PQ: What pieces of encouragement are present in this verse?
UW: Pieces
Intro.: [AGS]: A man was driving down the road one day with his friend in the passenger seat. His friend was enduring challenging times in life, and it led to a difficult complexity in his relationship with his children. The man driving looked over at his friend, and he asked, “Friend, someday when your daughter is older and is dating- do you want her to date a man who is like you?; Someday, your daughter will begin to ponder who God is and why people call Him Father, do you want to have the same idea of God as she has of you when she calls Him Father?” The point of the questions was to prompt the friend to think about the influence he had in the life of his children. [TS]: The text today highlights that a righteous person has an encouraging impact on those around him, namely, his children. [RS]: You and I, whether we are parents or not, have an impact on the people who are near us each day. The question is this: Are we pleased with the impact we have on them?
TS: Let us examine a few pieces of encouragement from this verse now:
The first piece of encouragement is to live with integrity. [7a]
The word integrity means to be blameless.
Oxford dictionary defines integrity in two ways, “1. the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.; 2. the state of being whole and undivided.”
APPLICATION: A person who is righteous is one who lives a life of integrity, walking with upright testimony.
The second piece of encouragement is the impact of integrity. [7b]
The latter part of the verse details the impact of integrity:
the individual’s children will be happy/blessed. One translation paraphrased this verse to say, “the righteous person makes it easier for their children”
APPLICATION: A person who is righteous is one who clearly lays the path of integrity for those after them to follow in it.
Conclusion:
[1] Do your children look up to the life you lead?
[2] Is the path of integrity easily laid out for your children to follow after?
