Core Bible Discovery
God’s commandments
God’s name
7 “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Ask: What do you think it means to misuse God’s name?
We respect God’s name when we talk
Misuse of His name = not representing God well
Example:
Name = Sadie
Trips and falls
“Pulling a sadie”
Ask: How would you feel about that?
Matters to us
Matters to God
Need to know what His name is
Different names for God in the Bible
13 But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?”
14 God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.”
Ask: What do you think “I Am” means?
He just exists
Hand out a paperclip
Goal: get clip to be as tall as shortest person
Can use whatever (chairs, etc)
Ask: What does your paperclip depend on in order to be wheter it is?
Ask: What do you depend on in order to exist?
God = I Am bc doesn’t depend on anything
Amazing example of His power
Because God is “I Am,” we respect God’s name when we talk.
Play “Would You Rather” Game (left and right side of room; winner advances to next round)
Would you rather...
Break your leg or win a million dollars?
Have your house burn down?
Get a painful shot at the doctor?
Get a C on a test?
Eat a brownie?
Trip and skin your knee?
Play a board game?
Ask: How hard was it to make choices in this game? Why was one choice obviously better every time?
A million dollars > everything else
How God compares to anything else
God is way above
17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.
God of gods and Lord of lords
Everything else falls short
Because God is better than anyone or anything, we respect God’s name when we talk.
Next Bible verse lists four names for God
Listen for the one that means the most to you
6 For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Ask: Which name means the most to you? Why?
Closer look at two of them
“Mighty God”
What it means to be mighty
Get kids to do as many pushups as they can.
Ask: How many pushups could you do?
Ask: How did you know when you were finished?
Even strongest human runs out of strength eventually
God never runs out
He is strong and mighty!
Because He is our mighty God, we respect God’s name when we talk.
God is also our prince of peace
Ask: How would you describe peace to someone younger than you?
God brings all of that!
Let’s enjoy a moment of peace.
Allow for a minute of silence.
Let’s read another name for God
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”
Another language
First and last letters of Greek alphabet
“God is the A and Z”
But God doesn’t really have a beginning or end
Confusing, so let’s draw it
Hand each kid a paper plate and a marker
Have kids write the alphabet around the rims of their plates, trying to space it so that it goes evenly all of the way around.
Ask: If you didn’t know the alphabet, how would you know which letter on your plate was first and which was last?
God is the Alpha and Omega
He always was, which means he was there when our world began.
He always will be, which means he’ll be there when our world ends.
He is forever!
That is why we respect God’s name when we talk
Let’s look at one more word used to describe God
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
God is holy
Use a lot
Figure out what it means
Set the kids in a circle
Have the kids pass the toothbrush around
When it’s their turn, kids will finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t use my toothbrush anymore if it had touched...”
Ask: Why wouldn’t you use your toothbrush if it had touched those things?
Holy = “set apart”
Special, not polluted by bad things
God = clean and pute
God is holy, so we respect God’s name when we talk
Now that we know more about God’s names, we understand why he’s worthy of respect.
So what does it mean to respect his name?
It’s about our hearts.
Repeat this sentence after me, in your saddest tone possible: “I’m so excited to go to the amusement park”
Ask: How well did your tone match the words you were saying?
Ask: What are some examples of how people might say God’s name in a way that doesn’t reflect a heart that loves Him?
When respect name, words match hearts
We respect God’s name when we talk
Life Application Wrap-Up
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor
and gave him the name above all other names,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Have kids assume bowing postures as they praise Jesus for His name.
