BURDEN BEARERPsalm 55:22“Cast thy burden upon the LORD and he shall sustain thee, he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).What do I do when troubles/burdens overwhelm me? The world offers many solutions, and when you cross the palm of the world with money you will discover the world can fleece you but not help you.FIRST—THE PRECEPT ABOUT BURDENS“Cast thy burden upon the LORD.” This command informs us of two important facts.• The commonness of troubles. “Burden.” A wealthy and godly king wrote this exhortation which says troubles comes to everyone. If the godly king knew about burdens then everyone will know about burdens. Youth are not exempted and age seems only to add more burdens. Neither does godliness stop troubles from coming though the godly will escape many troubles of the ungodly. Poverty has its burdens but so does wealth which may surprise the poor. Most people are hurting, or will soon be hurting, for troubles are common to all.• The solution for troubles “The LORD.” When trial comes, we are often perplexed as to what to do. The answer is in our text. “Cast thy burden upon the LORD.” The Lord is the great problem solver. Men often try drugs, booze, shrinks (which includes so-called Christian psychological counsellors) and a host of other solutions to no avail. When troubles come, don’t get on the phone and tell your friends, rather tell the Lord. The songwriter knew the answer when he penned “Are you weary, are you heavy-hearted, tell it to Jesus.”SECOND—THE PROMISES ABOUT BURDENS“He shall sustain thee … He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.” God gives us a great promise to encourage us to cast our burdens on the Lord. The promise has four parts to it.• The provisions in the promise. “He will sustain thee,” The word translated “sustain” means to maintain something, to provide for something. When we cast our burdens on the Lord, He takes care of us. And no one takes better care of people than the Lord.• The purity in the promise. “Moved.” The word translated “moved” means to slip or fall. When troubles come we often sin by doubting God’s care for us and speaking disparagingly of God. Taking our burdens to the Lord will not corrupt us like taking your burdens to booze, drugs and other unsavory so-called remedies.• The period in the promise. “He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.” God’s promise is forever. The world’s solutions (such as drugs, booze, and shrinks) are temporary at best and often add to our troubles (especially financially). God’s solutions do not add to our troubles and His solutions are lasting.• The people in the promise. “The righteous.” The promise is not for everyone. It is only for the “righteous.” Walk in sin and you lose the promise, but the godly have this precious promise.
