Luke 22:19–20 ESV
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Ephesians 6:10–17 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

The Purpose of the Sword

The word used for Sword here is the word for the roman short sword the gladius.
We often think of the swords sole purpose to be attacking.
However many of the sword forms or uses of the sword were designed to parry or use the sword to block another’s attack while also creating an opening with which to attack.
Therefore the sword is not just an offensive weapon but also a defensive one.

The Word of God

The Word of God is the Bible and is useful to direct our lives.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Scripture is breathed by God - His word
Profitable - useful for teaching or learning
For Reproof - disproving error
For Correction - for reformation of sin
for training for disciple to righteousness
The Word of God is living and discerning
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Word of God is not a static dead thing it is not just a a book.
It is alive- keep in mind it is the breath of God the source of life for man
Since it is alive it can discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Word will reveal these intentions. When people hear the word they either accept it and grow closer to God or they reject it and turn further away from Him.
The Word is supremely effective
Isaiah 55:11 ESV
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Not return empty but full
accomplish/succeed
It is not enough to say it works but rather that it is supremely effective.
This is not 50% or even 80 or 90% percent successful but rather 100% successful.
The word accomplishes exactly what God desires.
Thus it always teaches it always reproves it always corrects and it always trains us.

The Protection of the Word of God

The Word of God protects against sin
Psalm 119:11 ESV
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
The more we study the word the more we know the desires of God and the love of God.
As we better understand God’s love we love him more and want him to be happy thus we fulfill his desires.
Therefore we do not not sin against him.
The Word of God protects against discouragement
Romans 15:4 ESV
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
The word provides encouragement and hope the two main traits people need to keep on going through the trials and difficulties of life.
The Word of God protects against deceit
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
The word is truth and often reveals the falsehoods of the world.
