Father of Our Faith
Father of Our Faith
As I come forward
SLIDE 1 “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY / GLAD YOU ARE HERE”
Encouraging words from worship
Happy Father’s Day
Dr Harry Ironside - pastor of the famous Moody Church in Chicago
One year on vacation visiting at another church sat in on a Sunday School class
A teacher new to it - was not prepared
asked the question “how were people saved in the Old Testament?”
tell the rest of the story
Saved the same way “by faith” (before Christ came)
In fact when reading the great faith chapter of Hebrews 11 we can get caught up in such great examples of faith
Then you step back and realize all these individuals of Hebrews 11 were of the Old Testament and saved by faith (before Christ came)
SLIDE 2 “ABRAHAM FATHER OF OUR FAITH”
This Father’s Day the Lord has given us a message “Abraham the Father of our Faith”
A message about a father handing down probably the most valuable thing we could carry on with and exercise in all our lives today
First a little background before
Actually our first Scripture today in Hebrews 11 about Abraham
SLIDE 3
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
SLIDE 4
10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
In Romans 4 the Apostle Paul gives a perfect layout of being saved by faith
A great encouragement for us today because sometimes we get caught up in trying to prove other acts of righteous and taking for granted just the one true gift of grace that saves us.
PUT UP SLIDE 5 NOW
SLIDE 5
2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
Paul had found himself even asking the Galatian church, “how is that you began in the Spirit are now being perfected in the flesh?”
Look at this amazing layout the Holy Spirit gives Paul in Romans 4
SLIDE 6
1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
SLIDE 7
4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.
5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
SLIDE 8
6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven,
And whose sins have been covered.
8 “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”
SLIDE 9
9 Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.”
SLIDE 10
10 How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
Circumcision was a seal to remind you that you belonged to God......not to remind God you belong to Him
The uncircumcised also referred to the Gentiles
Abraham is the father of all believers, both Jews and Gentiles
Many Jews believed that being descendants of Abraham and through efforts of circumcision and efforts to keep the Laws made them right with God
The Law was not given to save men but to show men they need to be saved
More verses here in Romans 4 that its all by faith and grace
SLIDE 11
12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
Paul gives proof here that Abraham was saved by faith befor he was circumcised and before the Law was given later through Moses
SLIDE 12
13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
SLIDE 13
16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
SLIDE 14
17 (as it is written, “A father of many nations have I made you”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.
18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”
Even as Moses was chose by God to free the Jews of slavery in Egypt
God spoke to Moses through the burning bush
Moses asked God who should I tell the Israelites has sent me
SLIDE 15
14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
How brilliantly Jesus ties this all together with the experience Moses had here and with the father of our faith Abraham
Keep in mind it was 1700 years from Genesis 15 to these passages we are fixing to see in John chapter 8
This chapter starts off with Jesus at the Mt of Olives and the religious leaders brings the woman caught in adultery to Him
“He who is without sin cast the first stone”
“Where did all those who condemn you go?”
“I condemn you neither, go and sin no more”
Keep in mind or look again at what God told moses in Exodus chapter 3
After Jesus tells the woman neither do I condemn you
He starts speaking to the people saying
SLIDE 16
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
I AM the Light of the world
You judge according to the flesh, I AM not judging anyone
I AM the One who testifies about Myself and the Father who sent Me
SLIDE 17
18 “I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.”
I AM from above, you are of this world, I AM not of this world
Unless you believe I AM He, you will die in your sins
SLIDE 18
24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
When you lift up the Son of Man you will know I AM He
In verse 56 Jesus tells them this which connects all the Lord has been showing us today
SLIDE 19
56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
SLIDE 20
57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
SLIDE 21
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
WORSHIP TEAM COME
