Romans 16:17–20 NIV
17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
Romans 16:17 NIV
17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.
They will be slick tongued
Romans 16:18 NIV
18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
Galatians 1:8 NIV
8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!
Distorting what?
God’s Gospel
Galatians 1:9 NIV
9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
Then, Circumcision, obeying the ceremonial law - Judaizers
People tend to slide to the easy path. If something is hard, the automatic tendency is to look for an easier way to get results.
In religion, doing good works and practices looks good on the outside and not only do others see this, you see this.
God does not look on the outward, but looks at the heart of man.
This is not so easy. You cannot do a few good deeds to make up for a sinful heart.
Holy Spirit conviction, Confession, repentance, leaving old appetites and likes at a heart level. This is the mark of a true Christian.
The practices may have changed, but mans heart is still the same today as it was in their day.
How do we try to cover the sin in our hearts to avoid dealing with it the way God wants?
We might give a large monetary offering.
We might serve in the church in some capacity.
Some even go so far as to teach classes in the church.
Get baptized, go to prayer, get involved in social help projects like
pregnancy resource center
Earth day clean up
dog and cat rescue
Save the whales… what ever happened to that? I guess other emotion tapping causes have pushed them to the depths of forgetfulness.
Not that these programs are bad, but when a person covers their sin or uses anything to avoid the heart rending work of the Holy Spirit in their life, it is a terrible sin and and affront to God.
Galatians 3:1–3 NIV
1 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?
How to deal with a divider
Know where they come from.
Acts 20:29–31 NIV
29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.
From outside
From the Inside
Paul warned them of this day and night… with tears.
Identify - rectify
Titus 3:10 NIV
10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.
If you are born again, spiritually alive in Christ, a real, spirit filled Christian -
You will be Open and hungry for God’s truth - even if it hurts.
How can this be done?
The Holy Spirit of God is in you. You are possessed by the Spirit of God to ultimately become what He desires because he is the one at work in you doing what need to be done to accomplish His will for your life.
Philippians 2:13 NIV
13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
How did you get there?
God made Adam and Eve to live in the garden of eden. The serpent deceived Eve into eating what God said not to eat. She gave it to Adam and he too ate from the fruit. At that moment, man’s good relationship with God was broken. They sinned against a perfect, holy God. The result of that is death.
The wage of sin is death and because Adam sinned, all humanity fell with him. since that moment every person born has been born in sin.
God as judge will rightly condemn every person according to what they have done. There is no escaping sins grip. The fires of hell await every human that dies in their sin.
If you are a Christian, you recognized that. And it was a terrible moment.
But God, God had a plan in place before the world was established to make a way for man to be restored in perfect standing with himself.
Jesus, the son of God, the third person of the Holy Trinity, came to earth and was born of a woman. He was fully God and fully human.
He lived a perfect life without sin.
He surrendered himself to be wrongfully condemned to death.
He surrendered himself to be beaten and whipped to a bloody pulp - without retaliation.
He surrendered himself to be nailed to and hung on a cross.
He surrendered himself to death on that cross.
The wrath of God against sin was poured out upon Jesus that day.
As a result of this sacrifice, the wrath of God against sin was satisfied.
Jesus was buried in a tomb
He rose to life on the third day
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father.
All authority in all creation is in his hands.
God has chosen a special people on which to pour out his grace and mercy.
Anyone who comes by the geace of God, through the door of faith, in Christ alone, shall be saves.
Any who hear this message, believe the message, confess Jesus as Lord and savior- shall be saved.
They are righteous because of Christ’s work on the cross. He as ruler and judge paid the price for them and has justified them - making them in right standing with God in perfection in the heavens.
