This morning we bring to a close our series on the 10 commandments
This has been a long series
I pray you have a better understanding of the 10 commandments and that you begin to apply them to your daily lives if you are not all ready
That is the difficulty of sermons right
You listen to them but if there is no application then church you just listened to a really good
So more than just enjoying them I pray you are applying them to your daily lives
When you do that I know it points you to a right relationship with Christ
It does that by more often then not pointing out the sin in your life
So the 10 commandments
Have no God before God
No Idols
Do not take the Lords name in vain
Keep the Sabath
Matthew 22:37 NASB95
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
Those 4 commands are summed up by this command that Jesus said when asked about the commands
These 4 deal directly with your relationship with Christ
Without that relationship nothing else works the way it should
Do you understand how important that relationship is to the rest of the relationships you will have in life
It is the foundation of everything you do
You can either be wise or a fool
Matthew 7:24–27 NASB95
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”
Church you will either be a wise man or women or a fool based off what you do after you have heard the message
The message is this is the most important relationship in your life
So if you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Christ you can change that this morning
You can this very morning enter into a personal relationship with Christ
Then Jesus sums up the remaining commands
Matthew 22:39 NASB95
39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
This command deals directly with your relationship with others
and indirectly with Christ because when you are loving others as you love your self you are being obedient to Christ
Those remaining commands are
Honor your father and your mother
Do not murder
Do not commit adultery
Do not steal
Do not lie
And today’s 10 commandment
Exodus 20:17 NASB95
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Church you shall not covet
To Covet is to yearn for something or to posses something
We are not to look at our neighbors stuff and dwell on that stuff and desire it
There is a difference between appreciating it or being glad they have it and desiring it and dwelling on it to the point you want it
In Old Testament days it was what you saw as you were going to the market or working the field
The newest Oxen or plow
Maybe you lived on a coast it was a new fishing boat or net
And then it even went as far as wanting your neighbors wife
See that your neighbor is newly married or even in the Old Testament Days hearing they got another wife
Sounds iraly similar to how you and I should not be committing adultery which is to lust after someone in our heart
If adultery is the an act of sexual sin then covent is the unhealthy desire for the stuff
fast forward today
It is the scrolling through facebook or social media and gauking over peoples vaction photos
Again there is a difference between the admiring them and appreciating them and then wishing down deep in your heart that you want what they have
To see the new car they bought and then really want a new car of your own
It is the looking at your friends wedding and wishing your wedding would look like that
It is the desiring your wedding to look like that
The root of the issue with coveting is the greed
The desiring what everyone has on top of what you already have
You have what God has given you and dare I say but you need to be ok with it
When we start desiring what everyone has on top of what you already have is a form of idolatry
You are making an idol out of what other people have
And as we have seen before we are to have no idols
We are not to worship the created things
Ephesians 5:5 NASB95
5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
Paul is telling the church in ephesis, that those who are covetous or those who have idols or the greedy, or the imoral or impure
Those are the people who have broken the law
He is saying those who have broken the law will have no inheritence in the kingdom of God
That means that those who broke the law will not get into heaven
So for those of you who are here this morning and obsess over the latest and greatest on social media
Or the desiring you have when you go to your friends house and desire what they have that you don’t
I know you already know but I will say it anyway
News Flash you broke the law
I have broken the law
Please hear this this morning
you stand guilty of sin because you have gone from appreciation of your friends stuff and things to a grred obsession for their physical stuff
But
We could leave the sermon there but that is not what Jesus did
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
See while you stand guilty before God because of sin this morning
Jesus did something about it
He loved you enough to take your debt of sin and deal with it
This morning maybe you are here and do not know Jesus as your personal Lord and savior
Then hear me this morning you have no hope, you have no joy, you don’t know what love really and truly is
You are a lost person and will spend eternity separated from God who lives in heaven because of the sin that separates you
This morning because of what Jesus did on the cross you can have a personal relationship with Jesus this morning
you can have Forgiveness of sin through Jesus
You can accept the free gift of Jesus’s death on the cross this morning by repenting from your sin
To stop it
To turn from it
To set things up in your life so that you don’t run back to that sin
To accept the forgiveness and grace and mercy God gives you and to live in that
To Run after Jesus
As the bad comes up for our time of invitation if you are here this morning and do not know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior this is your time to respond and come forward and speak with someone
Or maybe you need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar
