Humility
a virtue that has been overshadowed and neglected in our modern society: humility. In a world fixated on self-promotion and personal achievement, humility stands as a radical counter-cultural quality, deeply rooted in the essence of Christ's
Look at verse 5
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
that word mind here
means to set one's mind or heart upon something
the idea is not to give just a casual thought to something
but an intentional kind of thinking.
so as this
verse is the bridge from last weeks section about
us having unity through humility
and todays section of Christ’s humility
this verse is an exhortation
for us to have the same mindset of Christ
that will be described in the next few verses.
and its something for us to
think with care, and intention
God is wanting us to focus here
because what is about to be said is important.
CHRIST’S HUMILITY (v.6-8)
CHRIST’S HUMILITY (v.6-8)
if a janitor cleans a toilet thats expected
if the owner of a wealthy successful company
cleans the company toilets that shows humility
not saying the janitor isnt humble
but it would take great humility for
the successful owner to clean the company toilets.
it helps to know who the person is
to understand the depth of their humility.
well verse 6 tells us a bit of who Jesus
then verses 7-8 shows us what Jesus did,
which will show us great humility
lets look at verse 6 to see who Jesus is:
6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
So ..... He is the form of God
that greek word is morphe’ and is where
we get the word morph from
This clearly shows us His deity
He is equal to God:
What does it mean that He did not consider it robbery to be equal to God?
Christ did not see equality with God as something to be selfishly grasped
or exploited for personal gain.
In other words, Jesus,
being fully divine,
did not cling to His divine privileges or use them for His own advantage.
lets look at verse 7-8 to see His humility
7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
There is 8 aspects of His humility
that show us His mindset
Didn't consider it robbery to be equal to God
Made Himself of no reputation
Took the form of a bondservant
Came in the likeness of men
Found in appearance as a man
Humbled Himself
Obedient to the point of death
Death of the cross.
Didn't consider it robbery to be equal to God
Made Himself of no reputation
Took the form of a bondservant
Here we get one of the most profound descriptions of our Lord
in the entire word of God.
its the same greek word
for Jesus being in the form of God
and Jesus taking the form of a bondservant
What God becomes the slave?
Came in the likeness of men
Found in appearance as a man
Humbled Himself
Obedient to the point of death
Death of the cross.
CHRIST’S EXALTATION (v.9-11)
CHRIST’S EXALTATION (v.9-11)
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Christ’s exaltation:
God highly exalted Him
Given a name above every name
Every knee will bow at name of Jesus
Every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord
Everyone every atheist, every prideful man, every cult and religious leader
What a day!
As worship team comes forward
Now lets not forget the exhortation of this passage:
let this mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus
he was humble, be obedient, dont overvalue self, and serve!
Jesus in all His greatness
did not exalt Himself
He served, and He obeyed.
Now He is highly exalted
evvery knee will bow to Him
every tonuge will confess He is Lord
I want to be on His side
May we follow Him!
and share His mind
Lets follow Him
To not exalt self
to be humble
to serve and to obey
Were going to be humble and not exalt self by loving God and others
Doing this is obedience because He has commanded that
and doing this is serving God and others.
