in Israel;
The Lord his God is with him,
And the shout of a king is among them.
“God brings them out of Egypt,
He is for them like the horns of the wild ox.
“For there is no omen against Jacob,
Nor is there any divination against Israel;
At the proper time it shall be said to Jacob
And to Israel, what God has done.
“Behold, a people rises like a lioness,
And as a lion it lifts itself;
It shall not lie down until it devours the prey,
And drinks the blood of the slain.”
Then Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all nor bless them at all!”But Balaam answered and said to Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘Whatever the Lord speaks, that I must do’?”
Then Balak said to Balaam, “Please come, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will be agreeable with God that you curse them for me from there.”So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor which overlooks the wasteland.And Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”And Balak did just as Balaam had said, and offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.
“He couches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a lion, who dares rouse him?
Blessed is everyone who blesses you,
And cursed is everyone who curses you.”
“I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near;
A star shall come forth from Jacob,
And a scepter shall rise from Israel,
And shall crush through the forehead of Moab,
And tear down all the sons of Sheth.
“One from Jacob shall have dominion,
And shall destroy the remnant from the city.”
“For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord shall send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.
and toward her afterbirth which issues from between her legs and toward her children whom she bears; for she shall eat them secretly for lack of anything else, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy shall oppress you in your towns.
Curds of cows, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs,
And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats,
With the finest of the wheat—
And of the blood of grapes you drank wine.
And this regarding Judah; so he said,
“Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah,
And bring him to his people.
With his hands he contended for them;
And mayest Thou be a help against his adversaries.”
And of Dan he said,
“Dan is a lion’s whelp,
That leaps forth from Bashan.”
Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel inquired of the Lord, saying, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”And the Lord said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”
“You who ride on white donkeys,
You who sit on rich carpets,
And you who travel on the road—sing!
And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities in the land of Gilead that are called Havvoth-jair to this day.
After this it came about that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
Now the sons of Israel arose, went up to Bethel, and inquired of God, and said, “Who shall go up first for us to battle against the sons of Benjamin?” Then the Lord said, “Judah shall go up first.”
“Thou hast also made my enemies turn their backs to me,
And I destroyed those who hated me.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey, that you may live and not die.” But do not listen to Hezekiah, when he misleads you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.”
Now the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel (for he was the first-born, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright.Though Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the leader, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph),the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel were Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.The sons of Joel were Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son,Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried away into exile; he was leader of the Reubenites.And his kinsmen by their families, in the genealogy of their generations, were Jeiel the chief, then Zechariahand Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who lived in Aroer, even to Nebo and Baal-meon.
“Yet, the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever. For He has chosen Judah to be a leader; and in the house of Judah, my father’s house, and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel.
“I was at ease, but He shattered me,
And He has grasped me by the neck and shaken me to pieces;
He has also set me up as His target.
“Can you hunt the prey for the lion,
Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
“But as for Me, I have installed My King
Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
“I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘Thou art My Son,
Today I have begotten Thee.
‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance,
And the very ends of the earth as Thy possession.
‘Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron,
Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.’”
Lest he tear my soul like a lion,
Dragging me away, while there is none to deliver.
He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair;
He lurks to catch the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net.
He is like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion lurking in hiding places.
Thou hast also made my enemies turn their backs to me,
And I destroyed those who hated me.
They open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring lion.
“Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet of My head;
Judah is My scepter.
May he also rule from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.
Let the nomads of the desert bow before him;
And his enemies lick the dust.
Let the kings of Tarshish and of the islands bring presents;
The kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.
And let all kings bow down before him,
All nations serve him.
He has remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
The young lions roar after their prey,
And seek their food from God.
“Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet of My head;
Judah is My scepter.
The Lord will stretch forth Thy strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Thine enemies.”
Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
The eye that mocks a father,
And scorns a mother,
The ravens of the valley will pick it out,
And the young eagles will eat it.
And He will judge between the nations,
And will render decisions for many peoples;
And they will hammer their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not lift up sword against nation,
And never again will they learn war.
And He dug it all around, removed its stones,
And planted it with the choicest vine.
And He built a tower in the middle of it,
And hewed out a wine vat in it;
Then He expected it to produce good grapes,
But it produced only worthless ones.
Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
We were pregnant, we writhed in labor,
We gave birth, as it were, only to wind.
We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth
Nor were inhabitants of the world born.
”Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold;
My chosen one in whom My soul delights.
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the nations.
“He will not be disheartened or crushed,
Until He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.”
“Turn to Me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth;
For I am God, and there is no other.
Go forth from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans!
Declare with the sound of joyful shouting, proclaim this,
Send it out to the end of the earth;
Say, “The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob.”
He says, “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also make You a light of the nations
So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
“My righteousness is near, My salvation has gone forth,
And My arms will judge the peoples;
The coastlands will wait for Me,
And for My arm they will wait expectantly.
“Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
“For behold, darkness will cover the earth,
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you,
And His glory will appear upon you.
“And nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
“Lift up your eyes round about, and see;
They all gather together, they come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your daughters will be carried in the arms.
“Then you will see and be radiant,
And your heart will thrill and rejoice;
Because the abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The wealth of the nations will come to you.
Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like the one who treads in the wine press?
“Yet I planted you a choice vine,
A completely faithful seed.
How then have you turned yourself before Me
Into the degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?
‘And their leader shall be one of them,
And their ruler shall come forth from their midst;
And I will bring him near, and he shall approach Me;
For who would dare to risk his life to approach Me?’ declares the Lord.
and say,
‘What was your mother?
A lioness among lions!
She lay down among young lions,
She reared her cubs.
‘When she saw, as she waited,
That her hope was lost,
She took another of her cubs
And made him a young lion.
‘And he walked about among the lions;
He became a young lion,
He learned to tear his prey;
He devoured men.
‘And he destroyed their fortified towers
And laid waste their cities;
And the land and its fulness were appalled
Because of the sound of his roaring.
‘A ruin, a ruin, a ruin, I shall make it. This also will be no more, until He comes whose right it is; and I shall give it to Him.’
For I will be like a lion to Ephraim,
And like a young lion to the house of Judah.
I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away,
I will carry away, and there will be none to deliver.
And it will come about in that day
That the mountains will drip with sweet wine,
And the hills will flow with milk,
And all the brooks of Judah will flow with water;
And a spring will go out from the house of the Lord,
To water the valley of Shittim.
And this One will be our peace.
When the Assyrian invades our land,
When he tramples on our citadels,
Then we will raise against him
Seven shepherds and eight leaders of men.
And they will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,
The land of Nimrod at its entrances;
And He will deliver us from the Assyrian
When he attacks our land
And when he tramples our territory.
Then the remnant of Jacob
Will be among many peoples
Like dew from the Lord,
Like showers on vegetation
Which do not wait for man
Or delay for the sons of men.
And the remnant of Jacob
Will be among the nations,
Among many peoples
Like a lion among the beasts of the forest,
Like a young lion among flocks of sheep,
Which, if he passes through,
Tramples down and tears,
And there is none to rescue.
Your hand will be lifted up against your adversaries,
And all your enemies will be cut off.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
He is just and endowed with salvation,
Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
“And He will pass through the sea of distress,
And strike the waves in the sea,
So that all the depths of the Nile will dry up;
And the pride of Assyria will be brought down,
And the scepter of Egypt will depart.
and to Judah were born Perez and Zerah by Tamar; and to Perez was born Hezron; and to Hezron, Ram;
‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For out of you shall come forth a Ruler,
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”
And the multitudes going before Him, and those who followed after were crying out, saying,
“Hosanna to the Son of David;
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest!”
For my eyes have seen Thy salvation,Which Thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples,A light of revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Thy people Israel.”
the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,
For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.
and one of the elders *said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”
