Weeks theme: creation.
Every lesson we will use a key word to think about a different aspect of God’s act of creating.
Today’s key word: FAITH
Hebrews 11:3 (ESV)
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
What do we mean when we use the word faith?
What is faith?
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
What is assurance?
Being sure of something.
Faith is being sure of what we hope for.
What is hope?
Biblical hope is different than the way we normally use the word hope.
Biblical hope is a confident expectation.
Example: I hope I win the lottery.
What am I saying? What are the odds of actually winning the lottery? 1 in 292.2 million. So when we say, “I hope I win the lottery” we mean there is no way I am actually going to win, but I hope or I wish so.
That is not biblical hope. Biblical hope is a confident expectation.
Example: My hope is that I have eternal life because of my relationship with Jesus Christ. I am confident in that truth and I am fully expecting that it will happen.
Faith is being sure that what we hope for will happen.
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
What is a conviction?
Being convinced that something is true.
Illustration: We flew here from the USA. Flying is one of the safest form of travel. When I get on the plane and it takes off I am convinced that it will make it safely to my destination.
Conviction of what? Things not seen.
Illustration: Trust exercise
What did the person hope for? That he would not fall to the ground.
Did he have assurance of that hope?
What was the person’s conviction?
Ultimately what did the person have to put their faith in? My words.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
God tells us in his word that He created the universe. It takes faith to believe that. Why? No one was present to see the beginning of the universe (not even the scientists that say the universe was created by a big bang- it takes just as much faith to trust the words of a human scientist as it does to trust the words of God).
Human scientist says- the universe was an accident, big-bang.
God says- the universe was created by the word of God.
So that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. What does that mean?
Everything, all of creation was made, out of things that are not visible.
One of life’s big questions- where did matter come from? Where did the stuff that caused the supposed big bang come from?
Or how did we get from non-matter to matter?
God tells us in his word- what is seen (matter) was not made out of things that are visible.
So how did we go from non-matter to matter? Where did the stuff of the universe come from?
The Bible tells us that the universe was created by the word of God. God spoken everything into existence out of nothing. God spoke and it came to be.
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”
9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,
15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.
20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”
24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Where did the universe and everything in it come from?
Man’s word says- the universe was an accident, big-bang.
God says- the universe was created by the word of God.
How do we know?
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Ultimately, it is something you must understand by faith.
Not blind faith- God has left us a reliable record of the creation of the universe in His Word.
Who’s word are you going to trust? I invite you to put your faith in God’s Words not man’s words.
