Introduction:
I love Vacation Bible School. There are churches all across this country who are doing away with VBS. They don’t have enough volunteers, they don’t think they will have many children, they don’t see the benefit of it, and every other excuse under the sun. Folks, I here to tell you that I love VBS.
It is a week where parents entrust their most precious items to us…Their children. It is a week that we get 2 and half hours each night to teach them about Jesus using all kinds of creative ways. It is a week that we get to identify new people, invite people, invest in people, instruct people, and make an impact in people and in our community. Those words that start with I that I just mentioned are not by accident. They are hanging on our wall just outside the sanctuary and that is the strategy in which we are to be Going and Making Disciples of all nations. VBS is a week where we get to carry out the mandate to Make Disciples. It is a Great Commission Week!
This week, our adults will be teaching these kids about one of my favorite Disciples. Jesus had the one that he loved, and I have the one that I love. Probably because I can relate to him more than some of the others.
I like to fish, I’ve taken chances when God called me to do so, I haven’t always stood up for Christ even though I’ve been a follower of his for over 34 years, I have boldly preached as this disciple did, and I’ve even seen people come to the Lord that thought they were too far gone. The disciple who will be looked at this week is Peter.
Peter had his way of doing things. However, we he learned to follow Jesus’ path and ways of doing things rather than his own. His life was blessed forever…even when he was crucified upside down because he knew where he would be spending eternity.
Take your Bible and look at Psalm 25:4-5
4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
The VBS Theme verse this week is Psalm 25:4. However, I think it is also important to look at verse 5.
Make Me To Know Your Ways, O Lord!
Make Me To Know Your Ways, O Lord!
Whose way is the Psalmist wanting to know? The Lord’s Way.
Who’s the Psalmist here? DAVID!!!!!!!
The NKJV Study Bible Chapter 25
Show me is an appeal to God to enter into David’s life more directly, to help him become conformed to the character of God (Rom. 12:1, 2)
Faithlife Study Bible Psalm 25
25:4–5 The psalmist uses several Hebrew words here for learning or instruction as he asks Yahweh to teach (lamad), lead (darakh), and make known (yada') His true paths. The psalmist trusts in Yahweh because He guides and protects him (Ps 23:1–3).
Thru the Bible with J. Vernon McGee Psalm 25
There are two ways a man can go. He can go God’s way or his own way. God gives us a choice. We can walk in the path of our choosing. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Prov. 14:12). What a glorious thing it is to be able to call out to God and ask Him to show us the way we should go.
Teach Me Your Paths!
Teach Me Your Paths!
Whose path does the Psalmist want to be taught?
Not the Department of Education
Not even the paths of our families
Not the paths of man
Not the path of happiness!
Not the paths of the Founding Fathers of our Nation
Rather THE FOUNDING FATHER OF EVERYTHING
The Only Path That Matters is The Path of Righteousness
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
The Only Way To Walk in the Path of Righteousness is to Walk with God. The Only way to Walk with God is to seek Him and his Righteousness (Matthew 6:33 “33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” The only way to Walk with God is to Spend Time in Prayer and In His Word!!!!!!
Talk About The Bible Here. Bring Up How We Will Say A Pledge To The Bible for the week.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Lead Me In Your Truth (vs. 5)
Lead Me In Your Truth (vs. 5)
Talk about how there are those who don’t believe in Absolute Truth. However, Christ is the only truth. As a matter of fact, John 14:6 “6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” tells us that He is THE TRUTH!!!!!!
Why should we desire to walk in the truth? Because that is God’s Way! That is the only way. Walking in our own ways is walking according to the flesh which is against what God desires. We are to strive to always walk in the truth because True Freedom only comes when we seek and follow the Truth (JESUS)
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Recognize Where Salvation Comes From! (vs. 5)
Recognize Where Salvation Comes From! (vs. 5)
Be Patient and WAIT for GOD to: (vs. 5)
Be Patient and WAIT for GOD to: (vs. 5)
Make His Ways Known
Make His Ways Known
Teach his paths to you
Teach his paths to you
Lead you in the truth and teach you to follow the truth
Lead you in the truth and teach you to follow the truth
If you trust God for eternal life, you can trust God for everything because He is where Salvation Comes From.
If you trust God for eternal life, you can trust God for everything because He is where Salvation Comes From.
It’s called the Gospel of Jesus Christ
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
God will do all these things if we will only wait upon the Lord.
Talk about Abraham and Sarah. She didn’t want to wait so she told Abraham to have a child with Hagar. How did that turn out?
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Being Patient and letting God be God
Brings strength, Hope, and endurance to walk in HIS WAY!
25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
Don’t ever forget that patience is a Fruit of The Spirit. If you can’t be patient and wait on God, how will we ever be patient with others?
So What?
So What?
So, today....Maybe we all need to take a lesson from the Psalmist David and cry out for the Lord to
4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
To be able to do so, we must also do what David did:
We need to realize we are a sinner: Psalm 25:6-7
6 Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!
Call Upon The Never Ending Love of Jesus (vs. 7)
Seek Forgiveness of our Sins: Psalm 25:11
11 For your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great.
Start Living For The Lord!!!!
Also, don’t forget, David was a Man after God’s Own Heart so He is not talking from the point of a lost man. He is talking about the life of a person who is saved, one who has a relationship with God. How is your relationship with God? Do you need to confess and turn back to Him today?
For the person who has never been saved. It is very simple
