Recap
The crossing of the red sea is pointing us to the cross
It shows us that God is a God of deliverance and that He saves His people here through the crossing of the sea and saves His people now through the power of the cross
Exodus 14:10–15 (NIV)
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” 13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” 15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.
What are the commands given to the Israelites?
Do not be afraid
Stand firm and you will see
Be Still
Move Forward
When fear is present, what are we focusing on?
How do we control our emotions?
What are we focusing on when we stand firm?
Our natural tendency when a problem arises is to fix it! To take control and fix the problem. That’s typically our first instinct
But Exodus 14 teaches us that our first instinct should be to be still
What does it mean to be still in the Lord?
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
In one sense, God has created us to rule and have dominion
In other instances He asks us to be still
When is it an appropriate exercise of God-given dominion?
When is it sinful?
How do we know when to be still or move forward?
14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
20 We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.
7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.
15 Lord, I wait for you; you will answer, Lord my God.
7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.
