Intro
Surely story prince in beggar
story
Doctrine: royalty underneath the veil
when help least, help me
Leper washing in the filthy Jordan
simple human life of Mary and Jesus
An unveiling that doesnt come until dealing with the plain veil
Be not afraid
solemnly commands gospel, no fear but God
fear/anxiety: belief something MIGHT cause us harm
emotion fear (not itself/ much like ‘love’): compulsion to believe something MIGHT cause harm
emotion violent chaos in the soul
Like dragging soul on chain
fear tranquil belief something MIGHT cause harm
where freedom is, no chain dragging
[prob too complicated]: (despite claim) fear is anxiety and anxiety is fear
anticipations something past, present, future MIGHT unhappiness]
Fear not: calmly/firmly believe that something CANT cause harm,
then better resist the biological emotion of fear/anxiety
secret key to righteousness and inner peace
STATE OF GRACE much lack peace from improper fear/anxiety, + almost all fear/anxiety is improper
which two methods show us fear?
how start avoiding fear? What do with the beggar prince?
Christ is our life
in this life veiled under ratty garment of appear
our life as the beggar prince personified
If consider beggar by appearance
often fearful
Likewise lives based on appearance have room for fear/anxiety
but what will be unveiled?
what is secret that will be shouted from rooftop?
THAT NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING works for our harm for those who seek God
Despite appearances, all happens to us is royalty underneath the guise
every
ratty garment
foul stench
violent scowl
hides the royal reality every moment
even a single hair falling off your head (a comfort to yall who are balding) better for you and others than if didnt.
you are not some cog in the machine
all you have to decide is how respond: sin or faith
Clearer vision
If only you could see the end of all things when our lives are unveiled to reveal the reality thats been there all along under rags
think of stories that make you want to go back and rewatch it know the secret in the end
what the prince was doing now you know it was prince
spoiler:
signs
Prestige
What we experience now can be viewed different in time with nostalgia
just think about a great work like Lord of the Rings
the good ending is almost sad when the battle is over now that you can look back with fondness even on the terrors of the story knowing the end
the end contextualizes the whole unveiling hidden glory that before seemed hidden by rags
after all we are the religion of the cross, where the greatest symbol horror now is now seen as one of the most glorious symbols of righteousness.
Recognize reality
underneath the rags
only recognize one thing as unhappy: being rejected by God [Goodness Himself]
calmly and rationally cling to the truth that no evil in our life suffered in the life is for our unhappiness: Fear no evil!
not even a hair of our head fall without our good in mind, even though we, by appearance, are abandoned beggars.

Notes:

Me:
Final unveiling makes past seem great, want to even go back
nostalgia
the cross, now symbol of glory
simple life as great majesty
good book or move where want to go back?
LotR, almost sad at the end, even though what they went through was pain at the time
6th sense
a good story keeps you guessing until end
even hairloss God counts
do not fear, fear, do not fear
what does this mean?
“homologaesei” say the same as, same word
Commentators:
Erasmo
“solemnly…prohibition against fear except God”
why:
triumph in the end
part of plan secret will soon not be secret
“covered” same word used for bridal covering and funeral one
beauty of woman to be revealed
ugly of corpse
Proclaim intimacy of prayer in secret that tells u not to be afraid
“whoever declares himself to be in me” I will declare him to be in me before the father [Chrysostom says similar]
Dont look for God to acknowledge you on earth but in heaven
Chrysostom
silent be shouted: therefore preaching unreserved! [Jerome too]
no fear BECAUSE of providence
Jerome:
if things made to perish only do so by God’s will how much less you to worry who are made imperishable
Hilary
hairs: no accident can befal even our bodies
