Bad Drivers?

Is it a sin to get angry? I mean these are trivial, but some of us, have something deeper driving it.
Ephesians 4:25–27 ESV
Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
might make you feel better to know - Jesus got angry. - Most people think Temple - but 5 times that Jesus got Angry, but he never sinned.
However, we are humans, If you’re like me, anger has lead to sin. We are called to a different type of anger.
Title: A different Anger, for a Different Agenda
My Hope: Through Jesus we will learn when it is right to be Angry. What we do with it, and how we can control our Anger
**Prayer**
Sermon Series: Built Different
1 Peter 1:15 ESV
but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
week 1: priorities, 2: diff antidote for anxiety. 3: diff perspective in persecution
One area that changes for us when become Christ Followers - Our Anger.
One area that changes for us when become Christ Followers - Our Anger.
What is Anger? An emotional characteristic caused by tension and hostility, arising from frustration - due to a real or imagined injury by another, or perceived injustice.
Anger = secondary emotion, not primary - Anger = outward expression from an internal wound or feeling. It’s not a Sin to be angry.
Let’s look at when Jesus got angry
First thing to notice about Jesus -
Not characterised by His Anger - Got Angry, wasn’t often - You don’t know Jesus as the “Table Flipper”
He was charactarised by Love, not Anger.
Jesus also got angry for very different reasons to what we get angry for. A different Anger/diff agenda.
Today; 2 stories of Jesus getting angry - 3 things to do to deal with you anger - and then visit why you might not be able to let go.
[context] Passover - Tourist Season | 250,000 people there | Triumphal Entry - last week of life - Jesus riding up - He turns into temple - and what does he see? Hipocrasy, greed, abuse and misuse of fathers house - broke his heart.
Matthew 21:12–13 ESV
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
Some of you, using verse to flip too many tables.
What I want you to understand about temple *Show Picture* *Gentile Court* - Because everyone had a right to pray to God.
During this time - No foreign Money, hence money changes, people would buy sacrificies. So temple courts was filled as market place -
We read this and think, Jesus got angry cause they where doing wrong thing, made it market place -
This is true, but Jesus wasn’t offended for himself - deeper Reason Jesus got Angry here;
let’s read-
Matthew 21:14 ESV
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.
Jesus wasn’t angry about what happened to Him - Jesus was angry on behalf of those who were mistreated.
Jesus wasn’t offended | His heart was breaking for mis-treatement of others |
Do you think Jesus was ever betrayed? Criticised? Anyone ever hating on Jesus? Of course - ever treated unjustly? Yes - Never got angry at it.
Jesus got angry when others were hurting - A different type of Anger/ diff agenda.
His life, they can take it, Reputation, he didn’t care - Stand in the way of getting close to Him- Peaked his attention.
In their persuit for material gain, they had forgotton the marganilised.
Big Question; What are you pursuing? What are you forgetting?
Road Rage
Persuing Justice, Forgetting person not saved? Pursuing reputation, forgetting you’re different. Persuing identity? Forgetting it comes from God.
Let me be clear - Not telling you to forgo boundaries | Encouraging you that your pursuit should be Christ and His Kingdom, and you need to remember what He did on the cross.
If you find yourself angry, there may be something deeper driving it.
Every time you see Jesus get angry - You’ll see him help or heal someone - let’s see the 2nd time.
Mark 3:1–2 ESV
Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.
Jesus said to man, come here,
Mark 3:5 ESV
And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.
The pharisees where there, just to catch him out.
In their persuit of religion, they forgot the heart of God
Jesus wasn’t offended | rightously angry, at the mistreatment of this man.
Let’s do an anger Audit - Really easy to see if someone else needs message. But where are you carrying grudge? being extra Critical? When someone hurts you, gossips , mis-treat you? It’s natural to get angry.
When someone wrongs us, not called for revenge, called to bless and forgive them - We are called to be different.
Just because you feel strongly about something, doesn’t mean you’re right.
**Story** - Pandemic - So many people Angry.
So many people, in their persuit to be right - have forgotton to be loving.
1 Timothy 2:8 ESV
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;
We have to ask ourselves, why are we angry? Are we offended? Is it pride that has been attacked? Has my ego taken a beating?
Are we rightously angry?
How can we be rightously Angry?
Don’t take it personally, and be angry on the right of others.
When Jesus Got Angry, he loved and healed those who where hurting.
Who was it? That couldn’t get in? The sick, poor, lame, blind - didn’t have resources - The Jews where preventing them from getting close to God.
What are you persuing? What are you forgetting? - is it leading to rightous anger?
So what do we do? If we want to be rightously Angry, and get rid of our Flesh anger? What do we do?
3 ways + 3 Prayers;
Discover
Discover; Why am I angry? - is what I’m persuing rightous?
James 4:1–2 ESV
What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.
What’s the root? Were you hurt? What is it that you want?
Prayer; “Holy Spirit, help me to see”
2. Disclose
You gotta talk about it - Sin grows best in dark - so put a light on it - We need to talk about it.
Colossians 3:8 ESV
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
We gotta put it away - Matthew gives us very clear picture of how to deal with disputes - God wants reconciliation - He loves it - Let god Heal - It’s so good to bring it to light, but only God can actually help heal.
Prayer; “Holy Spirit, Heal me from my seed”
3. Deny
You deny your felsh
Proverbs 29:11 ESV
A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.
You may have a reason to be angry, but as a Christian, you do not have a right to Sin.
The moment you became a follower of Christ, right got taken away. “It’s just the way I am” - Nope, you’re made new.
Not all anger is explosive is it? Silent treatment, turning your back, taking away the warm toes in bed - Sidebarring people, no coffee in the morning.
Galatians 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Be angry - but do not sin - A different type of Anger/diff agenda.
Prayer; “Holy Spirit, Have your way with me”.
3 Prayers
“Holy Spirit, help me to see” | “Holy Spirit, heal me from my seed” | “Holy Spirit, Have your way with me”.
Want to find out what you’re persuing? You gotta do some work | It takes Humility - It takes you to drop pride, and drop your ego - and grab onto Jesus. like man with withered hand.
**illustration about carrying something, gotta let it go, Jesus is asking you to reach out your hand, can’t do that if you’re carrying all this stuff- He might break it.**
James 1:19–20 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Outward expression of an internal wound. Now I don’t know what wound - might be guy cut you off - might be deeper - gotta do some work -
You might say “look” and I want to tell you to “look” - Look at the one who took on the Sin of world - that while we where in rebellion against him he sent his Son.
God had every right to be angry, cancel us, but I am thankful for a God what didn’t cancel me. I am thankful for a God that cancelled Sin, and didn’t cancel me but sent love.
Colossians 2:13–14 ESV
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Close

I am not minimising the hurt you might feel, but God wants to provide you freedom from it |
Psalm 55:22 ESV
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Our goal is not to be angry - It’s to be loving but We are going to be angry, but let’s be angry like Jesus.
A very divided world, needs a united church. I hope that we can be united. Battle is not against flesh and blood, it’s against powers and principlaities of Darkness - So when we get angry - Let’s start with our spiritual enemy. Satan, who wants to steal kill and destroy.
May we be unified - May we be rightously angry but let’s be united in leading people to become fully devoted followers of Chirst.
Jesus didn’t get offended, He got angry when something that was happening prevented people getting close to him.
And if you have a china plate, what ever you’re holding onto - I know it’s hard, ask the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, Help me to see
Holy Spirit, Heal me from my seed
Holy Spirit, Have your way with me.
